MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Here we are again in December and like we hear most of you say, where has the year gone! Here, at the Community House, the weeks and months just fly by keeping up with all of our activities and events. As our population has increased, we have welcomed many new members to our Community House this year who have joined one or several of our regular activities.

As one of the largest member based organisations in Loch Sport we would like to thank all of our members, group facilitators and volunteers for all the help it takes to run our organisation.

A very successful community day was held in the Public Hall last month showcasing to members of the public many of the groups and committee’s that exist in our town. Quite a few new-comers to the town were surprised to learn how much happens in Loch Sport. Some organisations acquired new members from this open day and others enlisted as committee members for their chosen interest.

As most of you know, our Cup community market changed its venue to the LakeView Bar & Bistro as a trial, allowing us to invite more stall holders and have more space. The morning was an overwhelming success, with stall holders reporting record sales and the general public loved the free-flowing, relaxed atmosphere with plenty of room to move around and socialise. We were absolutely blessed with a break in the weather.

A big thank you again to all of the volunteers that worked together to make the market come together. We look forward to holding our March Labour Day market there also.

Our annual Gippsport Walktober Challenge took place in November. Gippsport ask the regions Community Houses to encourage our members to take part in recording our walking steps for two weeks. We are proud to say that we have just been announced the winners for the second year in a row. This year we accumulated 4,062,147 steps.

In early November, we hosted the boat licence course for Loch Sport Fishing Association and successfully hooked fourteen new captains. This was so popular, it will be run again soon.

Our final event of the year will be the enormously popuar Twilight Market on 28 December. Enticing the locals again with mouth watering food from our food vendors, a great array of market stalls, a sand sculpture and pony rides. See you there for a great afternoon.

Volume 22 - Issue 6 - Page 5 LOCH SPORT COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVE GROUP

meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month, except 2nd Tuesday in November at 10am in the Public Hall (no meeting in January). AGM IN December Letters to the Secretary LSCRG PO Box 129 Loch Sport 3851 Email: [email protected] Website www.lochsportcrg.org.au

A new look for our CRG.

The Wellington shire is changing the way the LS CRG will interact with local planning groups. In future we will not be required to produce a community plan but recommend projects under the new title of the Community Collaborations Program; each will be an individual group project.

Our strength is in our numbers as a community group who puts forward a project will be far stronger than individuals contacting council with ideas. As a community we can have a bigger voice than individuals. Each project is important to our community as we live here. LS CRG has good track records for local projects including the skateboard park and the footpath on National Park Rd, which needs to be extended. We need community support to carry these projects to fruition.

If you have a passion for the future of Loch Sport come along and get involved in your community group. If you are not getting any satisfaction from sending a CAR (Customer Action Request) to Council bring it to everyone’s attention via the CRG. If you have an idea for something in Loch Sport please come along to a meeting and share it with others.

We have a facebook page “What’s on in Loch Sport” and a large Mailchimp database for monthly news from the meetings and receive important information from government groups. Register if you wish to receive emails. [email protected]

The Annual General Meeting of the Loch Sport CRG will be held on Tuesday December 3 at 10 am at the Loch Sport Public Hall.

The group needs committee members, especially a secretary. If you qualify as a Centrelink volunteer this could be the job for you. Contact LS CRG President Barry Meyer through [email protected] to discuss the position.

Summer is now here, with our busy time approaching. Our spring trading was well patronized once again.

Our country and western night was a fun night, thanks to Bella and the Kitchen staff for putting on a great night.

Melbourne Cup week-end started off with Cats in the Kitchen playing on Sunday and Monday night. The Calcutta night was once again a success with horses being auctioned off and the band playing until wee hours of the morning. Cup Day Lunch was prepared by the Women’s Auxiliary and once again they put on a marvellous spread of chicken and salad followerd by a glass of champagne, with the sweeps, raffles and the Loch Sport Cup. It ended up a wonderful day.

Remembrance Day was held on Monday 11th November with a service followed by refreshments, our thanks go out to Rob and Robin for their contribution to the service.

On Saturday December 8th we will be holding a Trivia night at the RSL, Meals will be available from 6pm, with Trivia starting at 7.45pm and a cost of $10.00 per person will be charged to play Trivia to cover costs, please book your seat with Bella at the Bar on 51460841.

The Committee of the Loch Sport RSL wish you all a safe and Happy Christmas and 2020.

RSL WOMENS AUXILIARY

I am Sorry to say that we have another Vale in this LINK as a life member of the Loch Sport RSL passed away in October. Past president Mrs Mary Bruce worked with the Women’s Auxiliary for many years and will be sadly missed by all.

Our Christmas raffle is well under way, with many gift baskets to choose from.

We have two new Auxiliary Members in Michelle and Mary and we thank them very much for coming on board to help out our ladies.

If you know someone in our community that needs a little help please inform one of our Auxiliary members. The Auxiliary Ladies wish you all a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year.

Loch Sport RSL Women’s Auxiliary Committee.

LOCH SPORT MEN'S SHED

Firstly I would like to thank all those who supported our Cup weekend raffle. We had a great range of goods and vouchers donated by local and Sale businesses.

The winners were: 1st: Ray Johnson (Wheelbarrow of goodies) 2nd: Aaron Watson (Outdoor setting and extras) 3rd: Bob Dodd (Bird feeder, seed and extras).

The raffle was drawn on Cup eve at the Men's Shed by 6 year old Billy (a visitor). The sausage sizzle and garage sale was very successful once again. We also had a sausage sizzle at the fire station on Grand Final Sunday. Thanks to the Fire Brigade for the use of their facilities.

Thanks again to the CRG and Community House for advertising our events. This is very much appreciated. We are also planning a Christmas raffle, details being finalised shortly.

Quite a number of community projects were completed this year. Good use was made of donated materials from pot plants to building materials, etc.

Once again, on behalf of all of our members, thank you. Best wishes for a safe and happy Christmas and prosperous 2020.

Murray Brown, President Volume 22 - Issue 6 - Page 8 For your information LOCH SPORT FIRE BRIGADE FIRE STATION 5146 0997 EMERGENCY DIAL 000

G’day All again it’s that time, doesn’t time fly. Well we are back into FIRE SEASON please be very careful. No drum fires and no fires in those washing machine drums most of you have used. You may have a small camp fire but it must be a trench 30 centimetres deep with a distance of 3 metres from the outer perimeters of the fire and the uppermost point of the fire is clear of flammable material. Have some rocks around the pit and have a hose nearby at all times. Extinguish the flame before leaving.

Come down to the fire station any Sunday morning and pick up a pamphlet on what you can do and what not to do. The area of Loch Sport and the surrounds are pretty dry and won’t take much to get it going so be vigilant .

The Brigade has two new members just about ready to do their minimum skills and jump onto a truck with the rest of us. They are Bernie Massman and Andrew Speirs - both locals, also a new lady signing up shortly. If you would like to join up and become a firefighter call in any Sunday morning between 08:30 and 12:30 ask for Captain Dennis Berg, we can have a chat and take it from there. On the other hand, if you don’t want to be a firefighter but would like to help out a the OP Shop on a Sunday morning picking up and delivering goods, you too should come down and talk to me over a cup of coffee. You're all welcome.

House Numbers. How hard is it to put a number on your house? Since the last time I put this in the Link I have found 5 people who have affixed numbers that we can read. By we I mean the Fire Brigade, The Ambos, the SES, the tradies and the delivery people. All of these people waste a lot of time looking for numbers. There is one place in Sanctuary Road where the family have put a lot of effort into their number that everyone can see. If I was giving out a prize for numbering your house, this one would win. You know who you are - good on you. Call in for a coffee and a bickie some time.

Well, what else can I tell you. A lot of you called in for our open day for a free sausage and a couple of give aways. The Men’s Shed had a number plate security fixing day which was also a well-attended day. The Lions had a successful sausage sizzle day. If you or your team would like to promote an event with a sausage sizzle here at the Fire Station one Sunday morning call in and see us.

The new Supermarket is looking good and will be open by Christmas. I reckon Gary Powers new digs are looking good and also the Lakeview Bar and Bistro are kicking goals. The Community House had a market day on the grass there and it was packed. It’s all happening in Loch Sport stay safe people and take care.

Dennis Berg Captain Loch Sport Fire Brigade.

SES LOCH SPORT UNIT

Well, another year has passed and I am very pleased to advise that the Loch Sport SES has come along and is still progressing to ensure that the service we deliver is of a very high standard. We have a great crew of members.

I would like to thank them for all the time they put into training and attending to emergency call outs. Without these members we would be unable to provide the service that is required to attend to emergency call outs. I would also like to thank the individuals and companies that have supported us throughout the year. Without their generosity it would be impossible to keep the unit in full operational order.

With the warmer months coming along, we will see our small community increase and I would like to see that we can all come together and ensure the safety of our residents and visitors as well as the safety of our abundant wildlife with which we share our community. Please drive safely and be aware that we don’t only share our roads with humans but with our wildlife as well.

The past few months have seen a massive amount of training undertaken by our members. The team will be in attendance at the New Year’s Eve fireworks display, and it would be great if you could all support your local SES by purchasing some refreshments from us. Any purchase will assist in the continued operation of the unit. We will also be in attendance at the markets and please call in and obtain any information we have to assist in your emergency action plan.

We are still looking for volunteers to be operational members of the Loch Sport SES Unit. If you need any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the shed, we are there on Wednesday evenings from 5.00pm or on a Sunday morning. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Please enjoy yourselves and take care and stay safe.

Terry Ford

SES Unit Controller Loch Sport.

Volume 22 - Issue 6 - Page 9 LOCH SPORT GOLF CLUB

Spring has arrived and with it we hope some warmer weather, a bit of rain and sun to make the grass grow. The course has been maintained to a great standard over winter and thanks must go to the intrepid volunteers who spend hour upon hour working on not only the course but also to maintain and service the equipment etc.

As reported in the last Link, members of the Club attended the Sand Green Championships at Avoca and a great time was had by all, no success unfortunately when it came to prizes, however it was a valuable learning experience and should help us host a great event in August 2020.

A family fun day was held in October which was a great success, and another will be held on Sunday 1st December at 11am for a sausage sizzle and 9 holes of golf. Keep your eye on facebook to stay up to date.

Our AGM will be held on 7th December 2019 at 9am and we would love to see all members attend. An updated constitution and by-laws will be presented to the meeting for approval and this should help take us forward into the future. The Club is also formulating a strategic plan to also ensure continued growth.

Over the holiday period from Wed 18th December until Wed 8th January, inclusive, an 18 hole stableford competition will be run each Wednesday & Saturday.

An update on our building project – the DA has been approved by Council so that makes us one step closer, we are now in the process of having detailed plans and specifications produced to allow us to apply for further funding.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and safe and prosperous New Year and as always, Happy Golfing.

LOCH SPORT SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB Inc.

The seniors annual mystery trip was Friday the 11th October, it was a mystery to all of us as I left it all in Porky, our bus driver’s extraordinaire hands. Our first destination was to Kilmany Mansion, a truly magnificent old mansion and homestead, we were greeted by the staff and the niece of the current owner of the property, who gave us a short talk on the history of the property. We were then able to wander through the house both upstairs and down, all the wonderful period furniture and artifacts beautifully restored, a few of the rooms are available as bed and breakfast.

For morning tea we all sat around a massive dining table and were served scones jam and cream, tea or coffee all served from silver pots and bone china tea cups, it was a most enjoyable start to the day. We all climbed on board the bus and headed back into Sale to the old Water Tower which has been fully restored. Most of us braved the climb up to the top, what a fabulous view.

There is a lot of history in and around Sale that many of us are unaware of. Porky then took us on a drive around Sale. Val, our tour guide for the day, pointed out all the places of historic interest, buildings, Port of Sale Botanic gardens. We were then taken to the Powder Magazine tucked away behind lake Guthridge and the Botanic gardens, very interesting indeed, then onto the Star Hotel for lunch before heading home, it really was a lovely day.

On Sunday the 10th November a bus load of us seniors went to the Sale Greyhound Club, where we had dinner and watched the doggies run from the alfresco dining area right on the winning post. We have made this an annual trip for the last 4 years and thoroughly enjoy the food and seeing the doggies run. The trip home was most enjoyable with an old fashioned sing song, all the oldies, what else!!

Our Christmas breakup luncheon will be held on Tuesday the 3rd December at the Loch Sport Bowls Club. We have returned to the Bowls Club again as last year was so successful. They really do a great job on the food and creating the atmosphere of Christmas. This year we are trying a new format with Kris Kringle being introduced, so if you haven't already got your names down I suggest you do so as soon as possible.

Our AGM will be held on Monday 18th November but as the LINK will be going to press before that, results will be printed in the next edition.

The committee would like to extend their warmest Christmas greetings to all and may you all have a happy, joyous, safe and healthy New Year 2020.

We would like to encourage anybody who may be interested in joining our Seniors Club, anybody 55 years and over is eligible to join.

New Members Always Welcome. Secretary, Christine Potter ph. 51460796.

KEEP FIT AND HEALTHY

With 54% of the Wellington shire population being overweight or obese there is an urgent need to understand the causes of this situation and identify ways to safeguard against its serious potential consequences, including developing high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, joint conditions, some cancers and possibly even depression.

Our metabolism converts the foods we eat into the energy needed to fuel the complexities of the body. Physical activity has a basic function in this process. Nutritious foods are essential for good health and serves of two fruits and five vegetables are recommended daily. However it is important to realise that because most of us are less physically active than ever before, our typically generous diets can lead to weight gain. It is therefore essential to be physically active every day to maintain a healthy body weight. This takes time and effort but the results are rewarding.

There are many options available to be more physically active. Establishing a regular routine that suits us is fundamental and selecting enjoyable activities means they’re more likely to be performed regularly. Walking, jogging, and riding are examples of very beneficial activities outside the home, especially when performed with gusto! Activities with music are enjoyable. Health authorities recommend a weekly target of 150 minutes of exercise. A couple of sessions of strength exercises are inclusively recommended for improving muscle and bone health.

Most work situations don’t involve much physical activity but employers should realise that productivity can be optimised when staff are healthy. Many jobs involve extended times sitting, so getting off the seat and standing or walking every half hour is important. Parking a distance away from work to extend walking time or riding a bicycle to work are some examples of being more active during a workday, as is taking a walk during a break alone or with workmates. Locating printers and photocopiers some distance from the desk can encourage more activity during the day. Activities that get us huffing and puffing are especially beneficial.

Time to protect yourself with high numbers of mozzies detected

• Apply mosquito repellent regularly (every four hours). Repellents containing DEET or Picaridin are recommended, and are most effective and long lasting in a lotion form • Attach insect screens to the windows and doors of your house to allow air in and keep mosquitoes out • Avoid outside areas at dawn and dusk • Use an insecticide in sleeping areas, according to instructions • Wear light coloured, loose fitting clothes with long sleeves and long trousers Mosquitoes are attracted to dark coloured clothes and can bite through tight clothes • Ensure flyscreens on houses, caravans and annexes are in good condition with no gaps • When camping, take precautions such as using flyscreens on caravans and tents, and by sleeping under mosquito nets • Take particular care while fishing, ensuring that you follow personal precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

Foodworks Supermarket Update

As you may have seen the new Supermarket is progressing well and the two units above the Supermarket have been sold. The Builders are doing an awesome job and are working around the clock so that we can open before Christmas.

Once we open, the Supermarket will be a state of the art Foodworks store with over 1000 new products and weekly specials.

Commencing February, we will be starting deliveries to the Loch Sport Township and we will also be implementing loyalty cards.

Many people are asking about the next stage of the development, we envisage that we will be starting in early March to have it completed for Christmas 2020.

There has been a lot of enquiries around tenancies for the extra shops and what we do know is that there will be a coffee shop/takeaway/licenced eatery in the second stage along with Central Gippsland Health Services.

Anybody interested in tenancies can contact Rachelle Potts at CShell Real Estate.

If you would like to look at units online go to www.lakevictoriaapartments.com.au and you can see all the units on display.

With the onset of the Christmas Festive season, we would like to wish all our customers and suppliers a Merry and safe Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We would also like to thank all of our customers for supporting their Local Supermarket.

Coming up to Christmas there will be a few disruptions and we hope everyone will understand that we are trying our best to limit any inconvenience to our Customers.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

From the Staff, Styles and Edey Families Foodworks Loch Sport

Volume 22 - Issue 6 - Page 35 OUR HAVEN WILDLIFE SHELTER

Our Haven would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that have supported them in their quest to save our local fauna. Donations are always welcome, particularly as the shelter continues their goal to secure a more suitable land mass to care for and safely release orphaned joeys (kangaroos and wallabies).

The last 7 years of dedication has been very taxing, in time, finances and emotional stress.

Due to this, and on top of their own family obligations, Theresa and Tony (Scruff) respectfully ask that you take the time to think before alerting or dropping off injured animals. They are not veterinarians and cannot continue to bear the costs involved in these circumstances.

They will continue to do their best nurturing the young of killed and injured kangaroos and wallabies.

At this time of year, fledglings (young birds) are commonly seen on the ground. Please note that this is a natural occurrence, and a parent bird will usually be close by. If after careful observation you believe they are injured or at risk, please contact Vic Wildlife (details below).

Also, please consider that our native wildlife depend on our flora for housing, protection and food. Please look, before you cut trees, branches etc. If you must cut, please consider rehoming any animals that may be affected. (see Vic Wildlife details below).

If you see dead or injured animals on the side of the road, please check to see if they have babies in their pouches or nearby and/or ring Theresa or Tony so that they can check them, depending on the circumstances. The earlier any baby is found the more chance it has of surviving.

To contact Theresa and Tony please ring 0400 079 337, alternatively contact Vic Wildlife 13 000 94535/88400 7300 or Sale Police 5142 2200, depending on the circumstances.

In order to help reduce injury, accident or damage, please consider applying “Shoo Roos” to your vehicle. These small, easy to install devices emit a high pitch sound (not heard by humans) that warn wildlife of coming traffic, available at most auto outlets at under $10.00.

Note: Bread should NEVER be fed to Kangaroos/Wallabies. Doing so can result in a condition known as “Lumpy Jaw Disease”. This causes a bacterial infection in the soft tissue and jaw, which can lead to death by starvation. The kindest thing anyone can do to help or attract, is provide fresh water given that we live in a salt environment and our climate has been so dry. If you provide water in a deep container, please place a brick or branch in there to prevent possible drowning.

“A very Merry and safe festive season to all”

Volume 22 - Issue 6 - Page 39 HOROSCOPES ARIES: (March 21- April 20) Lucky Colour: Dark Green; Lucky Day: Tuesday; Racing Numbers: 4-5-5-9; Lotto Numbers: 3-18-23-28-32-33 The best thing to do now is to get stuck into your most immediate jobs and let others be for a while. Try asking someone to help you and you will have time to rest a little also. A good period for keeping fit and looking after your health. Your moods are also very important to your health so try to keep peace with your loved ones. A surprise visitor is possible. If planning any changes to your environment during this period, make sure you know what to tackle first. Might be an idea to consult some professional people to get things right the first time around. Not wise to mix business with pleasure during this period as it is not a good time for frivolities. Most of your problems should be able to solve themselves suddenly. You might be asked to help a friend in need and through this you might get in contact with people you have wanted to meet for some time. Some luck with an Aries person.

TAURUS: (April 21- May 20) Lucky Colour: Brown; Lucky Day: Saturday; Racing Numbers: 1-9-7-3; Lotto Numbers: 3-11-13-24-31-33 Some happy surprises and gifts coming your way and your love life should be great. Some travel plans might not go as planned but you will still enjoy yourself. Financial improvements are indicated. Your emotional life should be getting more stable and less problems with loved ones are indicated. There could be some changes in real estate matters concerning you or someone close. There could be some thoughts going towards travel – long distance or may be a move to a new place. Not a good time to confide in people – secrets have a way of coming into the open. It should be a very happy period to look forward to and lots of people around you and many new things to do. Someone you have been in two minds about will show their true colours. Possibility of some travel and making new friends who could make a difference in your future. Many things could be happening at once and slightly confuse you in your decision making.

GEMINI: (May 21- June 21) Lucky Colour: Yellow; Lucky Day: Sunday; Racing Numbers: 7-2-3-5; Lotto Numbers: 12-23-25-30-38-44 A very bad period for bargains so keeps your purse strings tight – a ‘good deal’ could turn out to be anything but. To succeed in career and business more effort and less contemplation. Beneficial influences favour your hunches where financial matters are concerned. Your love life could take up a lot of your time and someone close could be about to put a spoke in your wheel. A bit of lucky shopping for a bargain or two could come about. A romantic venture could have a touch of magic about it. There could be some luck in property transactions. Short trip discussions and meetings could be more trouble than they are worth, particularly if they involve money. Business could interfere in your home affairs – many could consider spending to boost the value of their property. After some confusion or doubt, you and your loved ones should be able to get together to work things out. Plans for social gatherings are indicated and should have a very happy if unexpected outcome.

CANCER: (June 22- July 22) Lucky Colour: Blue; Lucky Day: Wednesday; Racing Numbers: 6-2-5-6; Lotto Numbers: 13-20-26-31-32-40 It’s time to look seriously at health matters – if you know what you are doing wrong do something about it. Not a good time for secrets, they will slip out so discretion is called for. Not the time to blow up or act emotionally at your place of work as misunderstandings are possible with co workers. Do take care of your personal relationships and loved ones. Not the time to trust your intuition as you could be very wrong during this period. All financial and business affairs should be conducted in very strict confidence. Not the time to trust people you do not know and keep away from business that is not your affairs. Not a very good period for socialising with unusual sorts or weird places.

LEO: (July 23- August 22) Lucky Colour: Gold; Lucky Day: Monday; Racing Numbers: 4-6-2-5; Lotto Numbers: 1-9-18-29-36-37 Positive thinking is the way to go during this period otherwise you could defeat your own good ideas. Something good and interesting will be coming your way and people will appreciate your hard work. It may be wiser to keep a tight reign on financial spending or costs could suddenly magnify well past your original budget. Someone in a position to further your ambitions could be of help. Your emotional and love life shows progress and those who have been endeavouring to rekindle the embers of an old flame could get over heated. Unwise to play hunches – stick to facts and double check any important information before acting upon it. Romance could blossom quite unexpectedly.

VIRGO: (August 23- September 23) Lucky Colour: Plum; Lucky Day: Saturday; Racing Numbers: 5-1-2-8; Lotto Numbers: 8-19-24-30-31-42 Most of your plans for this period will succeed and the few additional happy moments with your loved ones will help you to enjoy the time. Not a good time to mix business with pleasure. Good period for love and romance – if looking for the right one this could be the period to find one. In business and career some big decisions are coming up and your wits are needed to be sharp. A rare combination of luck and intuition could pay off in many ways and many could be on the ground floor of a very profitable financial venture. Take a ticket with a Virgo person. Wiser to avoid a head-on clash with loved ones or partners. Many will realise that knowing the right people will count.

A good time to further your important aims and desires. Most could be in for more travelling than usual and someone you could meet during the trip could alter your present outlook on most things.

SCORPIO: (October 24- November 22) Lucky Colour: Red; Lucky Day: Thursday; Racing Numbers: 8-2-4-1; Lotto Numbers: 2-17-19-27-39-44 Maybe it’s time for you to learn some new tricks of the trade. Sometimes it is more enterprising to admit to a defeat than trying to fake it. Some busy times with old family members and invitations to parties. Your attention could be taken by something new and exotic in the romantic field. Work matters are pressing and rest and relaxation could be a little hard to organise. Impulsiveness may need more positive control. It is very important to communicate with spouse or lover as the aspects for misunderstandings could be more difficult. Could be time to prepare for the unexpected around your work place. Entertaining through this period could go very well and accept invitations to appear more publicly with loved ones. Friends could cause trouble or be uncooperative about any new love affair you are dealing with. Someone close could be showing a little more jealousy. Domestic affairs could interfere with your career or public image and the only way to avoid this will be by careful planning. Unwise to make an emotional decision at this time.

SAGITTARIUS: (November 23- December 20) Lucky Colour: Aqua; Lucky Day Monday; Racing Numbers: 7-2-4-3; Lotto Numbers: 10-18-21-32-33-41 A little bit of a hard period to judge if you should go ahead or not. Relationship matters might not be progressing as well as you would like them to – keep calm and let nature take its course. CAPRICORN: (December 21- January 19) Lucky Colour: Green; Lucky Day Saturday; Racing Numbers: 5-1-8-3; Lotto Numbers: 4-12-18-26-30-32 Love and romance could be costly so try to avoid expensive places. There is someone who could be of great help in your decision making about a career matter. Try to keep cool in a hassle. Time to take your loved one’s interests at heart and forget about your own fun. There should be a surprise in store for you during this period and more interests in your ideas. A period in which it is hard to distinguish between the good and the bad in business and financial matters, so keep your options open and make up your mind later on. There should be a windfall coming your way soon and some of your past efforts should also be paying off now. Plans for holidays later in the year could be very much in your mind. Be on the lookout for job or health progress. Some contacts could bring immediate success while others could be a little off into the future. Your health could be rewarded. Money interests could be working out better than domestic ones. Don’t count on other people – use your own ideas and be ready for any eventuality.

AQUARIUS: (January 20- February 19) Lucky Colour: Aqua; Lucky Day: Monday; Racing Numbers: 2-6-3-7; Lotto Numbers: 5-15-22-26-30-43 No overindulgence during this period if you are serious about your health. Not a good time to take risks in business either. Love life should be better but caution is needed with irritable people. Not a good period for gambling and speculating – bet only on a sure thing. You should be able to enjoy some free time and bring some joy to your loved ones. Try your charm on a Libra. There could be big changes coming up in your lifestyle and important people to meet. It should be an easier time for finances and some luck in this area will also help. There’s a lot going for you and the right word in the right ear could work wonders. Wise to double check your long-term investments – make sure you know all the financial limitations before taking on added expenses. Travel could bring pleasure.

PISCES: (February 20- March 20) Lucky Colour: Red; Lucky Day: Wednesday; Racing Numbers: 4-8-1-6; Lotto Numbers: 2-17-23-26-35-36 Very romantic and loving period and your ideas will be readily accepted by loved ones. Try not to get people to misunderstand you and you should be able to get your way in most things. New responsibilities should be handled with care and given priority in your life now. Short trips or unexpected travel should be taken with care and bookings confirmed for possible problems. Romantically speaking, this should be a good time and some will be in for new and exciting opportunities. Careful with brushes involving older people. Most can get a lot of pleasure out of impromptu entertaining. Business matters could turn out a little less than expected or hoped for. A good time to get to know a lot better that special someone.

FISHING REPORTS: Ninety Mile Beach:

As the weather is warming up, plenty of fishermen have been hitting the beach enjoying generally good wind and ocean conditions with some good catches being reported. There hasn’t been any weed to frustrate the fishermen but the crabs can be a nuisance. Salmon are around and flathead are being caught in good numbers – also some really good gummy sharks. Those fishing beyond the outer sand bank using drones and kayaks have captured some heavy duty bronze whalers and gummies – fresh salmon fillets are doing the trick. The best baits for the other species continue to be pilchard, blue bait, squid and blue & silver poppers – the poppers are taking 50% of all fish caught.

Lakes & Rivers: There is still not a lot to report as not too many guys have been out on the lakes but some bream are being caught close to the river mouths or upstream, mainly on peeled prawns. Lots of mullet and garfish are on the move in the lakes and the dolphins are active all around the lakes chasing the large schools of bait fish. We are looking forward to a very productive summer season.

TRY THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES

Australian salmon (or kahawai as the Kiwis know it) is a much maligned fish, generally not regarded as a good eating fish – but if anyone can make an excellent meal of it, a Kiwi can, so here are two recipes to try:

Honey Glazed Kahawai: Ingredients: ½ cup of honey 2 tsp brown sugar 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp lime or lemon juice 2 tsp fish sauce 4 pieces of skinless kahawai fillets (remove the blood line) 1 large red onion cut into 5mm thick wedges 1 tbsp olive oil ½ tp salt ¼ tsp black pepper

Preheat the grill on high. In a small pan, combine the honey, sugar, soy sauce, lime or lemon juice & fish sauce. Heat through until the sugar has dissolved, taking care not to let it boil, then set aside. Place the kahawai and onion on a lined baking tray. Drizzle with the oil and season with the salt and pepper. Grill until the kahawai is opaque throughout (8-10 minutes), spooning half the soy sauce glaze over the fish for the last 2 minutes of grilling. Serve the kahawai & onion with the remaining warm glaze.

Volume 22 - Issue 6- Page 42 Fish Cakes:

Ingredients: 2 large potatoes, peeled and halved 500g of skinless kahawai fillets (remove blood line) I tbsp. butter 1 tbsp grated onion 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1 egg 3 tbsp of oil for frying

Place the potatoes in a large pot of water, bring to the boil and cook until the potatoes are almost tender. Add the fish to the pot and let the fish and the potatoes cook until they are both soft. Drain well and transfer to a large mixing bowl. Add the butter, onion, parsley and egg to the bowl and mash the mixture together. Shape the mixture into patties. Heat the oil in a large frypan over a medium heat. Fry the patties on both sides until golden brown. Drain on paper towels before serving with a squeeze of lemon juice. KIA MAKONA (Bon Appetit)

LOCH SPORT ANGLING CLUB

The Loch Sport Angling Club has had a few busy months which is always a good thing.

We had a great weekend away to Inverloch in October. With a great attendance we were sure to keep ourselves occupied. Whilst the weather was not favourable with strong winds preventing any serious fishing, we, none the less, were occupied by the bright lights of the town. We did however do a bit of research as to where the best fishing spots were and will be ready to give it a fair crack when we return.

As is the norm for incorporated clubs, we had our AGM in late October. Taking the steady as she goes approach, the standing committee was re-elected with the addition of Jack Stewart in a new position as Membership Officer. The club is travelling along well, due to members and locals ongoing loyalty and support, which we are all most appreciative. After the meeting a BBQ and frivolity was enjoyed by the attendees!

The club’s house at Benambra, in the Gippsland high country, has just been painted so is close to being ready for members to use. This will prove to be a great asset for the members and once set up will be a great change of scenery for locals to experience some of Victoria’s best trout fishing, comfortably housed 50 metres from a classic Aussie pub.

The clubs weekly Wednesday afternoon catch ups are going from strength to strength with a great group of members enjoying each other’s company in a relaxed and pleasant environment at the club rooms in Charles street reserve.

With Christmas on the horizon the club will be having its annual ham raffles on Friday 6th of December from 6pm at the Lakeview Hotel. The pub always puts on a great night the ham raffles being one of the biggest, we thank Peter and Tania for their ongoing support.

On the Saturday after the raffles, the club will be having their Xmas party at the club rooms for all members and their partners. It will be a great day with good food and Christmas cheer in abundance!

I can report that the members have been doing a bit of fishing with catches of salmon on the NMB proving that our guys still have what it takes.

If you think the LSAC sounds like the sort of club that would suit you, where we don’t take ourselves or our fishing too seriously have a chat to the guys at the Friday raffles at the hotel, they’ll fill you in on all the details.
