Everything about J. Julian Christopher’s world- premiere drama Animals Commit Suicide for “HYSTERICAL. FUNNY. DECIDEDLY SILLY.” First Floor Theater feels blatantly manufactured –backstage to be a succès de scandale—trying to provoke outraged responses to generate publicity. PRESENTS Consider this button-pushing checklist: The play focuses on a “bug catcher”—a gay guy PRODUCTION OF deliberately out to contract HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Director Hutch Pimentel’s stag- ing also features nudity with simulated sex and drug use. These things wouldn’t be “bad” in of them- selves if J. Julian Christopher and First Floor Theater had skillfully put them all to use for solid dramatic purposes. But Animals Commit Suicide suffers from too many lapses in cred- ibility and questionable character motivations. Look at the well-educated 29-year-old an- tihero Chance Stevens (Nik Kourtis). For one thing, Chance’s six-figure salary as a corporate journalist isn’t realistic. It’s also hard to swal- low how Chance’s mother’s death from AIDS- related causes is what could be psychologically pushing him to seroconvert. Other head-scratchers are why Chance is romantically pursuing (and lying to) the HIV- positive baker Ethan Sweet (Brian Keys) to be “the giver” for the virus. That’s because Chance also has risky drugged-up sex with the HIV- positive slacker Sebastian (Michael Reyes). Ethan’s character turnaround at the end comes out of nowhere, while Sebastian’s boasting of becoming HIV-positive to mooch off of state support systems only hands ammunition to those calling for cuts to organizations assist- ing those living with HIV. Chance’s HIV obsession is also frustrating because new antiviral drugs to help keep HIV- negative people from contracting the virus are mentioned in the play—especially by the petu- lant lesbian clinic worker (Ashley J. Hicks) who wears a badge from the Howard Brown Health Center. (This organization really should con- sider sending a cease-and-desist letter to First Floor Theater to prevent its logo from being used.) The Keith Haring Foundation should also be up in arms since Animals Commit Suicide set designer William Boles cribs what looks like two BY PETER GWINN & BOBBY MORT street murals by the famed gay artist who died from AIDS-related causes in 1990. Photo by Ross Forman this coin-saver. The point behind the Prius is to save you money at the pump, and that it does wonderfully. As for the rest of the car… Acceleration can still be tricky, and that’s al- ways a drag for a brand new car. When I first test drove the Prius over a decade ago, just a mere 3-degree incline had the engine strug- gling. It truly sounded like the car was stuck in second gear and could not get out. It was a rough ride, to be sure, and yet I saved so much money on gas, I could buy a triple-Venti-some- thing-full-of-sugar at a local coffee shop. The Prius’ engine performs much better these days and really was nice and not a distraction—and I still had enough money for more processed sugar. The takeaway here is that all you engine freaks should pass on this one, because the positive impression of the Prius is left in your wallet, not in your heart rate. Inside, there is plenty of room for every- thing. Well, not everything, but for you and three friends and just enough luggage for the weekend. Not that I ever packed the car to the gills, but groceries, boxes of computer equipment and other miscellaneous household items, to include a nice-sized microwave oven, got in and out of the 2015 Prius with ease, though my muscle friends did prove to be a little on the lazy side. Toyota will tell you that they can promise you a great car but they can’t promise you great friends. Roger that. One feature I just love on the 2015 Prius is how all you have to do to put the car in park is press a button. We all know the order of the gears; P-R-N-D. If you are parking, you have to go through Reverse to get the Park, and if you are starting, you have to get through Reverse to get to Drive and not get stuck in the wrong gear. We’ve all hit the gas only to discover we are in the wrong gear as we come out of dead stop. With the push of a button for Park, that potential goof-up is avoided. For me, that alone is worth buying the Prius. And I may have been a bit harsh calling the 2015 Prius a “dullard.” Your car is only as excit- ing as you are, and I had a great time in it. This car doesn’t scream “gay,” but it doesn’t scream “cray gay,” either—and that’s good. In fact, some people actually think a Prius can be quite the sporty vehicle. My friend and fellow car genius Jason Lancaster has some thoughts on how to spiff up a Prius and some suggestions on how to make my “dullard” into a real “dude” that’s not a total “dud.” (See what an English undergraduate degree can do for your ability to inject alliteration into gay talk about cars?) As 2015 draws to a close, the Prius is a car worth checking out so long as you just want practicality … because as we approach the dawn of a new presidency here in the colonies (as the Brits like to call the United States), practicality may be the only thing that saves 36 Nov. 25, 2015 WINDY CITY TIMES

Tab Hunter Confidential

There have always been movie stars who at- tained that rarefied status simply because they were drop-dead gorgeous. (And isn’t objecti- fication the primal reason why we go to the movies—or at least, used to)? The list of raving beauties who have lit up the silver screen without much talent is long: Hedy Lamarr, Raquel Welch and Sharon Tate come to mind immediately. So does Tab Hunter, the epitome of American hunkitude circa 1950s. Blonde, blue-eyed, square-jawed and ripped in an era when that was the exception rather than the rule, the statuesque Hunter was the polite, sweet-natured boy next door who made all the girls swoon—and (secretly, in the dark) a lot of the boys, too. Hunter shared that secret for he, too, was gay and in ’s entertaining and mostly hagiographic documentary portrait, Tab Hunter Confidential, the onetime heartthrob, now 84, reflects on his decades-long closeted thony Perkins. WINDY CITY TIMES 2015 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE week one of two

Art-felt Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MCAChicago.org) always seems to have some of the most innovative and fun gift ideas. Available online as well as in its brick-and-mortar store, the museum has items such as the minimalist Block Perpetual Calendar, a chainmail dishcloth, a motorcycle helmet champagne bucket and (my favorite) the Yoga Joes. Yo, Joe!

‘Sound’ and the fury St. Martin’s Press (StMartins.com) is offering several intriguing books that make excellent gifts. Among them is Downton Abbey-A Celebration: The Official Companion to All Six Seasons ($29.99), which will probably fly off the shelves with the series winding down; Before Marilyn: The Blue Book Modeling Years ($35), which chronicles Marilyn Monroe’s early modeling career; and The Sound of Music Story ($28.99), being issued during the film’s 50th anniversary.

A sporting chance Steiner Sports (SteinerSports.com) should be catnip for any sports fan, and there’s an exhaustive list of things. For example, a search of Chicago Cubs items yielded everything from a Derrek Lee-autographed hat to a Jake Arrieta plaque with game-used dirt from Wrigley Field. If only we could bid on a date with Arrieta at this site...

Brew colors Start your day in an LGBTA-supportive way. Rainbow Brew Coffee ($13; RainbowBrew.com) comes in a variety of flavors, including Yuletide Gay, Queen Bean (which has touches of black pepper, red curry, gra- ham cracker and nutmeg), Bi the Cup, Str8 Up, Blue State Blend and Lipstick & Flannel, among others.

Reve(RED) (RED) (RED.org) offers a vari- ety of items to help in the fight against global HIV/AIDS. And they don’t break the bank: Ten- nis enthusiasts can purchase a $3 racquet dampener, but there’s something to appeal to just about everyone, including smart cases, a bottletop purse, notebooks, T-shirts and even a Oral majority (GRETSCH)RED Bono “Signature” With technology being a part of every aspect of our lives, it only Model Guitar—which costs a tad makes sense that dental care is getting into the game. Wine and dandy You’ll make an impression as a party host(ess) with Overstock’s Bamboo and Slate Wine Tasting Flight Board with ‘WINE’ Engraved Glasses ($59.39; Overstock.com). Each flight features a natural bamboo serving board with a numbered slate insert where preferred wines can be easily listed and marked. Bottoms up!

Outside the box Bentology’s Portion Perfect bento box ($19.99; Bentology.net) helps those who are counting calories and making sure they’re eating correctly—especially after the stomach-filling holidays. The Bento system comes with five eco-friendly com- partments precisely portioned for a healthy meal that includes lean proteins, whole grains, vegetables, fruits and healthy fats. This could be for the person who seemingly has everything—and has contemplated something of this nature. WINDY CITY TIMES Nov. 25, 2015 39

Naked ambition In order to get more people reading, the San Diego-based Multicultural LGBT Literary Foundation has launched its 2016 calendar and its #ReadNaked campaign. The ReadNaked 2016 calendar ($19.95; http://www.sdliteraryfounda- tion.org/readnaked) is unique because it has specifically enlisted openly gay and bisexual male models of color such as Rodiney Santiago, Andrew Christian Model Arad Winwin, choreographer/model Wiko Ezra, Andrew Christian Model Cheddy O and adult-film star Scotty Marx, along with several studs from throughout Southern California.

Going for a spin The CR8016 Messenger Turntable ($89.99; AlwaysFits.com) capitalizes on the comeback of vinyl with a classic shoulder bag that transforms into a turntable. Equipped to play all three speeds of records and outfitted with an auxiliary input, the turntable provides various music-listening options. Other fea- tures include a diamond stylus needle, a dynamic full-range speaker and pitch control. Pitch, please!

KOLD is pretty cool.

Tea time numi Organic Tea (NumiTea.com)—known for organic, non-GMO and Fair Trade Certified teas and teasans (plants that are steeped like tea)—has introduced its new 2015 gift items: Tea by Mood and Organic Tea Flight. I’ve tried Numi for a few years, and have always been impressed. Tea by Mood is especially intriguing, with 40 bags that aim to inspire, energize and focus, among other things.
