Local places to visit……. Apedale County Park and Mine visits The Apedale Community Country Park is quite literally on our doorstep, offering 184 hectares of open space to explore. The park offers a varied landscape of woodland, meadows and pools crossed by many paths and tracks. Overlooking the park is a memorial in the form of a pit wheel dedicated to the mine workers of Staffordshire. This is the newest country park in Staffordshire in what was once a hive of industrial activity. As recently as the 1990s areas of the park were part of an open cast mine. However the area has been landscaped and restored and now provides a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Before that, the land was part of the Brampton Field – common land grazed and cultivated by the town burgesses. The name Brampton means ‘place where broom grew’. The Brampton Field was sold by the town burgesses after the 1845 Inclosure Act and was developed as a residential area for the towns professional classes, such as shopkeepers and business owners. The houses were built in the 1850s. Dry stone walls and sturdy barns add to the dramatic character of the steeply sided valleys while many of the hill tops are pitted with old quarries. Quarrying was certainly happening at Tegg's Nose in the 1500's and continued until 1955. Men blasted, hammered, hacked and chiselled away at the rock in harsh conditions for low wages. Today nature has softened the scars of industry and there is plenty to see at Tegg's whatever time of year. You don't have to go far to enjoy exhilarating views over the Cheshire Plain and on a clear day you can see Liverpool's cathedrals and Welsh hills beyond. The car park provides an excellent base for numerous walks and throughout the year there are many events taking place at the visitor centre.
