However, this orogenic style is not compatible with the presence of (ultra-)high pressure crustal and mantle rocks far from the plate interface in the Bohemian Massif of Central Europe. Here we use a comparison between geological observations and thermo-mechanical numerical models to explain their formation. 1234567890():,; We suggest that continental crust was first deeply subducted, then flowed laterally under- neath the lithosphere and eventually rose in the form of large partially molten trans- lithospheric diapirs. We further show that trans-lithospheric diapirism produces a specific rock association of (ultra-)high pressure crustal and mantle rocks and ultra-potassic magmas that alternates with the less metamorphosed rocks of the upper plate. Similar rock asso- ciations have been described in other convergent zones, both modern and ancient. There are some poems by local From the Constable poets to celebrate Liberation and some stories from St Saviour residents who were in Jersey when the Liberation forces arrived on that memorable day, 9th May 1945. It is always enlightening to read and hear of others’ stories from the Occupation and Liberation p4 of Jersey during the 1940s. Life was so very different then, from now, and it is difficult for us to imagine what life was really like for the children and adults living at that time. Giles Bois has submitted a most interesting article when St Saviour had to build a guardhouse on the south coast. The Parish was asked to help Grouville with patrolling Liberation Stories the coast looking for marauders and in 1690 both parishes were ordered to build a guardhouse at La Rocque. This article is a very good read and the historians among you will want to rush off to look for our Guardhouse! Photographs accompany the article to p11 illustrate the building in the early years and then later development. St Saviour Battle of Flowers Association is managing to keep itself alive with a picnic in St Paul’s Football Club playing field. They are also making their own paper flowers in different styles and designs; so please get in touch with the Association Secretary to help with Forever St Saviour making flowers for next year’s Battle.

    Przegl¹d Geologiczny, vol. 52, no. 8/2, 2004 The Sudetic geological mosaic: Insights into the root of the Variscan orogen Ryszard Kryza*, Stanis³aw Mazur*, Teresa Oberc-Dziedzic* A b s t r a c t: The Sudetes in the NE part of the Bohemian Massif stretch between the NW–SE-trending Odra Fault Zone and Elbe Fault Zone and represent a structural mosaic which was shaped, predominantly, during the Variscan orogeny. They are composed of various geological units, including basement units in which Neoproterozoic to Carboniferous rocks are exposed, and a post-orogenic cover of younger deposits. During the long history of geological research, the Sudetes have become a “type locality” for a range of important geological phenomena, such as granites and orthogneisses, ophiolites and (meta)volcanic sequences, granulites, eclogites and blueschists, nappe tectonics and terrane concepts. In spite of significant recent achievements, many key problems need further study, and a selection of them is proposed in this paper: (a) the presence of older, Neoproterozoic (Cadomian) rocks and their position within the Variscan collage, (b) the character and emplacement setting of Palaeozoic, pre-Variscan sedimentary successions and magmatic complexes (including ophiolites), (c) structural evolution, metamorphism (in particular HP/T grades) and exhumation of deeper crustal blocks during the Variscan orogeny, and (d) post-orogenic development. Future investigations would require an interdisciplinary approach, combining various geological disciplines: structural geology, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics and geochronology, and, also, multilateral interlaboratory cooperation. The sequence is based on the ezamination of an area of fluvial deposition in south Hampshire and an area of marine, colluvial and aeolian deposition in the Channel Islands. Five main conclusions are proposed: I, the terrace gravels of south Hampshire are entirely of fluvial origin and were deposited by the Pleisto­ cene River Solent. These terraces are of end interglacial age and were formed by the large discharges associated with cooling climates, but before glacio-eustatic effects caused sea level to fall greatly from the inter- glacial level; II, the Hoxnian inter glacial sea level was around 100 ft.
