It is the greatest revenge. ―The Talmud This is a total syllabus. Everything that you need to know (and dare ask) about this course is to be found in this document. It is your absolute responsibility to know and be aware of everything written in this syllabus. Course Description The purpose of this course is to critically introduce students to the “Jewish Experience,” from its inception, in the Ancient Near East, to our present time. Using several disciplines―religion, philosophy, history, literature, film, anthropology, sociology―we will explore the ways and manners by which Judaism 1 manifests itself, as well as how we come to study Judaism academically. Thus, on the one hand, we will examine the internal (ontology) intricacies and complex textures of the core ideas which have created Judaism from within, that is, how a group of people created Judaism, in both reflexive and unreflexive fashion,in reference to their material and historical conditions. In other words, what is Judaism and what does it mean to be Jewish from the Jewish perspective which has always already been in reference to its locality. On the other hand, we will examine how Judaism has been studied externally, from without, (epistemology) by others, as well as by modern academic disciplines. For this external approach has also shaped and determined the ontological constitution of Judaism. What and how others think of us is eo ipso part and parcel of who we are. We must understand that these internal-external approaches are intimately intertwined. It is first and foremost practice that creates and sustains an idea/phenomenon, namely, it is 1 For now we will take the term “Judaism” in its most common, popular understanding. a mutual venture between those who lead their lives by Judaism, Jews who bear it on their backs as it were, and those who react to and study how these people indeed bear it through their historical consciousness, faith, philosophy, and daily customs. In addition, this course is intended as a gateway to Jewish Studies major or minor at Purdue University, or for that matter, anywhere else. 2 As a general rule, its scope and methodological approaches will make it both worthwhile and necessary for any undergraduate student who wishes to do more in-depth work in Jewish Studies. Method The term “Judaism” is an abstract umbrella-like concept that covers underneath it many topics and subjects articulated by a myriad of sub-concepts: religion, philosophy, history, memory, imagination, peoplehood, culture, etc. In a manner of speaking, when we come to study Judaism, we come to study Western civilization. Thus how to study Judaism is a problem of its own. Therefore, in order to address this conundrum, we will impose an intellectual grid whose purpose is to construct our subject which will guide us through this difficulty. Note that we must remember that it is indeed an intellectual construct. By no means one should take it to be more than what it is: our framework for study. Therefore, this list is very limited. 2 Daily Life Practices Economics Knowledge Religion The Arts Grading Method Weekly Contribution to Class Blog: Preparing for class sessions includes a weekly writing assignment in which you will share your insights regarding (1) that week’s readings (2) key questions which were discussed in the previous week (3) unique contribution inspired by your own life experience, other classes or other sources not available to other participants (4) reactions to other contributors (respectfully, please!) creating an ongoing discussion. Blog entries must be posted every Tuesday by 10:00 AM and handed in as a hard copy at the beginning of Tuesday class. 25% All written, handed in assignments, must be typed written in a font of 12 pts. and double spaced. Attendance 5% It is absolutely required that you attend all classes. Failure of attending class will result in your failure to understand the material, which will doom your successful completion of this class. Therefore, regular attendance is MANDATORY. Attendance is monitored at the beginning of each class; lateness (more than 10 minutes) and early departure both count as absence. A maximum of three unquestioned absences is allowed. Subsequent absences may be excused on the basis of legitimate, written documentation; undocumented absences result in reduction of the course grade. Assuming attendance to be 5% of a course grade worth 100 points, undocumented absences have the following point values: 0-3 absences = 5 points; 4-9 absences = 2.5 points; 10+ absences = 0 points. Midterm: Two hour evening exam: T/F, multiple choice and essay questions. 25% Research Paper: 8 pages; no more, no less. The paper will represent a detailed investigation into a topic of your choice that grows out of your involvement with the material studied. 25% (Proposal 5%, Paper 20%) By the first class of week six (6) you are to hand in a two pages research proposal on a subject of your interest. You will schedule to meet with one of the assistants for approval. The proposal will outline the following points: ➢ subject 3 ➢ rationale (why this subject?) ➢ thesis ➢ bibliography (you must use a minimum of 7 written sources) Due date: Second class of week 14. Comprehensive Final: T/F, multiple choice and essay questions. 20% Grades are recorded using the plus/minus option, as follows: A+ 97-100, A 94-96, A- 90-93, B+ 87-89, B 84-86, B- 80-83, C+ 77-79, C 74-76, C- 70-73, D+ 67-69, D 64-66, D- 60-63, F 0-59. For more on grades and on the relation between plus/minus grades and GPA, see the updated University Regulations. No Incompletes or extensions are allowed for any reason. (You can always talk to me, but please don't hold your breath). Make-ups are allowed ONLY (a) with a signed medical excuse, AND (b) within three calendar days of the original test; you must ALSO (c) contact me either prior to or on the day of the exam to notify me of your absence. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. The penalty for missing the Final Exam is an "F" in the course. Cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of academic dishonesty―as defined in the Purdue University Regulations―are penalized with a grade of "F" in the course. While papers and tests will not be returned to you, you can arrange to see them by making appointments. Film Five film screenings will be scheduled for Tuesday 6:00-8:30 pm (Details TBA). One extra credit point will be given for every film screening attended. But I believe I have read all of his books on Jewish philosophy and Halacha, and even some of his Talmudic novellae and halachic decisions. I have also spoken with many of his students. Here are my impressions. No doubt Rav Soloveitchik was a Gadol Ha-dor (a great sage of his generation). He was a supreme Talmudist and certainly one of the greatest religious thinkers of our time. His literary output is incredible. Still, I believe that he was not a mechadesh – a man whose novel ideas really moved the Jewish tradition forward, especially regarding Halacha. He did not solve major halachic problems. This may sound strange, because almost no one has written as many novel ideas about Halacha as Rav Soloveitchik (3). His masterpiece, Halakhic Man, is perhaps the prime example. Before Rav Soloveitchik appeared on the scene, nobody – surely not in mainstream Orthodoxy – had seriously dealt with the ideology and philosophy of Halacha (4). Page 1 In fact, the reverse is true.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 773 ) Thesis Abstract Judaism is a religion that emphasises the importance of a set of practical commandments and in the history of Jewish philosophy various attempts have been made to rationalise or justify these commandments. In this thesis I try to establish a general model for the justification of practices through a critical examination of two such attempted rationalisations. However, the study is framed within the more general question of whether or not there can be such a thing as Jewish Philosophy as a genuinely substantive discipline. Thus, I take the particular topic of rationalising the commandments as a ‘case study’ in order to see whether we can do substantive Jewish philosophy at least in the practical sphere. In the main body of the thesis I look at the methods of rationalisation of Moses Maimonides and Joseph Soloveitchik and argue that despite being based on very different scientific models they share a central methodological presumption that I term the Priority of Theory (PoT).

    1 Prof. David Johnson Prof. Meir Soloveichik Syllabus: PHI 4931H Seminar: Metaphysics of Judaism Spring 2021 Goals of Seminar: Using medieval and modern philosophical sources, we will rigorously and extensively examine traditional Judaism’s philosophical and theological views on the nature and attributes of God. For centuries, Jewish philosophers, theologians and mystics have pondered biblical passages that speak of complex subjects such as: God’s love for Abraham and his children Israel; God dwelling within the tabernacle, and the Temple in Jerusalem; God’s foreknowledge of all human events, but also His anger at Israel’s sin, His regret following sin and His forgiveness following this anger. Maimonides, famously, read these verses through the lens of his own philosophical approach, seeking as much as possible to reduce any true analogy between God’s attributes (such as knowledge and love) and similarly named attributes of human beings. Describing biblical language about God as referring to either “negative attributes” or “attributes of action,” he insisted that any other approach would embody an assault on the doctrines of God’s perfection and noncorporeality. Maimonides’s philosophy does not embody the totality of Jewish thought. From Judah Halevi before Maimonides, to Nahmanides after, this approach was criticized as irreconcilable with biblical language and with Talmudic theology. Meanwhile, in the Christian world, Thomas Aquinas seriously engaged Maimonides’s writings and responded to them in a way that can be deeply instructive to Jewish students of philosophy. Centuries later, Michael Wyschogrod, influenced by the writings of Protestant theologian Karl Barth, offered his own critique of Maimonides.

    Between the Ritual and the Ethical: Mastery Over the Body in Modern Theories of Ta‘amei ha-Mitsvot David Shatz* As Socrates awaits his death,1 his friends urge him to commit suicide. Socrates refuses, because God owns his body; but he then expresses his own general, positive attitude to his impending death. His body is a prison, he declares, incarcerating his soul. The body’s desires and appetites pester him, diverting him from intellectual pursuits; and the body, being a body, cannot attain the highest and only true form of knowledge, knowledge of the abstract world of Forms. Death is therefore liberating and welcome. And not only does the body carry negative value, it is not a person’s true self. Rather, the soul is. If people at the funeral state, “Socrates is being buried,” they are mistaken. It’s not Socrates; it’s a body that Socrates once wore or inhabited.2 Plato’s dualistic view of the human being—that human beings are composites of body and soul—was maintained by most people in the Middle Ages, philosophers and non-philosophers alike.     Critical Philosophy of Halakha (Jewish Law): The Justification of Halakhic Norms and Authority Yonatan Yisrael Brafman Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Yonatan Yisrael Brafman All rights reserved ABSTRACT Critical Philosophy of Halakha (Jewish Law): The Justification of Halakhic Norms and Authority Yonatan Brafman Contemporary conflicts over such issues as abortion, same-sex marriage, circumcision, and veiling highlight the need for renewed reflection on the justification of religious norms and authority. While abstract investigation of these questions is necessary, inquiry into them is not foreign to religious traditions. Philosophical engagement with these traditions of inquiry is both intellectually and practically advantageous. This does not demand, however, that these discussions be conducted within a discourse wholly internal to a particular religious tradition; dialogue between a religious tradition and philosophical reflection can be created that is mutually beneficial. To that end, this dissertation explores a central issue in philosophy of halakha (Jewish law): the relation between the justification of halakhic norms and halakhic-legal practice. A central component of philosophy of halakha is the project of ta’amei ha-mitzvot (the reasons for the commandments). Through such inquiry, Jewish thinkers attempt to demonstrate the rationality of Jewish religious practice by offering reasons for halakhic norms. At its best, it not only seeks to justify halakhic norms but also elicits sustained reflection on issues in moral philosophy, including justification and normativity. Still, there is a tendency among its practitioners to attempt to separate this project from halakhic-legal practice.

LANGTON The Holocaust has provoked a wide variety of Jewish religious responses, some of which include the claim that, ultimately, historical analysis is incapable of explaining the Nazi genocide. Other Jewish religious thinkers have argued that they can trace God’s providential action and revelation in history, often drawing heavily upon historical resources including survivor testimonies, court transcripts and other accounts of atrocities.

However, this wisdom and its implementation cannot be contained in any book. No written word can deal in advance with the innumerable situations, changes of circumstances, and new developments that normally occur in the history of men and nations. The eternal word of the Torah required a time-related teaching in order to become effective in the life of the Jewish people. This was the tradition passed on by the living word from generation to generation, the Torah she’baal’Peh, the Oral Torah, beside the Torah she’be’Ktav, the Written Torah.     The Plight of the ‘Agunah and Conditional Marriage* Rabbi Dr. Yehudah Abel Agunah Research Unit University of Manchester www.mucjs.org/agunahunit.htm Abstract: The debate over conditional marriage as a possible solution to the problem of ‘iggun receives relatively little attention from contemporary halakhic authorities. The issue is assumed to have been “put to sleep” by the opposition to the French and Turkish proposals of the early 20th century, as voiced in the responsa collected in ’Eyn Tenai Be-Nissu’in (1930) and despite the response to those arguments by R. Eliezer Berkovits in his Tenai Be-Nissu’in Uv-Get (1966). This paper provides a detailed summary and review of the arguments in those publications (which are not universally accessible).
