Allestito dal 2005 nella Villa Alvarado sul Colle di Covignano, vicino al Santuario delle Grazie, è l’ultima incarnazione espositiva di una ricchissima collezione di arte etnografica riminese, IN come poche ce ne sono in Italia e in Europa. Chiuso al pubblico da anni, COPERTINA è visitabile solo su richiesta, grazie agli sforzi del personale dei Musei Agostino comunali. A ripensarlo dopo tre lustri dall’inaugurazione ci s’intristisce Di Duccio, nel trovarlo così poco accessibile, e, anche quando lo fosse, così povero Putti con rispetto alle sue vaste raccolte racchiuse nei magazzini: più una cornucopie piccola mostra, benché preziosa, che un museo, insomma una brillante Gilberto prefazione, che porta la firma di Marc Augé, a un romanzo che non si Urbinati può più leggere. Anche oggi sarebbe un museo perfetto per una Rimini che accoglie turisti, 22-23 viaggiatori, immigrati da ogni parte del mondo, con straordinarie potenzialità civili e sociali, pedagogiche e poetiche. Il 2020 sarà l’anno Il G.U.M. di Torino e il Tempio di Federico Fellini: non so cosa penserebbe del Museo virtuale che Marco Testa gli dedicheremo; so per certo che un museo etnografico lo troverebbe 25 entusiasta. HIS GROWING UP YEARS BETWEEN 6 AND 13 His mother's unfortunate and prolonged illness forced his father to place his son in the care of his nanny. The nanny's husband was a stonecutter, working in his own father's marble quarry. In 1481, when Michelangelo was six years old, his mother died yet he continued to live with the pair until he was 13 years old. As a child, he was always surrounded by chisels and stone. He joked that this was why he loved to sculpt in marble.

ARTICLE ‘Touch the truth’?: Desiderio da Settignano, Renaissance relief and the body of Christ Alison Wright School of Arts and Social Sciences, University College London From the late nineteenth century, relief sculpture has been taken as a locus classicus for understanding new engagements with spatial and volumetric effects in the art of fifteenth- century Florence, with Ghiberti usually taking the Academy award for the second set of Baptistery doors.1 The art historical field has traditionally been dominated by German scholarship both in artist-centred studies and in the discussion of the so-called ‘malerischens Relief’.2 An alternative tradition, likewise originating in the nineteenth-century, has been claimed by English aesthetics where relief has offered a place of poetic meditation and insight. John Ruskin memorably championed the chromatic possibilities of low relief architectural carving in The Stones of Venice (early 1850s) and in his 1872 essay on Luca della Robbia Walter Pater mused on how ‘resistant’ sculpture could become a vehicle of expression.3 For Adrian Stokes (1934) the very low relief figures by Agostino di Duccio at the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini represented a vital ‘blooming’ of luminous limestone.4 Stokes’ insistence that sculptural values were not reducible to modelling, which he identified

    Antonio Rizzo (Verona 1430 - Venice 1499) Virgin and Child Circa: Second half, 15thcentury Reliefs representing the Virgin and Child are usually associated with the Florentine Renaissance and models by artists such as Ghiberti and Donatello. The present work differs from these by the treatment of its shallow relief, set off against the background, the rounded faces, sharply delineated lips and arched brows. These features are distinctive of a number of sculptures attributed to the enigmatic sculptor Antonio Rizzo. In her extensive monograph on Rizzo, Markham Schulz supposes that he must have been in Florence yet in his review of the monograph Boucher suggests that the artist’s work is distinctly different from Florentine art. Rizzo’s vein of classicism could derive from the Venetian and Pavian schools, which also gave rise to artists such as Agostino di Duccio (1418-1481) with his distinctive linear style and Pietro Lombardo (1430-1515). Rizzo was born in Verona in the 1430s. While little documentation exists about his life, it is known that he was active mainly in Venice between 1465 and 1498. His work includes the two marble statues of Adamand Eveon the further side of the Foscari Arch, opposite the Giants' Staircase, in the courtyard of the Doges' Palace in Venice. He also executed the tombs of Doge Niccolò Tron, in Santa Maria Gloriosa de' Frari; of Doge Antonio Barbarigo, in the church of the Carità (between 1483 and 1493); and of Giovanni Emo, in Santa Maria dei Servi (after 1483). At the end of his life he was forced to escape from Venice due to a financial scandal, an event that probably contributed to the fading of his reputation.

    THE CHOREOGRAPHIC IMAGINATION IN RENAISSANCE ART Olivia Powell Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Olivia Powell All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Choreographic Imagination in Renaissance Art Olivia Powell This dissertation studies the complex relationship between Italian Renaissance art and dance. Interdisciplinary scholarship has hitherto focused on Renaissance dance treatises, which often exhibit parallels with contemporary writings on painting and sculpture. My research goes beyond the textual parallels to focus instead on the mechanisms of figuration in the visual arts, and on the corporeal sensibility of the Renaissance image. I examine the ways in which figural patterns, interactions, and gestures can be understood in terms of choreography. At issue is the nature of figural composition and of the figure itself, the characteristics of the dancing body and the role of that body within the corporeal imagination of the artist. The fundamental thesis is that the Renaissance artist can be considered a choreographer in his own right. Chapter One (From Solo to Chorus) provides a framework for thinking about the artist as choreographer by discussing at length Leon Battista Alberti’s On Painting (1435/36). First, I show that Alberti’s definition of figural composition is essentially choreographic, in that it concerns the formal organization of bodies that move with expressive purpose. Secondly, I analyze Alberti’s emphasis upon the Calumny of Apelles and the Three Graces, themes from Antiquity that express an aesthetic held in tension between the poles of fury and grace.

Finkel Northwestern University A major idea in relationship science is that partners in a close relationship can “sculpt” each other in a manner that helps them align more closely with their ideal, or true, self. This sculpting metaphor is compelling, elegant, and generative, but it also possesses previously unrecognized liabilities, especially in its conceptualization of the ideal self as a sculpture yearning for release from a block of stone that is imprisoning it. Given the powerful role that metaphors play in structuring thought, overreliance on the sculpting metaphor has blinded us to certain questions even as it has sensitized us to others. To develop a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which relationship partners bring out the best or the worst in each other, we must complement the sculpting metaphor with metaphors that direct our attention to questions that it obscures, such as (a) where the ideal self comes from and (b) whether, how much, and how the ideal self changes over time. Dickerson III, Curator and Head of Department, Sculpture and Decorative Arts ohn Russell Pope’s magnificent West Building is more than a temple of paintings. Within the Jsublime galleries, on both the main and ground floors, awaits one of the preeminent sculpture and decorative arts collections in the world, comprised of 4,000 objects created before the mid-1900s — from works of marble and bronze to examples of ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and furniture. Stretching from ancient Greece to the early twenti- eth century, the collection spans an even wider historical range than the West Building’s great paintings. Partic- ularly rich in works from the Italian Renaissance and eighteenth- and nine- teenth-century France, the Gallery’s collection began with Andrew W. Mellon’s founding donations and has expanded through the present century with the transformative arrivals of the distinguished Kaufman collection of American furniture and masterpieces from the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Mellon’s original vision for the Gallery did not include sculpture or decorative arts, however. He loved paint- ings and assumed that any museum he established would be filled entirely with them. It was only during the final years of his life that his outlook toward sculpture changed. As he wrestled with planning the expansive museum he intended to build on the National Mall in Washington, DC, he was led to think more openly about sculpture, paving Fig. 1.     ART HUMANITIES: PRIMARY SOURCE READER Section 4: Michelangelo Art Humanities Primary Source Reading 15 Michelangelo, Selected Poems The passages that follow attest to Michelangelo as a personification of what we now call a “Renaissance Man.” Though he is best known for his sculpture, painting, and architecture, Michelangelo was also a prolific poet, composing over three hundred pieces during his lifetime, sometimes even jotting down lines of verse in the margins of his drawings. Though an edition of 105 of his poems was abortively prepared between 1542 and 1546, the first printed version of his written work appeared in 1623 in a volume edited by his grandnephew Michelangelo the Younger. The latter Michelangelo drew from the edition prepared earlier, as well as family manuscripts, while altering the nature of the poems by completing some,and changing the language and content of others to conform with Counter-Reformation ideas about faith and love. This was the only available version of the artist’s poetry until 1863, and, therefore, it shaped scholarly understanding of Michelangelo through the first part of the 19th century. The artist dealt with such broad themes as love and death, and, as in the selections here, the nature of artistic creativity. At the same time, the following poems provide us with a type of written self-portrait, which may be read alongside the images he created of himself in the guise of St. Bartholomew in the Last Judgment, and the figure of Nicodemus in the Florence Pietà. As the following examples suggest, Michelangelo’s insights on himself were frequently in strong contrast to Vasari’s effusively laudatory commentary on the artist’s life and works.

BY Joshua Kamins ABSTRACT This thesis argues that Michelangelo employed the grammar of the Cathedral and Prophet program in the making of his David with particular reference to Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise, Donatello’s Jeremiah, Nanni di Banco’s Isaiah, and Assumption of the Virgin above the Porta della Mandorla. Emphasizing Christological prophecy as the lynchpin of the overall sculptural program, it likewise applies humanist and Christian exegesis in order to reposition the David into its intended religious context. Raised on top of the Duomo, the David would have embodied the ancestral bloodline—emanating from the Tree of Jesse, carried through the womb of the Virgin Mary, and culminating in the incarnation of Christ. The incarnation—prophesied by Jeremiah, Isaiah, and the Minor Prophets—fulfills the thematic program—both in form and in hermeneutics—of the sculptural ensemble gracing the cathedral and baptistery architectural complex. The tree-stump is considered crucial to the istoria of Michelangelo’s David, akin to the importance of Goliath’s head in previous depictions of David; here it symbolizes the genealogy of Christ as derivative of the Davidic bloodline. The richest and most famous of Romanian monastery churches endowed by the then reigning prince Negru-Voda is located in the southern plains at Curtea de Arges and was built in the first quarter of the sixteenth century (1512–1517) by Master Manole (Figure 15.1). As he and his team were building the church, so the story goes, it collapsed time and again such that they began to despair and pray, and in response to these prayers Manole had a vision: God advising him that if he wished to bring his work to completion he must immure the first woman who would arrive that day at the site, that is, build her into the church wall. Only thus would the building stand. All workers had their wives bring them their midday meal and knowing the danger facing the one who would arrive first they dis- loyally let them know ahead of time not to come that day; all but Manole. Knowing that his beautiful, young and much beloved wife was about to arrive carrying his meal Manole prayed and prayed that something would happen to obstruct her way and that she would not reach the building site that day — but whatever came in her way, she triumphed over it and driven by her love for her husband overcame all obstacles, thus walking into her sacrifice, the place of her martyrdom.
