  • The Cistercian Abbey of Coupar Angus, C.1164-C.1560
1 The Cistercian Abbey of Coupar Angus, c.1164-c.1560 Victoria Anne Hodgson University of Stirling Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2016 2 3 Abstract This thesis is an examination of the Cistercian abbey of Coupar Angus, c.1164-c.1560, and its place within Scottish society. The subject of medieval monasticism in Scotland has received limited scholarly attention and Coupar itself has been almost completely overlooked, despite the fact that the abbey possesses one of the best sets of surviving sources of any Scottish religious house. Moreover, in recent years, long-held assumptions about the Cistercian Order have been challenged and the validity of Order-wide generalisations disputed. Historians have therefore highlighted the importance of dedicated studies of individual houses and the need to incorporate the experience of abbeys on the European ‘periphery’ into the overall narrative. This thesis considers the history of Coupar in terms of three broadly thematic areas. The first chapter focuses on the nature of the abbey’s landholding and prosecution of resources, as well as the monks’ burghal presence and involvement in trade. The second investigates the ways in which the house interacted with wider society outside of its role as landowner, particularly within the context of lay piety, patronage and its intercessory function. The final chapter is concerned with a more strictly ecclesiastical setting and is divided into two parts. The first considers the abbey within the configuration of the Scottish secular church with regards to parishes, churches and chapels. The second investigates the strength of Cistercian networks, both domestic and international.

  • Bute House the Offi Cial Residence of the First Minister of Scotland
Bute House The offi cial residence of the First Minister of Scotland Bute House 20pp brochure 02.indd 1 17/07/2017 08:53 Welcome to Bute House ince I became First Minister, I have welcomed thousands of people to Bute House. As the official residence of the First Minister of Scotland, it is here that I host official guests from this country and overseas on behalf of the nation. Bute House is also the meeting place of the Scottish Cabinet and the venue for official functions including meetings, receptions, lunches and dinners. Within these walls, I get to bring together people from all walks of life through meetings with business leaders, public service employees and the voluntary sector, and receptions to celebrate all aspects of Scottish society and success. Every Christmas, I even get to welcome youngsters from around the country for an annual children’s party. All year round Bute House performs a dual role of both residence and place of work for the First Minister. All four of my predecessors lived here too, and their portraits line the wall of the staircase leading to the Cabinet Room. Before the Scottish Parliament was reconvened in 1999, Bute House was home to eight different Secretaries of State for Scotland from 1970 onwards. Many of the key conversations and decisions in recent Scottish political history have taken place within these walls. Even without its modern role, however, Bute House would be of significant historic interest. It was built in the late 18th century, and is at the heart of one of the great masterpieces of Georgian architecture – the north side of Robert Adam’s Charlotte Square.

  • Highland Bird News No 119
The Scottish Ornithologists’ Club Scotland’s Bird Club Highland Bird News No 119 January 2013 Editorial Contents May I take this opportunity to wish you a happy and healthy New Year, with lots of good birds/birding too! Editorial p1 The unseasonal temperatures seem to be causing confusion amongst Annual Dalry Bird Festival some of our birds. I heard Oystercatchers calling over Inverness around p2 midnight on 6th January and on the 7th, I noticed Blue Tits collecting feathers, presumably for nest building? A Field Trip to the Black Isle p2 Inverness seems to have largely missed out on Waxwings so far this winter, though there are still a few about. From the region, the largest Some Recent and not so flock I have heard of was of 1000 birds, seen at Kyleakin by people on Recent Sightings p3 their way to attend the Skye Conference on 17 November. Indoor Meetings & Field I have had up to 3 males and a female Brambling coming daily to my Trips p3 feeders since before Christmas. They were joined on 3rd January by two Waxwings which demolished an apple put out for the Blackbirds and Useful Contacts p4 also by a male Blackcap, the first I have seen in the garden at this time of year. Websites and Blogs about Birds and Birding in The mini conference held at the Gaelic College on Skye on Saturday 17 Highland p4 November 2012 was a great success. A write up will appear in a future issue of Scottish Birds. Thanks are due in large measure to Bob 2010 Highland Bird Report McMillan for promoting the idea, choosing the venue, inviting speakers p5 and for making the arrangements which together, make a bird conference so enjoyable.

Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH CULROSS ABBEY SYNOPSIS The monument comprises the ruins of the former Cistercian abbey of St Mary and St Serf at Culross. It was founded in the 13th century by Malcolm, Earl of Fife, as a daughter-house of Kinloss. After the Protestant Reformation (1560), the east end of the monastic church became the parish church of Culross. The structures in care comprise the south wall of the nave, the cloister garth, the surviving southern half of the cloister's west range and the lower parts of the east and south ranges. The 17th-century manse now occupies the NW corner of the cloister, with the garth forming the manse’s garden. The east end of the abbey church is not in state care but continues in use as a parish church. CHARACTER OF THE MONUMENT Historical Overview: 6th century - tradition holds that Culross is the site of an early Christian community headed by St Serf, and of which St Kentigern was a member.

  • Dun Telve and Dun Troddan (Glenelg)
Property in Care (PIC) ID: PIC330 & PIC331 Designations: Scheduled Monument (SM90152) Taken into State care: 1885 (Guardianship) Last reviewed: 2004 HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT SCOTLAND STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE DUN TELVE AND DUN TRODDAN (GLENELG) We continually revise our Statements of Significance, so they may vary in length, format and level of detail. While every effort is made to keep them up to date, they should not be considered a definitive or final assessment of our properties. Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH DUN TELVE AND DUN TRODDAN BRIEF DESCRIPTION The monument comprises two broch towers that are sited less than 500m apart in the valley of Gleann Beag in Glenelg. Dun Telve stands near the river and about one third of its wall still stands to a height of over 10m. Dun Troddan is set on a terrace in the hillside a little further up the Glen. About one third of the wall survives to a height of 7.6m and it is very like its neighbour in structural detail. Each is accessible by a short walk from the road. CHARACTER OF THE MONUMENT Historical Overview • There is a rich and fascinating antiquarian and later history associated with the discovery and interpretation of broch towers/complex roundhouses as a whole. Early antiquarian drawings exist for these monuments: Alexander Gordon, about 1720; Pennant in 1772. These monuments attracted attention from an early date because they are so well-preserved.
