To All KAPAP Academy – Krav Panim El Panim family and friends, As you all know our last training was organized by our Holland representative Mr. William Paardekooper on Curacao Island . We had a great time and found really great great friends and new members for the KAPAP family. In this personal newsletter, I want to share our experiences with you. On my behalf and Albert Timen. On the island we found Rabbi Ariel Yeshurun, a great friend who was kind enough to host us and give us a tour of the old Curaco Island Synagogue, certainly the most impressive thing Albert and I have seen in last few years. I’ve attached a few pictures to share with you: first you will see the training, followed by some photos from our Curacao student Paul hard at work on an oil platform on the Caspian Sea, and finally a few impressive pictures from our tour of the synagogue in Curacao. Again want to Thank my new friend and Kapap Family Raul, Antonio, Paul & Helen, Ron, Bill, Edwin, Sharella, Sheila After return home to the snow ( see down pictures ) we play Pirates with my kid The information was taking from http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/vjw/Curacao.html The first Jew to arrive in Curacao was Samuel Cohen. He served as an interpreter on board the Dutch fleet under the command of Johan van Walbeeck, which conquered the island from the Spanish in 1634. A few years later, in 1651, Joao d’Ylan brought 10 to 12 Jewish families from the Amsterdam Portuguese community to Curaçao and established Congregation Mikvé Israel; they lived on Plantation ‘De Hoop’ (‘The Hope’) and worked the land. -
The Second World War in the Caribbean
Caribbean THINK BOOK for 4 and 5 May TEACHER’S GUIDE 2 THINK BOOK Connecting he National Committee for 4 and 5 May creates educational material about commemorating, celebrating, remembering, and freedom. For T years, the committee has published the 4 and 5 May Think Book in the Netherlands, for children in primary education. Because we have an eye for similarities and pay attention to di erences, we realized that we needed to do more justice to events and conditions in the Caribbean parts of the kingdom. That is why we made a fi rst special Caribbean edition of the 4 and 5 May Think Book in 2018. Three years later, we are publishing a new Caribbean edition. In recent years, we have had many conversations with the users of the Think Book on the islands. We have used this input and our experience to improve the Caribbean Think Book and have it tie in even better to the stories that live on the islands. As a result of our experience with the Caribbean Think Book, we have also adapted the edition for the Netherlands. Children in the Netherlands are now also learning a lot more about what happened on the Antillean islands during the Second World War. They can read about how young men such as George Maduro of Curaçao and Boy Ecury of Aruba fought for freedom in the Netherlands. And they hear about the crucial role the oil from Curaçao and Aruba played in ending the Second World War and what sacrifi ces the residents of the islands made for it. -

Literatuurlijst Sefardische Joden Van Curaçao Publicaties Verschenen

BONNIE S. WASSERMAN Judeotropicalism1: Jewish Transculturations in the Lusophone New World ABSTRACT: This paper conceptualizes Sephardic Jewish survival in the Iberian Peninsula and the so-called New World through the lens of Lusotropicalism, syncretism, transcul- turation and mestizaje. Beginning with the Edict of Expulsion in Spain and forced conver- sion to Catholicism in Portugal, New Christians face the violent side of transculturation. After the Inquisition is set up in Portugal, New Christians develop syncretic methods to worship as both Jews and Christians. Under a united peninsula between 1580-1640, Conversos fee to Holland where they unite with other Jews and become the Nação, a community whose identity is both religious and fnancial. This group goes with the Dutch West India Company to Recife where some Portuguese New Christians become Jews once again. After the Portuguese retake Recife, the Jews of the Nação fee to Suriname, developing mestizo communities there and in some of the Caribbean islands. Other Jews from Recife arrive in New Amsterdam (New York) where they establish a thriving commu- nity. After 500 years, the infuence of these groups can still be felt in the synagogues built in New York, the creole language Papiamentu/o spoken in Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire, and the tombstones in Suriname, Curação and Barbados, among other things. -

Ieudith Nunes Da Fonseca Ws Buried on the 5Th of Shebat 5428, the 18Th
The Cradle of Judaism in the Americas 350 years of Jewish Life in Curaçao It is a little known fact that the people of Curaçao, a rather small Caribbean island, played important roles in the success of Allied efforts during the Second World War. After the War, a monument was erected to commemorate the Antilleans who gave their lives for the War efforts, both locally, at sea and abroad. A plaque lists 162 names, amongst them George Maduro. As a reserve-officer in the Dutch army, George fought heroically during the War in the Netherlands. After the Dutch capitulated, he joined the resistance to help downed Allied pilots to escape via Spain. He was finally arrested by the Germans and perished in February 1945 in the camp at Dachau. George Maduro was a descendant of one of the first Jewish families to settle in Curaçao in the 1650’s and 60’s. The first Jew to arrive in Curaçao was Samuel Cohen. He served as an interpreter on board the Dutch fleet under the command of Johan van Walbeeck, which conquered the island from the Spanish in 1634. A few years later, in 1651, Joao d’Ylan brought 10 to 12 Jewish families from the Amsterdam Portuguese community to Curaçao and established Congregation Mikvé Israel in that same year; they lived on Plantations ‘De Hoop’ (‘The Hope’) and Bleinheyn where they tended the land. A second group of settlers followed in 1659 under the patronage of Isaac da Costa and brought with them on loan from the Amsterdam Synagogue: one of our first Torahs, still used today in the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue.
