Well that long unbeaten run came to an end a fortnight ago with the defeat against First Team – TBA Cricklade. For me it always looked a tough one as Graham Jackson always seems to be capable of motivating his side for the game against Wootton Bassett. If he First Team Tracksuits & T-shirts- C.S. Chairmans Chat – Sat 27th February

Good afternoon, welcome to you all and to our visitors Clanfield 85.

I have previously referenced in this column the clubs football development plan, and how it maps out our objectives for growth and continuation of the club. The plan was initially required as evidence to the County FA of our plans, and to receive their support in achieving charter standard accreditation. I am pleased to say though that unlike many such plans, it has not simply sat static in a draw, but rather we have continued to review and update it on a quarterly basis, in no small part thanks to the diligence of Andy Walduck. Keeping the plan alive in this way is important in that it provides the club roadmap helping to ensure we are all working for the same agreed goals. The plan is also though absolutely vital in our relationship with the County FA, and a strong football development plan is critical for success in gaining support from the FA and Football Foundation for grant assistance, which we know we will be seeking come the relocation. What the plan provides the FA is evidence of the football benefits that will result from financially investing in developing clubs facilities. Tedious and boring it can seem to be, but our football development plan is a major factor in the clubs continued success.

An objective for this season was to bring the previous “Community Soccer” initiative under the WBTFC umbrella, and I am pleased to say this has been achieved with the launch at the beginning of the season on WBTFC Community Football, led by Matt Laurence. The numbers attending the weekly sessions have been steadily increasing, and the holiday clubs have also proved to be well attended. In addition our club/school links have begun this year, and Matt now provides coaching into three of our local primary schools as well as youth girls within the secondary school. The structure is now there for continued growth, and it seems the community appetite is responding. Thanks go to Matt and Pete Yeardley for driving this all so effectively.

Right, enough of that boring admin and planning stuff, and back to the game. With no disrespect to our visitors, lets hope for a quick return to our winning ways.

Cheers – FROM THE DUGOUT

Firstly I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Clanfield 85 to Rylands Way. We hope you enjoy your short stay with us and will all join us in the bar after the game.

After a terrific run of games it was really disappointing to lose our long unbeaten record at home and in a local derby. That said I have nothing but praise for all the players that have been involved in that incredible run. You have been magnificent since our last defeat way back in September

The key now is to get back on some kind of run and not let all that good work go to waste. I have complete faith in the squad we have put together this season and I fully expect us to be competitive right till the end of the season.

Our defeat against Cricklade was very disappointing but more disappointing was the behaviour of one or two of their players who made a bee line for our dugout after the final whistle. I made my feelings in the local paper (no names).

The article must have hit a nerve because on the Monday I received a phone call from one of the player’s involved. We had a good chat and he apologised for his actions. That really pleased me as this is someone who I had a lot of respect for and still have.

We only have nine games left now and where we end up is in our own hands, and at the start of the season that is exactly what you would have wanted. Each game now is going to be a cup final and we need you all to get behind us in the run in.

If all goes to plan we could have a new player on board for the weekend. We have a great little squad but as you all know I have been trying to add a proven goal scorer to our ranks for the run in.

The two sides shared defence failed to deal with Jason Court’s set piece. six goals and the points, on target for Wootton Bassett were Sammy Rose, Derek Powell and Ian Sinfield who scored with a header from a Dave Clark cross. The long break had Bassett struggled to hold onto possession as their tendency to overplay and go for the deft little certainly knocked Wootton Bassett out of their stride as the next two games away against flicks meant they never had the ball long enough to open up the Clanfield defence. Despite completing the home fixtures there were still a number of away games to fit despite playing just less than 45 minutes. He linked up well with the midfield, scored the two in to conclude the season. A heavy midweek defeat at Vickers followed the Bromham result, crucial goals and his overall work rate caused trouble for the Clanfield defence. Brian Ewen scoring the only goal in a 5-1 defeat against one of the struggling sides. Three days later Wootton Bassett did pick up two points from the visit to long time rivals Swindon Scoop Rating: 6/10 – Bassett never really got going in the first half and their tendency to Victoria, always a pleasing place to return with two points, Dave Challis and Derek Powell overplay created problems. However, great goalkeeping from James Domm and a solid offside scoring the goals in a 2-1 win. An identical score followed in the next game away to trap ensured a clean sheet allowing Shaw’s goal to be all that was required from the front men. Westbury and the good run continued with a handsome 5-0 win at Trowbridge Town

Bassett crush Clanfield to go joint top

Radcot Road, 17th February 2010

Wootton Bassett Town made it a three-way tie atop Hellenic League Division One West with an emphatic 3-0 away victory against Clanfield. All three goals came in the first half, and once again it was Sam Collier who led the 1902/03 Wiltshire Senior Cup Runners-up way, as Bassett’s jack-of-all-trades scored a brace to move into double figures and 1902/03 Advertiser Cup Runners-up put him at the head of the scoring charts. 1903/04 Wiltshire Senior Cup Runners-up Both his strikes came after Jon Holloway had given the visitors the lead early on 1905/06 Wiltshire County League Runners-up from the penalty spot. Manager Dave Turner would probably have bitten the proverbial hand off had he 1930/31 Calne & District League Runners-up been offered six points from the three away trips in a row that his team have now 1931/32 Calne & District League Champions completed. But with maximum points taken, Bassett now take a huge amount of momentum into Calne & District League Cup Winners a run of five straight home games that begins with the visit of Cricklade Town, who 1935/36 Calne & District League Champions were the last team to inflict defeat upon the side in the league, a span of 16 games. Calne & District League Cup Runners-up Pressure has also been put on the three teams seemingly left in the fight for 1938/39 Brotherhood Cup Winners promotion. Cheltenham Saracens have now been leapfrogged, and with two further games in hand, Turner’s side can really up the ante. WBTFC Newsletter Volume 6, January 2010 WBTFC.CO.UK

Welcome: Well, with such a prolonged cold snap, preceded by wet pitches, it seems like some time since our teams were out there on the park. And indeed it may well be a few weeks yet before games re-commence in anger. This of course leads to fixture congestion, and spare a thought for the league fixture secretary’s who must really be up against it. Of course, it’s happened before, and will no doubt do so again, but it is likely to mean a very busy March and April. However, despite that, your club continues to operate, and I’m delighted to introduce this latest edition of our in house newsletter. We’ve hopefully covered all areas of club activity, but please do contact if you have any questions regarding club operations. We are though concerned that Touchline does not get distributed to all our members, and the current weather will not help in that, so please do pass copies on should you be aware of that problem and feedback to us so we can ensure better distribution next time. Paul H - Chairman
