ABSTRACT The Annunciations to Maryam in the Qur’ān: Jewish-Christian Subtexts, Milieu, and Typology Kendra Fiddler Master of Arts with major in Abrahamic Studies, Dallas International University, April 2021 Supervising Professor: Mark Harlan The annunciation narratives to Maryam in the Qur’ān about the birth of ‘Isā show profound familiarity with the Jewish and Christian texts, traditions, and debates of Late Antiquity. This paper analyzes the literary artistry, intertextualities, subtexts, and typologies of Q3 (al-‘Imran) and Q19 (Maryam). Jewish-Christian and intra-Christian conflict over Mary’s virtue and status, as well as Jesus’ birth, shed light on several qur’ānic passages about the two. For Judaism and Christianity leading up to the seventh century, Mariology depends on Christology; the Qur’ān’s treatment is likely the same. In light of the Qur’ān’s awareness of Jewish-Christian Christological and Mariological conflicts, traditional Islamic understandings of the nature and work of ‘Isā are challenged: Q5:116 may be refuting a Christian tritheism in popular piety that was not official doctrine; Q5:75 and ‘Isā’s birth narratives may be anti-Docetist; Q4:157 may repudiate Talmudic claims about why and how Jesus died, not that he died. Abdel Haleem SOAS UNIVERSITY OF LONDON Introduction Mary is a very important figure in the Qur’an. Her name occurs 34 times, and most of these citations are connected to Jesus, who is normally referred to as ʿIsā bin Maryam (‘Jesus, son of Mary’). This description points out immediately that Jesus had no father and indicates that, in the Qur’an, he is not ‘son of God’ but is son of Mary. In the light of this, the distinction given to Mary (the only woman to be mentioned by name in the Qur’an) of having a sura named after her is not surprising. When, in Q. 3:42, the angel speaks to her, saying ‘Mary, God has chosen you and purified you. He has chosen you above all other women’, three actions are mentioned: Mary is ‘chosen’, ‘purified’, and ‘chosen above all women’. The first two are shared by others in the Qur’an,1 while the third is unique to Mary. We may understand this as heralding the unique status of her having conceived when no man has touched [her] (Q. 19:20), and of being the mother of Jesus. This article examines the complex relations between a violent non-state actor, the Al Qaeda network, and order in the international system. Al Qaeda poses a challenge to the sovereignty of specific states but it also challenges the international society as a whole. This way, the challenge that Al Qaeda represents is putting the survival of the system under risk. Consequently it requires that the international society will collectively respond to meet the threat. But challenges to both the practical sovereignty of states and to the international society do not have to weaken the system. Instead, such challenges if handled effectively may lead to the strengthening of the society of states: a robust international society is dynamic and responsive to threats. Its members could cooperate to adapt the principles and the institutions on which the system is founded to new circumstances. Through its focus on the preservation qualities of the international society this article also reinforces the significance of the English School to the study of international relations. It raises important questions that could be answered in the framework of the English School. Introduction The events of 11 September 2001 resurrected interest in terrorism. While scholarly interest in terrorism existed before 11 September, the magnitude, sophistication and ruthlessness of the attacks generated new questions regarding the role of terrorism in the international state-centric order. This article will explore one such issue,1 the relation between religious terror groups and order in today’s society of states.

This paper focuses on three recensions of the story available to us in printed editions of al-Kisāʾī’s Qiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʾ in similar vein, through intertextual comparison of these accounts with Mary stories as told in the Qur’an, premodern qiṣaṣ collections, and Islamic historiographical sources. By comparing al-Kisāʾī’s accounts of the Annunciation with those told in the Qur’an and the wider Islamic Mary corpus it is possible to gain insight into the author’s literary agenda, and also into the ways in which he draws on the wider narrative pool for his material, makes reference to the Qur’an, and manipulates theme and characterisation.
