C Ontroversial Hip-Hop Artist Lupe Fiasco Controversial hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco Lupe is very involved in the community, though he doesn’t believe in voting. He believes that people need to get involved in the state level of No Failure in this things and not think that voting for the president automatically gets things done. He, as seen below, is involved in the Occupy Wall Street. He prefers people questioning authority because of his anti-establishment mental- Fiasco ity. Which led Fiasco into trouble with his label, Atlantic Records, over his highly anticipated album “L.A.S.E.R.S.(Love Always Shines Everytime Re- NICHOLAS SPRINGER member to Smile)”. Lupe originally finished the album ahead of time and was awaiting a release date from the label. That was stalled because Atlantic Wasalu Muhammad Jaco (born February 16, 1982), better known by felt that the album didn’t have enough “commercial tracks” and wouldn’t his stage name Lupe Fiasco, is an American rapper, record producer, and sell. entrepreneur. He rose to fame in 2006 following the success of his debut album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor. He also performs as the frontman of rock band Japanese Cartoon under his real name. As an entrepreneur, Fi- asco is the chief executive officer of 1st and 15th Entertainment. His mother gave him the nickname Lu, and “Lupe” was the nickname he got from a friend in high school. He took the name “Fiasco” from a group called the “The Firm’s” song, “Firm Fiasco”. He liked the way Fiasco looked, and knew that it meant disaster but didn’t realize that he should call others a fiasco not himself. “I didn’t realize that the person named Fi- asco would be the disaster, and that you should be calling other MCs fias- cos—not yourself...it kind of humbled me in a sense. It taught me like, ‘Yo, stop rushing, or you’re going to have some fiascos”, Lupe said. The album was therefore pushed back by 6 months, and forced fans to sign an online petition wanting Atlantic Records to release the album. Lupe Fiasco, being a fan ofconscious music, was quick to tell people he didn’t like the album because the music on it wasn’t him, it was what the record wanted not what he wanted. As a result he came out with a Thanksgiving day mixtape called “Friend of the people”, in 2011 to make up to his fans. On numerous occassions he’s threatened to retire, with his last album being “LupE.N.D”, because he despises the way the industry works. And many people still contemplate when it may happen. 2 3 As for Fiasco, he has no plans on hanging up the mic just yet. Although many see his music as boring because he rather focus on the lyrics than on the instrumen- tals he has no worries that some- one somewhere will understand. ”What I’ve learned is not to take anybody’s advice. If you rely solely on your fans, it sets you up for the downfall on the industry side and if you rely on what your label is saying, it will disconnect you from your fans.” Lupe said. And as you can imagine he’s not taking any- one’s advice to “dumb down” the music or to be more “radio friendly”, to put it nicely. He’s here to stay and he’s here to fight. Here to have people question everyone’s motive and never take everything as it is. He’s not your normal musician nowadays, nor is he your normal person. He prides himself on being different not only within the music, but daily. In other words, he takes on the issues one microphone at a time. LupE.N.D 4.

In Defense of Rap Music: Not Just Beats, Rhymes, Sex, and Violence THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Joesell Radford, BA Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University 2011 Thesis Committee: Professor Beverly Gordon, Advisor Professor Adrienne Dixson Copyrighted by Crystal Joesell Radford 2011 Abstract This study critically analyzes rap through an interdisciplinary framework. The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998).

PROLOGUE Sidelines of chairs neatly divide the center field and a large stage stands erect. At its center, there is a stately podium flanked by disciplined men wearing the militaristic suits of the Fruit of Islam, a visible security squad. This is Ford Field, usually known for housing the Detroit Lions football team, but on this occasion it plays host to a different gathering and sentiment. The seats are mostly full, both on the floor and in the stands, but if you look closely, you’ll find that this audience isn’t the standard sporting fare: the men are in smart suits, the women dress equally so, in long white dresses, gloves, and headscarves.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Rice and Rap: Hip Hop Music, Black/Asian American Racialization, and the Role of the U.S. Multicultural Neoliberal State A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Asian American Studies by Michelle Mihwa Chang 2015 © Copyright by Michelle Mihwa Chang 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Rice and Rap: Hip Hop Music, Black/Asian American Racialization, and the Role of the U.S. Multicultural Neoliberal State by Michelle Mihwa Chang Master of Arts in Asian American Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Kyungwon Hong, Chair This paper explores Black and Asian American racialization within the multicultural neoliberal state. Looking at Los Angeles in the 1980s and early 1990s, I examine the rise of multiculturalism and neoliberalism within the US as it parallels the rise and commercialization of hip hop music sub-genre, gangsta rap. By examining the multicultural neoliberal state, and its consequences for communities of color, I look at the ways in which Black/Asian American racialization occurred through the tropes of the gangster and the model minority, respectively. Moreover, I contend that the multicultural neoliberal state relied on popular constructions of Asianness and Blackness in order to maintain whiteness, conceal state-violences, and define its national borders of inclusion and exclusion, and gangsta rap provided an ideal space for this. My project also explores progressive rap and the ways in which it ii manifested from the same conditions of gangsta rap, yet managed to produce itself differently. Lastly, I conclude with a close examination of the hip hop duo Blue Scholars (featuring Asian American emcee Prometheus Brown) and their song, “Morning of America,” which addresses and challenges this particular moment of the 1980s through the lens of the colonized subject and racialized other.

Songwriter | Soulful Indie Artist | Performer | Educator Hailing from Deep Ellum, Grades Of Absolute Truth (Justin Griffith) is a soulful indie hip hop artist who has been writing and creating a unique brand since 2005. The elementary school teacher by day, who released his first album absolute truth in 2006, embeds conscious lyricism, self-awareness, and struggle into every performance. With 6 independent tours and over 600 performances under his belt, he has shared the stage with B.o.B, Lupe Fiasco, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Everlast, Bubba Sparxxx, Hopsin, Wax, Mac Lethal, Rittz, Mod Sun, Shwayze, Paul Wall, Tone Loc, Jon Connor, King Los, Snow Tha Product, Sole, DJ Pain 1, Mr. Dibbs, Ceschi, Ecid, Bleubird, Abstract Rude, Mickey Avalon, Crazy Town, (hed) P.E., Leon Bridges, Cody Cannon of Whiskey Myers, The Revivalists, Sisqo, SoMo, and more. Referred to as the illegitimate child of promiscuous genres, GOAT pulls inspiration from Brother Ali, Cee-Lo, Incubus, Counting Crows, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, showing true diversity in his blend of music. Expect the depth of an introverted poet, the precision of a perfectionist, and the relevance of a leader with an emphasis on concept projects. _______________________________________________________________________________________ "GOAT (Grades Of Absolute Truth) encapsulates the definition of diversity in music. One can describe his sound as southern, hovering somewhere in middle of a clash of rock, blues, and hip hop." -Poor Vida At 8 years old, the nickname "GOAT" was given to Justin by a childhood friend after watching Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. During a scene in medieval times, Bill says "how 'bout that gnarly ole' goat dude." Starting as a joke, it eventually stuck to Justin and never went away.

  • Love Stories: a Narrative Look at How Couples Jointly Construct Love in Romantic Relationships
ABSTRACT LOVE STORIES: A NARRATIVE LOOK AT HOW COUPLES JOINTLY CONSTRUCT LOVE IN ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS The goal of this thesis was to understand how love in romantic relationships is constituted through the stories couples tell. Two research questions were asked: How do couples co-construct love? And, how do couples narratively define love? The stories were collected through open-ended dyadic interviews with 15 heterosexual couples. Couples ranged in ages and relationship length and some were dating, some were married. Narrative theory was used to understand how couples make sense of their love through the stories they told together.
