They spend a lot of time together, eating homemade meals, playing Scrabble and watching TV. While drinking with his friend Jimmy (Clark Johnson), Franklin expresses that he loves zora because she listens and they talk more than to have sex. Jimmy then repays the loan that Franklin made him. Franklin uses some of the money to pull the piano out of the layaway. zora then auditions for up-and-coming producer Reggie Baptiste (I-Tip), and gets a cut deal to do a six-song demo with him. Franklin admits that he dropped out of school in the eleventh grade without earning a GED. He also tells her that although he has been separated for the past four years, he is still married and has two sons. zora doesn't take the news well, and Franklin accuses her of caring more about the degree and dollars than their relationship. The next day, he finds Franklin at work and admits that she wouldn't be connected to him if she knew the truth about him before. She then admits that she loves him and asks him to move in with her, expressing a desire to meet her children. In turn, he tells her that he loves her and promises that as soon as he gets the money, he will get a divorce. She meets Franklin's sons, Marcus (Decwan Henderson) and Tyree (Fernando Feifer Cameron), and while the younger Tyree quickly warms up to the zora after she teaches him some notes on the piano, Marcus is not so welcoming to her. Despite all the obstacles, the couple continues to fall deeper in love, but everything comes to mind when zora suffers an epileptic seizure during sleep. The next morning, when Franklin confronted why he never knew about her condition, she says she didn't want to scare him away. Franklin assures her it will take than this is him to leave. A short time later, she became pregnant. She wants to have an abortion because she doesn't think the time is right. But Franklin convinces her to leave the child, and nine months later she gives birth to a boy named Jeremiah. After the birth of a child, times get very hard for zora and Frankie. He's out of work again and because of this he drinks and forgets to pick up the baby from kindergarten, it forces zora to leave work to pick up the child and skip her recording session with Reg. Reg is unhappy about this so she loses her demo deal. One night, they broke into a heated argument and broke up. Frankie's broken heart drinks and plays sad recordings, while zora sleeps in another room. Frankie then goes into the room and tries to have makeup sex with zor, she pushes him away and says: I'm leaving, and when I get back tomorrow I want you out of my house. While she is far distraught and angry Frankie vandalized them once at home along with a hammer and leaves. It takes about seven months, and Franklin goes to the house of zora. He says he wants to see his son. She lets him in, and Frankie keeps her son and puts him to bed. The former couple then talk about what's going on. Frankie tells zora that he passes the contractor's test the next day and that he got a GED. She tells him that she writes songs and that one of them is on the radio. While walking outside the door Frankie talks about her love and how it was real no matter what time it was. He walks away and she follows him and says: I never beat you in Scrabble. He smiles, comes back upstairs, and they play Scrabble.     ABSTRACT Title of Document: ROMANCE, RACE AND RESISTANCE IN BEST-SELLING AFRICAN AMERICAN NARRATIVE Robin Virginia Smiles, Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Directed By: Professor Mary Helen Washington, Department of English This dissertation critically examines popular romantic fiction by African American writers and argues for its inclusion in the canons and curricula of African American literary studies. While novels that privilege themes of love and romance and that appeal primarily to a mass-market audience have tended to be cast as antithetical to matters of racial uplift and social protest, my work reverses this bias, establishing such texts as central to these concerns. I argue that popular romantic fiction and its authors have a particular story to tell in the history of African American literature, one that reveals a desire to address racial concerns but also, as importantly, to reach a wide audience. Using the work of critical race theorists and feminist studies of the romance and sentimental genres, I identify the “racial project” undertaken in the popular romantic fiction of three best-selling African American writers in the latter-half of the twentieth century-- Frank Yerby, Toni Morrison, and Terry McMillan. I begin my study with a discussion of the “contingencies of value” and the need for an ongoing process of canon revision in African American literary studies. In Chapter One, I argue that in his first published novel, The Foxes of Harrow (1946), Yerby uses the platform of historical romance to illuminate the instability and unreliability of racial identity. In Chapter Two, I argue that in Tar Baby (1981), Morrison integrates the narratives of romance and race to critique the popular romance genre’s lack of racial diversity and perpetuation of white female beauty.
