8 9 Sport climbing is booming

In recent years, climbing has truly become a popular sport, not least because of nume - rous climbing gyms: more and more athletes are attracted by vertical challenges, both indoor and outdoor, and the trend continues. For a very good reason: climbing does not Here is an example from the result list: Juliane Wurm had 4 tops (T) in the semifinal and nee - only train most of our 656 muscles, it challenges the mind, too. In Germany alone, there are more than 350 climbing gyms open to the public. There are 35 million climbers around the world; in Germany alone there are around 500,000 clim - bers. Twenty-five per cent of the one million members of the (DAV) Global Recognition state that they are climbing indoor on a regular basis. The sport also attracts many women. Around 40 per cent of German climbers are female. And that is not surprising: In addition to 3,500 spectators who attended adidas ROCKSTARS in the Porsche-Arena, this sport is not only about strength, but also about body control and athleticism. And it 38,000 people watched the live stream. 413,000 facebook users around the globe were is a mind game, too. reached in the course the event. adidas ROCKSTARS was also well received by TV stations. “We are thrilled about the great feedback we receive from TV editors”, says Axel Burkhardt, Director Global Sports Marketing adidas Outdoor. “ 7,095 transmissions in over 190 coun - Competition climbing tries of which 3,872 were short reports speak for themselves. Official competitions take place in three different disciplines: , bouldering and . Bouldering is also known as maximal strength discipline. The difficulties of boulder “problems” range between boulder 7c to 8a+ and may be compared with single moves of grade 10 or 11 lead routes. In boul - dering competitions, the aim is to master four to five short boulder problems in several rounds (qualification, semifinal, final) with as few attempts as possible. For each boulder the athletes have a time frame of four or five minutes, depending on the respective round.

A boulder consists of six to eight climbing moves on average and has a maximum height of 4.5 metres, which makes it possible to climb without belay ropes. Falls are absorbed by so-called crash pads, i.e. custom-built boulder mats. The climber has to put both hands on marked starting holds and climb from there to the highest hold, the so-called top. The top hold, too, must be visibly held with both hands. The athlete who achieved the most tops with the fewest attempts is the winner of the competition. In case nobody is able to top a boulder problem the so-called bonus hold applies, meaning bonus points for a certain pre-defined zone the climber has to reach on his way to the top. To determine the ranking, the decisive factor is the maximum number of tops combined with the lowest adidas ROCKSTARS is not just a stand-alone IFSC Master event – in the past years it has number of attempts, followed by the number of bonus points and the number of attempts developed into an entire series. There are national adidas ROCKSTARS competitions in needed to reach those bonus holds. 48 5. GORE-TEX ® ///////////////////////////////////////////// BE A ROCKSTAR AMATEUR COMPETITION //////

GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar is a stepping-stone for enthusiastic amateurs aged 16 and over, who would like to compete at least once with the world’s best bouldering athletes. A total of 135 participants (men and women) are permitted to this contest. They compete in a jam session format, which means that they must climb 8 different boulder problems in a random order within a given time frame. The winners of the jam session receive a wildcard for the adidas ROCKSTARS pro competition and enter the semifinal round on Saturday morning. There they compete alongside the top stars of the international boul - dering community for a place in the final.

In addition, the top three men and women of the GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar jam session spend one afternoon in the limelight in their very own final: a “Build your Boulder” con - test. Here the finalists form a team with a top athlete drawn by lot. With the help of clim - bing celebrities like Bernd Zangerl, Beat Kammerlander, Fabian Buhl, Alex Luger and Romain Desgranges, they have to set their own route within one hour. Each finalist must climb all three self-built problems as well as a fourth boulder set by the route setters. In order to claim victory, the finalists need creativity, speed, and self-evaluation, because only by topping their own boulder problem they have a chance to win. The competitor who tops the most boulders with the least number of attempts claims the GORE-TEX® Be a Rockstar crown and will be invited to the adidas ROCKSTARS pro competition in the fol - lowing year.

The two nine-meter-wide boulder walls and the super boulder have been built specifically for this competition. Thus none of the athletes have an advantage in terms of experience. The set-up of the complex climbing walls starts one week prior to the event.

48 53 7. ROUTE SETTERS //////////////////////////////////////

The quality of the routes is vital for a good competition. After all, adidas ROCKSTARS wants to highlight the skills of the international bouldering elite. At the same time, the route setters try to live up to the interests of spectators and the media. That asks for in - stinct feel. Boulders have to be set in a fair way with equal opportunities for all athletes and they should challenge the climbers in any round of competition in a range of clim - bing skills and styles, typically including both power and strength, technique, balance, coordination and dynamic movements, but also less physical skills like tenacity, com - mitment and problem-solving. In the best of cases, only one athlete masters the most difficult problem. But if the boulders are too tough, it could backfire. This is when the 100 years of competition experience of the adidas ROCKSTARS route setting team come into play.

Laurent „Larry“ Laporte (FRA) has more than 20 years of experience in route setting. He can’t really remember how he got into building boulders, but he knows very well why he‘s still passionately doing it: he loves being creative. He enjoys trying the boulder himself, the tension during the competition and the relief afterwards. Laurent has already set five World Championships and various World Cup routes. To the Frenchman each contest is a new challenge. In his opinion the biggest difficulty to set a good route is to play with the rhythm, always searching for new concepts to be able to screw a good show. In his spare time, Larry carves climbing holds, listens to Nirvana and AC/DC or just surfs on the wave of his life.

Reinhard Fichtinger (AUT) , better known as "Reini", has joined adidas ROCKSTARS since Adam Pustelnik (POL) is originally from Poland but feels like he belongs anywhere and its inception.
