Cape Town authorities have confirmed the evacuation of residents from Devil’s Peak Estate and Vredehoek areas near Cape Town’s central business district (CBD) on April 19 due to the spread of the wildfire around Table Mountain to Tafelberg Road. Students have also been evacuated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) Campus. Authorities confirm that eight structures, including four buildings, at the UCT campus have been damaged in the fire. Sections of the M3 roadway have been closed. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway suspended its services on April 19. According to an official notice by the Western Cape government, the South African National Defense Forces (SANDF) helicopters have been placed on standby for assistance with the ongoing wildfire on Table Mountain National Park. Authorities have announced that SANDF helicopters will be deployed as soon as weather permits citing strong wind speeds. Meanwhile, authorities confirmed the arrest of one out of three arsonists suspected of triggering the wildfires. Security forces were alerted to the alleged arsonists through tips from residents.
