Pussy have become a symbol of the resurrection and everlasting life. There is a legend of the pussy willow. A legend or a fable is a story that doesn’t pretend to be historical, but simply teaches a lesson. The events sur- rounding the suffering and death of Christ gave rise to many legends. A Polish legend says that on Palm Sunday Jesus visited a forest, bare of any foliage because of the harsh winter temperatures. No buds, flow- ers, ground cover sprigs. The crocus could not even poke through the icey crags. The whole forest was a gloomy gray, the animals wistful, motionless, the birds, silent. The 365-Day-Count-Down on March 22 featured the Justine Ward music many of our Sisters were taught and then used for teaching their students how to read mu- sic. The POSTs are very limited so here’s a little more about Justine Ward. Justine Bayard Cutting was born on August 7, 1879. In 1901 she married George Cabot Ward. She died on November 27, 1975 in Washington, DC. Justine was in the process of converting to the Catholic Faith when she read the Motu Propio of the pope and felt personally touched by it. With the help of God’s grace and through assistance of wise and holy in- structors, she developed a pedagogy for teaching music to children that would prepare them to develop numerous musical abilities such as ear training, sight singing, composi- tion, transcription, intonation, rhythm, conducting and more, all for the purpose of ade- quately and beautifully singing sacred music. Her method was used to promote the use of liturgical chant by teaching children vocal music reading skills so that they would be able to sing the vast repertoire of sa- cred music which was part of the Roman ’s tradition. The title of her text is “That All May Sing.” Several of her books are contained in our archives and are delightful to look at.
