Grade. A Distance 10 miles /16km Climbing 3280 ft / 1000m

We commence our walk today with a visit to Aira Force on the northern shore of . The waterfall is perhaps the most famous and one of the most frequently visited in the , with Wordsworth and Wainwright both writing about its splendour in their different ways. Aira Beck suddenly plunges dramatically for about 65 feet through an overhead bridge and over the rocks. The beck has its source high on the slopes of which we visit later From the falls, we continue to Dockray and then High Row before following Groove Beck onto Common. The route now takes us to the summit of (2871ft / 857m), the highest point of the walk today. From here, we head to Watson’s Dodd (2589ft / 789m) and then on to Stybarrow Dodd (2766ft / 843m) before descending to Whitestones and the airy viewpoint of Glencoyne Head. A steep descent down the ridge ensues until we arrive at Nick Head. Now we traverse to the rocky summit of Sheffield Pike (2215ft / 675m) with, hopefully, grand views looking out over Ullswater. It’s all downhill from here to Glenridding, refreshments and the coaches.

Leaving the coaches at Aira Force we start climbing up the side of the falls themselves and continue on to Dockray. From here we continue to climb up to Common and Swineside Knott. We then turn towards Brown Hills and continue around Glencoyne Head. Once round this turn we make our final climb up to Sheffield Pike, which at 2215ft/675m, is the highest point of the walk. We then descend down to before ascending a short way up to Glenridding Dodd (fingers crossed for fine views here). From here we descend by Mossdale Beck to Stybarrow Crag where we join Ullswater for the short stroll back to Glenridding. . Heughscar Hill with Chris Cook Grade B Distance 9½ miles / 15.3km Climbing1000ft / 305m (undulating)
