18 March 2020 Sunshine Coast drivers name, shame most congested roads As local and State government elections loomed, RACQ has called on present and future leaders to commit to fixing the most congested roads and bottlenecks named and shamed by Sunshine Coast motorists. Drivers pinpointed more than 500 roads which caused unnecessary traffic delays across the Sunshine State in the Club’s annual Red Spot Congestion Survey. Club spokesperson Paul Turner said the Bruce Highway, Caloundra Road and Sunshine Motorway were the most troublesome locations identified by Sunshine Coast locals. “We asked Queensland drivers to name and shame the most congested locations as they’re in the best position to help us pinpoint the worst roads,” Mr Turner said. “Across the Sunshine Coast there were 335 nominations in total and one of the most common complaints was congestion on the Bruce Highway between Pine Rivers and Caloundra. “Delays on Caloundra Road at the Nicklin Way and Kawana Way roundabouts, as well as congestion at interchanges and single lane sections of the Sunshine Motorway were also a key source of frustration for drivers, with all three appearing in the Top 10 most nominated. “The results really do quantify the problems we often hear about and demonstrate the need for continuous improvement.” Mr Turner said the Club would use the results from the survey to lobby governments for funding and improvements, and get commitments before Queenslanders headed to the polls. “More than 2700 nominations came in from across Queensland, so it’s clear congestion is an issue that really grinds our gears. The M1 is the highest-trafficked road in Queensland and is an enabling link for long distance traffic (freight, tourism, commercial and commuter) between economic hubs on the east coast of Queensland and New South Wales. The lack of capacity on the road network between Brisbane and the Gold Coast was highlighted as a problem in the Infrastructure Australia Audit. The 2015 Audit identified the M3/M1 Pacific Motorway in the top ten road corridors with the highest projected delay cost by 2031 nationally, and the section from Beenleigh to Helensvale as the third largest projected delay cost in the corridor in Queensland in 2031. The 2019 Audit projected the cost of congestion for the Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast area to increase to over $9 billion by 2031. The Brisbane to Gold Coast corridor has been, and will continue to be, one of the fastest growing areas in Australia. The cities of Logan and Gold Coast will continue to experience high rates of residential growth, while the city of Brisbane will have the highest growth in employment in Queensland – thereby being an important source of employment for commuting residents in Logan and on the Gold Coast.
