In Addition to the Documents Themselves, Introductory Essays, Annotation, and Most Ref- Erence Material Have Been Indexed Index In addition to the documents themselves, introductory essays, annotation, and most ref- erence material have been indexed. Most maps are not indexed; map coordinates for specific locations are given in the Geographical Directory. Spelling, punctuation, and capitalization of quotations have been standardized. Personal names are listed by their correct spellings, not by variant spellings that may be found in the documents, unless the correct spelling is unknown. Entries for married women are generally listed under the names used during the period covered by the volume, with appropriate cross-references under maiden names or other married names. Unidentified individuals, such as “Mrs. Frost,” are included in this index. In subentry text, Joseph Smith (JS) and Emma Smith (ES) are referred to by their initials. Recurring locations in the volume are referenced in subentries without state identifi- cation; these include Nauvoo (Ill.) and Kirtland (Ohio). When found in an entry, “id.” indicates an entry in the Biographical Directory or Geo- graphical Directory or other text that summarizes the topic, “def.” refers to a passage that defines the topic, “illus.” indicates a photograph or other illustration, and “handwriting of” identifies documents that an individual inscribed. Inside the coffins in connection with two mummies were two rolls and fragments of papyri. On opening the coffins, he [Michael H. Chandler] discovered that in connection with two of the bodies, was something rolled up with the same kind of linen, saturated with the same bitumen, which, when examined, proved to be two rolls of papyrus, previously Joseph Smith mentioned. Two or three other small ~ Mormonism founder pieces of papyrus, with astronomical calculations, epitaphs, &c., were found History of the Church 2:349 with others of the mummies. Since Joseph claimed to have translated "Reformed Egyptian" to produce the Book of Mormon (Mormon 9:32), and claimed to be a seer (D&C 124:125)—one who can "translate all records that are of ancient date" (Mosiah 8:13), he was approached to translate the characters on the papyri. On the 3rd of July, Michael H. Chandler came to Kirtland to exhibit some Egyptian mummies. There were four human figures, together with some two or more rolls of papyrus covered with hieroglyphic figures and devices.

  • Primary 5 Manual
Lesson Joseph Smith Writes 36 the Articles of Faith Purpose To strengthen the children’s desire to understand and memorize the Articles of Faith. Preparation 1. Prayerfully study the Articles of Faith, located at the end of the Pearl of Great Price, and the historical account given in this lesson. Then study the lesson and decide how you want to teach the children the scriptural and historical accounts. (See “Preparing Your Lessons,” pp. vi–vii, and “Teaching the Scriptural and Historical Accounts,” pp. vii–ix.) 2. Select the discussion questions and enrichment activities that will involve the children and best help them achieve the purpose of the lesson. 3. Materials needed: a. A Pearl of Great Price for each child. b. Articles of Faith charts from the meetinghouse library (65001–65013 or 65014, which contains all thirteen Articles of Faith). Suggested Lesson Development Invite a child to give the opening prayer. Attention Activity • What kind of mathematics are you studying in school? After the children respond, write the following algebra problem on the chalkboard: a2 +b2 = 25 • Why might this problem be difficult for you to solve? • Before you can do algebra problems, what do you first need to learn? Explain that before they learn how to do algebra problems, the children need to learn basic mathematical principles. Similarly, to learn and understand the gospel, we must first learn the basic principles of the gospel. Explain that the Prophet Joseph Smith wrote thirteen statements that briefly summarize some of the basic principles and beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

There were four human figures, together with some two or more rolls of papyrus covered with hieroglyphic figures and devices.”¹ July 6–8 Joseph Smith’s history: “with W. W. Phelps and Oliver Cowdery as scribes, I commenced the translation of some of the characters or hieroglyphics, and much to our joy found that one of the rolls contained the writings of Abraham, another the writings of Joseph of Egypt.”² July John Whitmer: “About the first of July I835 there came a man having four Egyptian Mummies exhibiting them for curiosities, which was a wonder indeed having also some records connected with them which were found deposited with the Mummies, but there being no one skilled in the Egyptian language therefore [he] could not translate the record, after this exhibition Joseph the Seer saw these Record[s] and by the revelation of Jesus Christ could translate these records, which gave an account of our forefathers, . Much of which was written by Joseph of Egypt who was sold by his brethren Which when all translated will be a pleasing history and of great value to the saints.”³ 1. History of the Church 2:235. This entry is not in the journals of Joseph Smith. W. W. Phelps likely inserted it in Nauvoo in 1843. 2. History of the Church 2:236. Again, W. W. Phelps probably inserted this entry in 1843. 3. BIBLIOGRAPHIC CONTRIBUTIONS NO. Sources of Mormon History in Illinois, 1839-48: An Annotated Catalog of the Microfilm Collection at Southern Illinois University Compiled by STANLEY B. KIMBALL 2nd edition, revised and enlarged, 1966 The Library SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY Carbondale—Edwardsville Bibliographic Contributions No. 1 SOURCES OF MORMON HISTORY IN ILLINOIS, 1839-48 An Annotated Catalog of the Microfilm Collection at Southern Illinois University 2nd edition, revised and enlarged, 1966 Compiled by Stanley B. Kimball Central Publications Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Illinois ©2014 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 2nd edition, revised and enlarged, May, 1966 FOREWORD In the course of developing a book and manuscript collection and in providing reference service to students and faculty, a univeristy library frequently prepares special bibliographies, some of which may prove to be of more than local interest. The Bibliographic Contributions series, of which this is the first number, has been created as a means of sharing the results of such biblio graphic efforts with our colleagues in other universities. The contribu tions to this series will appear at irregular intervals, will vary widely in subject matter and in comprehensiveness, and will not necessarily follow a uniform bibliographic format. Because many of the contributions will be by-products of more extensive research or will be of a tentative nature, the series is presented in this format. Comments, additions, and corrections will be welcomed by the compilers. The author of the initial contribution in the series is Associate Professor of History of Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois. He has been engaged in research on the Nauvoo period of the Mormon Church since he came to the university in 1959 and has published numerous articles on this subject.
