The genus imstigoteuthis contains two subgenera, Mastigoteuthis s. str. and Ebhinoteuthis. The genus ldioteuthis is here resurected, and it is divisible into two sub- genera, ldioteuthis s. str. and Mbgnoteuthis nov. The family Mastigoteuthidae was first established by Verrill (1881) and subsequently Chun (1910) placed it as a subfamily of the Chiroteuthidae including eight species. Roper et al. (1969) raised it again to the family by incorporating with the genus Ebhinoteuthis Joubin, 1993, which was based on three paralarvae of questionable taxenomical position. Nesis (1977) attempted a preliminary revision of the Mastigoteuthis and prepared a key to the species. In a recent work, he (l987) proposed two subgenera for this genus, namely, Mtzstigoteuthis s. str. and Mastigopsis Grimpe, 1922, but none for the genus Echinoteuthis that contained two species. Besides Mastigoteuthis s. str. and Mastigopsis he (1977, 1987) recognized the grimaldii-species group based on the structure and position of tentacular suckers. During an extensive and critical examination of the morphology of the 310 specimens collected from the Northwest Pacific, it became clear that the family Mastigoteuthidae is reasonably divisible into two genera, each contains two subgenera.

This large marine ecosystem presents 139 cephalopod species, including high commercial value groups (Ommastrephids, Loliginids, Octopods and Sepiids), corresponding to a transitional zone between different Atlantic zoogeographic provinces where tropical, temperate and cold water cephalopod species mix.

Cephalopods are an important, abundant and taxonomically diverse component of the bathypelagic realm. However, their biology, ecology and distribution are poorly known. Specimens of Mastigoteuthis agassizii (Mastigoteuthidae) have been captured in the southern part of the Denmark Strait, which is at approximately 65°N. This site is approximately 550 km north of the previously most northern known border of the Mastigoteuthidae range. The main goal of this paper is to provide an extended morphological description and biological analysis of M. agassizii, the first species of the Mastigoteuthidae caught in the Subarctic Atlantic. Despite sample collection at 534 deep- water stations in the area, only two specimens were captured, indicating the rarity of this species in the northern part of its range. We suggest that the typical range of this species is bathyal depths throughout the North Atlantic to the Subarctic, but not through the Denmark and Davis Straits to the Arctic. These findings coincide with the geographic border of the Northern Atlantic boreal bathyal province, which is warmer and more saline compared to the Arctic province further to the north.

Chen, Advisor Junfeng Shang Craig Zirbel ii ABSTRACT John T. Chen, Advisor In this thesis, statistical methods are used to analyze the generation of species-level phylogenies. Two software packages, one phylogenetic and one statistical, are used to investigate the difference in phylogeny topology across three methods. Maximum likelihood estimation, neighbor-joining, and UPGMA methodologies are applied in this comparison to study the accuracy of each software package in correctly placing taxa with the true phylogeny. Four genes are used to compare with variable length sequences and genes amongst forty-seven squid species. In addition, missing data techniques are employed to assess the impact missing data has on phylogeny generation. Two software platforms were used to generate phylogenies for genes 16S rRNA, 18s rRNA, 28S rRNA, and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI). The phylogenetic software platform MEGA was utilized as well as the statistical software platform, R; within R, the packages ape, phangorn, and seqinr were used in tree generation. Results show discrepancies between phylogenies generated across the four single-gene trees and multiple-gene trees; only phylogenies generated using missing data in the form of partial sequences grouped all families correctly. Results from this study highlight the struggle in determining the best software package to use for phylogenetic analyses. It was discovered that in general, MEGA generated a more accurate single-gene phylogeny from gene 18S rRNA while R generated a more accurate single-gene phylogeny from gene 28S rRNA.
