Students recited their favorite quote from books they read while at school at the June 7 ceremony, and Principal Ruben Peña handed out diplomas to all of the graduates. Likening it to the Jodie Harrison program for basket- ball, Earley said she loves the sense of community she and her daughters get from the league. “It’s a great thing for this community,” she said. Annie Earley played two seasons in the Little League’s baseball program before joining the softball league last year. She agrees with her mother that the league is a great addition. “It’s more fun playing with all girls,” Annie said. The league’s primary pur- pose is to introduce young players to the game. And that means every part of the game. Earley said players rotate positions every two innings, which gives every girl a chance to find her strengths and work on her weaknesses. “It’s truly a teaching league, where the kids are really Softball league co-founder Steve Contreras has developed a program that teaches the skills of the game while allowing learning,” Earley said. players to have fun. Guess they haven’t been to Hinsdale.”

It was Mustangs vs. Angels Saturday morning at Norfolk Field in Clarendon Hills. The Clarendon Hills girls’ softball league was started in 2017 with teams made up of girls from District 181’s attendance area. The Mustangs and Angels roster includes girls in second and third grades, with many players hailing from Hinsdale. Angels player Savannah Ulrich took a turn as catcher during the game. And while the girls play with a machine as pitcher, Sienna Pequet of the Mustangs was on the ‘mound’ playing the position when she scooped up a ground ball to force a runner out at home plate. The Angels went on to victory and are headed for playoffs this weekend. (Jim Slonoff photos)
