Abstract The thesis is concerned with the organisational and ideological development of the Monday Club and its contribution to the Conservative Governments, the Conservative Party and the modern British Right, from the Club's inception in 1961 to the fall of Margaret Thatcher in 1990. The significance of this investigation lies in the fact that whilst the Monday Club is much referred to, with the exception of one article, it has not been seriously studied. Yet, it has been regarded as one of the most well known groups within the Conservative Party and it was important enough for a number of Conservative MPs, including members of the Cabinet, to have become members. The Monday Club is most frequently associated with controversial views on decolonisation and immigration, and these are explored in some detail. However, it adopted a comprehensive policy framework which the thesis addresses by looking at a range of policy areas. The thesis shows that the Club activity was intended to influence the Conservative Party and the British Right. However, while it has been claimed that the Club has influenced the Conservative Party or Conservative Government policy, the thesis argues that where Conservative policy has accorded with that of the Club, this was crucially where it shared ground with other groups on the New Right. The study has also considered the novelty of the Club's conservatism. It espoused a particular kind of conservatism, which is best classified as radical right, a development 11 that left it outside the main forces driving Conservatism and Britain to the right in the closing decades of the twentieth century. The thesis has particularly drawn on Monday Club publications, a number of interviews and access to a hitherto unused archive, the Sir Patrick Wall collection of papers, held at Hull University. 111 The Development of the Monday Club and its Contribution to the Conservative Party and the Modern British Right, 1961 to 1990. The significance of this investigation lies in the fact that whilst the Monday Club has received much media attention over the years, how important it has been in Conservative politics remains to be established. The Monday Club is frequently ignored or only referred to in passing in scholarly studies of the Conservative Party and the modern British Right and those accounts that do discuss it tend to concentrate on its policy regarding race and immigration, and fail to explore the development of the organisation and its policy or evaluate its contribution to modern British Conservatism. The originality of this study is to offer a detailed analysis of the Monday Club, appraising its influence, if any on the Conservative Party and the modern British Right. The Monday Club is worthy of study as it is "The best known of Conservative unofficial groups". Furthermore, the fact that a number of MPs joined the Club, some of whom were ministers and members of the Cabinet and Shadow Cabinets, would suggest that it should be seen to be important. It was active nationally and it was particularly active at 1. After its formative years it intended to develop a framework that would challenge the Conservative Party leadership's adhesion to post war consensus politics. 2 Even if it failed to achieve this aim, this does not detract from the fact that it is worthy of study. As Roger Eatwell has argued with reference to the British National Party (BNP), the BNP failed to influence or make an impact on British politics, but nonetheless, it remains important to examine reasons why it failed in order to put the British experience in context in a broader study of extremism.3 In evaluating earlier work on the Club, the central contribution has been an article published in 1972 by Patrick Seyd. His article is the only commentary on the Club that raises key issues other than race and immigration, as he examines the Club's early organisational and ideological development. The purpose of Seyd's article is to investigate how the Monday Club fulfils the role of a faction within the Conservative Party. Seyd argues that the Monday Club is worthy of study because it breaks with the ideas of intra-party debate, that is to say, it is "a party within the party". 4 Despite Seyd's 2. Furthermore, Seyd's article, while showing the distinctiveness of the Club in terms of its factionalism, does not highlight enough its novelty in that it espoused a particular strand of conservatism which combined a right wing approach on race and immigration, empire and anti- communism, with neo-liberalism on economics.

    British Conservative Women MPs and ‘Women’s Issues’ 1950-1979 Katie Haessly, BA MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2010 1 Abstract In the period 1950-1979, there were significant changes in legislation relating to women’s issues, specifically employment, marital and guardianship and abortion rights. This thesis explores the impact of Conservative female MPs on these changes as well as the changing roles of women within the party. In addition there is a discussion of the relationships between Conservative women and their colleagues which provides insights into the changes in gender roles which were occurring at this time. Following the introduction the next four chapters focus on the women themselves and the changes in the above mentioned women’s issues during the mid-twentieth century and the impact Conservative women MPs had on them. The changing Conservative attitudes are considered in the context of the wider changes in women’s roles in society in the period. Chapter six explores the relationship between women and men of the Conservative Parliamentary Party, as well as men’s impact on the selected women’s issues. These relationships were crucial to enhancing women’s roles within the party, as it is widely recognised that women would not have been able to attain high positions or affect the issues as they did without help from male colleagues. Finally, the female Labour MPs in the alteration of women’s issues is discussed in Chapter seven. Labour women’s relationships both with their party and with Conservative women are also examined.

This is an atypical issue consisting of just one essay and various appendices which has been researched, written, typed, printed etc by the two of us in less than four months. Its shortcomings should be seen in that light. Brutally summarised, our thesis is this. Mrs Thatcher (and 'Thatcherism') grew out of a right-wing network in this country with extensive links to the military-intelligence establishment. Her rise to power was the climax of a long campaign by this network which included a protracted destabilisation campaign against the Liberal and Labour Parties - chiefly the Labour Party - during 1974-6. We are not offering a conspiracy theory about the rise of Mrs Thatcher, but we do think that the outlines of a concerted campaign to discredit the other parties, to engineer a right-wing leader of the Tory Party, and then a right-wing government, is visible.

Thorpe After Andrew Bonar Law's funeral in Westminster Abbey in November 1923, Herbert Asquith observed, 'It is fitting that we should have buried the Unknown Prime Minister by the side of the Unknown Soldier'. Asquith owed Bonar Law no posthumous favours, and intended no ironic compliment, but the remark was a serious under-estimate. In post-war politics Alec Douglas-Home is often seen as the Bonar Law of his times, bracketed with his fellow Scot as an interim figure in the history of Downing Street between longer serving Premiers; in Bonar Law's case, Lloyd George and Stanley Baldwin, in Home's, Harold Macmillan and Harold Wilson. Both Law and Home were certainly 'unexpected' Prime Ministers, but both were also 'under-estimated' and they made lasting beneficial changes to the political system, both on a national and a party level. The unexpectedness of their accessions to the top of the greasy pole, and the brevity of their Premierships (they were the two shortest of the 20th century, Bonar Law's one day short of seven months, Alec Douglas-Home's two days short of a year), are not an accurate indication of their respective significance, even if the precise details of their careers were not always accurately recalled, even by their admirers. The Westminster village is often another world to the general public. Stanley Baldwin was once accosted on a train from Chequers to London, at the height of his fame, by a former school friend.

    Britain and Europe ROBERT COOPER Forty years after Britain joined Europe both have changed, mostly for the better. This story does not, however, begin in 1972 when the negotiations finished and were ratified by parliament, nor in 1973 when the UK took its place at the Council table as a full member, but ten years before with the first British application and the veto by General de Gaulle. Sometimes, going further back still, it is suggested that if Ernest Bevin’s ideas for West European cooperation had been pursued,1 or if Britain had decided to join talks on the Schuman Plan,2 or to take the Spaak Committee seriously,3 things might have been different. But the truth is there was no Robert Schuman or Jean Monnet in Britain, and no readiness to think in radically new terms. Had the UK been present at the negotiations that led to the European Coal and Steel Community, the outcome for Britain would probably still have been the same, precisely because the vision was lacking. The decision on the Schuman Plan was a close-run thing—the idea of planning for heavy industry being in accordance with the ideas of the Labour government. But British ideas were very different from those of the French or the Americans, who were thinking in terms of supranational bodies—indeed, for Monnet this was a cardinal point. His approach was supported by the Benelux countries, which were already setting up their own customs union. Bevin had an ambition to lead Europe, but it is not clear where he wanted to take it.
