Volume XXV No. 15 Hometown Newspaper for Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Glen Head, Glenwood, Locust Valley and Brookville Week of 12/17/15 75C “The Giving Tree” returns to The Guardian Angel Family Boutique The Guardian Angel of Sea Cliff announces its third annual “Giving Tree” event. The huge success of “The Giving Tree”, bringing so much joy and happiness to so many needy families has made it an annual event. This “Miracle on 34th Street” is located in Sea Cliff at the non-profit Guardian Angel Family Boutique, at 329 Glen Cove Avenue in Sea Cliff (between Littleworth and Lafayette Avenues). Choose a card from “The Giving Tree” and help make a child’s holiday dream come true! Many of the children of families who have fallen on economic hard times won’t be receiving any gifts this holiday season. “The Giving Tree” has cards filled out by these children listing a small gift they would like to receive under their tree. In the spirit of the season, won’t you stop in and choose one card with a child’s name and buy that gift. This is your chance to be a Guardian Angel to a needy child. It may be one extra gift for you to buy, but it may be the only gift that child will receive this holiday season. Imagine the joy on that child’s face when he/ she opens it!! The Guardian Angel volunteers will be available to help you pick out a local family that would be blessed by your caring and loving gift for their child. While you’re there, be sure to see the festive holiday clothing, some new, others gently used for all ages of children and women. With the cold weather soon upon us, you will also find lots of warm jackets, coats, mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and boots, all at very reasonable prices. Bedding, linens, furniture and lots of baby items can also be found. This holiday boutique is sure to be a one-stop crowd pleaser for all City of Glen Cove Inauguration Ceremonies Set for January 1 at 12 noon your winter and holidays needs. During the second-grade lesson, which was taught by STEM teacher Jessica Cialeo, students learned that computers and electronic devices do not have a brain and cannot think for themselves. Therefore, people called computer scientists need to "write" directions for the devices so they can perform tasks. The children were then introduced to coding and given guided practice using Code.org and the iPad applications Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur. The students thoroughly enjoyed using the apps to create block coding, which allowed them to move BB8, a Star Wars: The Force Awakens character on their iPad screens. Cialeo’s lesson was coordinated as part of Computer Science Education Week and the Hour of Code, which is a global movement that reaches tens of millions of students in more than 180 countries. Deasy Principal Ken Craft and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Dr. Michael Israel attended the lesson and assisted the children in their assignment. Happy Holidays! To all our Glen Cove Community, I always love the holidays! It’s such a special time for families, friends and neighbors to celebrate the wonders of the season. It is an opportunity to worship, to give thanks, and to help those who are less fortunate. A time to share a meal, share a story, and stop to remember the importance of being together. As my family and I gather once again for our annual holiday celebration, I would like to thank all of you for your support. It means so much to me. As each new year begins, I am increasingly grateful to you for investing your trust and confidence in me as your Supervising City Court Judge. In the twenty seven years since I first came on board as Associate Judge, I have consistently strived to rise to the challenges of the court with fairness and integrity. Whenever you spot me around town – at City Hall, at the Senior Center, at the National Night Out Against Crime or enjoying the music at our downtown concert series – please be sure to say hello. You, our citizens, are what make this city a wonderful place to live and work. I look forward to serving another year as your Glen Cove Supervising City Court Judge.
