Photo credit: NASA/Frank Michaux NASA’s mobile launcher, atop crawler-transporter 2, traveled from Launch Pad 39B to the Vehicle Assembly Building at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, on Sept. 7, 2018. Arriving late in the afternoon, the mobile launcher stopped at the entrance to the VAB. Early the next day, Sept. 8, engineers and technicians rotated and extended the crew access arm near the top of the mobile launcher tower. Then the mobile launcher was moved inside High Bay 3, where it will spend about seven months undergoing verification and validation testing with the 10 levels of new work platforms, ensuring that it can provide support to the agency’s Space Launch System (SLS). IG-11-024 AUGUST 4, 2011 OVERVIEW NASA INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES: ASSESSMENT OF DATA USED TO MANAGE REAL PROPERTY ASSETS The Issue NASA’s real property holdings include approximately 5,000 buildings and structures such as wind tunnels, laboratories, launch pads, and test stands. In total, the assets occupy 44 million square feet and represent more than $26.4 billion in current replacement value.1 However, 80 percent of NASA’s facilities are 40 or more years old and many are in degraded condition. Moreover, NASA is dealing with the challenge of its aging infrastructure at a time of large and growing budget deficits that are straining the resources of all Federal agencies. As discretionary funding continues to decline, NASA will be required to make more prudent decisions regarding its infrastructure. Expedition 321 Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Self-Guided Field Trip Facilitator’s Guide BEFORE YOU ARRIVE: Spend some time pre-teaching the history and science concepts for the exhibits you will be visiting. More information is available at www.nasa.gov (click on the “For Educators” tab) and www.kennedyspacecenter.com (click on the “Experience” tab). Make copies of the Expedition 321 Logbook for your students and chaperones. For a bifold booklet, print out the PDF file, make 2-sided copies (invert every other original when collating) and staple in the centerfold (set stapler to 5-1/2 inches). Assign students to teams and team positions. Ideally, there should be four students to a team; two or three teams can easily share one chaperone. Decide which activities you are going to explore. There are 20 tasks in the Expedition 321 Logbook, but it is unlikely that students will be able to complete all of these in a single day. WHEN YOU ARRIVE: If coming by bus, you will be dropped off and picked up in Parking Lot 4 near the main entrance. If coming by car, pay a parking fee for each vehicle. You may pick up your tickets at the Will Call / Group Sales window near the main gate. Have your reservation number as well as any required tax-exempt certificates. There will be a security check of your bags. No hard-sided coolers are permitted inside the complex. For guests requiring special assistance, wheelchairs are available for rent at Information Central. Fundamental upgrades to the interplanetary supply chain framework such as process groups, nested elements, and cargo sharing, enabled SpaceNet to model an integrated set of missions as a campaign. The capabilities and uses of SpaceNet are demonstrated by a step-by-step modeling and simulation of a lunar campaign. I. Introduction HE term “supply chain” has traditionally been used to refer to terrestrial logistics and the flow of commodities Tin and out of manufacturing facilities, warehouses, and retail stores. Rather than focusing on local interests, optimizing the entire supply chain can reduce costs by using resources and performing operations as efficiently as possible. There is an increasing realization that future space missions, such as the buildup and sustainment of a lunar outpost, should not be treated as isolated missions but rather as an integrated supply chain. Supply chain management at the interplanetary level will maximize scientific return, minimize transportation costs, and reduce risk through increased system availability and robustness to failures.1,2 SpaceNet is a model with a graphical user interface (GUI) that allows a user to build, simulate, and evaluate exploration missions from a logistics perspective.3 The goal of SpaceNet is to provide mission planners, logisticians, and system engineers with a software tool that focuses on what cargo is needed to support future space missions, when it is required, and how propulsive vehicles can be used to deliver that cargo. -

STP’s predecessor, the Space Experiments Support Program (SESP), launched its first mission in June of 1967; it used a Thor Burner II to launch an Army and a Navy satellite carrying geodesy and aurora experiments. The SESP was renamed to the Space Test Program in July 1971, and has flown over 568 experiments on over 251 missions to date. Today the STP is managed under the Air Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) Advanced Systems and Development Directorate (SMC/AD), and continues to provide access to space for DoD-sponsored research and development missions. It relies heavily on small satellites, small launch vehicles, and innovative approaches to space access to perform its mission. The 3 ISS Science Corner first one involves the External Relations Office taking a fresh look at how 4 Orion sets the stage in 2013 they communicate about the International Space Station on NASA TV. They for Exploration Flight Test-1 determined they could more effectively and efficiently communicate by morphing the daily one-hour show called “Space Station Live” into a daily half- 6 Milestones hour show, primarily aimed at media representatives who follow NASA closely 8 2013 Social Media Spotlight and are interested in details, plus a weekly two-minute video called “Space to 10 NASA’s ‘what’s next’ team Ground” designed for the general public. The snappy “Space to Ground” has the advantage that it can be easily used in a variety of venues, including the 12 NASA hails success of NASA home page, outreach events, airport kiosks, museums/science centers, commercial space program, traveling exhibits and various social media. The changes allow us to reach plans readied for astronauts more people, produce products better suited to two different audiences and overall make better use of our resources. We’re getting good feedback on the PHOTO changes, but one of the first responses came in an email from a woman who NASA/ said her 79-year-old mother, who is a big NASA fan and avid watcher of NASA TV, was very disappointed that her 60-minute show had been cut in half! While I don’t like disappointing anyone (and I’ve sent a signed photo to the mom in a gesture of goodwill), it’s actually a nice reminder that there are people everywhere who are inspired by what we do and really want to hear all about it. -
