    HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION

Dear OHSBCA Members, Welcome to the 68th annual OHSBCA State Clinic, January 17th, 18th and 19th of 2019. You are a member of the 2nd largest coaches associations in the United States. Many high school coaches and college speakers have said that this is one of the best clinics in the nation. I am hoping that you are able to take something from this year’s clinic and go back to your school to make the young men in your program better this coming year and for future players as well. With my involvement on this board for the past 5 years, I have seen the giant steps forward the association has made. It is my honor to give back as Director of the 2019 State Clinic. This venue at the Hyatt Regency and Columbus Convention Center is just one example of what a first class operation we all are here to witness. If there is anything that any of our 24 board members or the Hyatt personnel can do to make your experience more enjoyable, please let us know. Your board is committed to making this a most enjoyable and rewarding experience, and represents you throughout the entire year. We have the opportunity to recognize and honor four (4) of our own with their induction into our OHSBCA Hall of Fame this weekend. I truly hope that you take the opportunity to attend our banquet on Friday at noon in the Regency Ballroom to honor these four great men who have given so much to their schools, community and our association. The banquet also includes many other awards being given to your peers and scholarships to the children of our members. I have taken great pride in putting together a great lineup of clinic speakers who have a variety of messages that will help you to get back into “baseball mode” as we get closer to our seasons approaching. We continue to learn and seek information and I feel that this year’s speakers will truly help all of us grow our players and build a stronger program. Welcome from OHSBCA President, Rob Lavengood Welcome to the 2019 Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Coaches Clinic. It is truly an honor to serve as President of one of the top baseball coaches associations in the country. While being involved with this organization, I have increased my knowledge of the game of baseball and met several new friends. The amazing coaches that I have had the chance to meet and listen to have helped me grow as a person and a coach. The best part of this journey has been meeting such great friends associated with the game of baseball. I would never have had this opportunity without the help of some great coaching friends like Chad Jensen and Curt Karpinski, who pushed me to get involved. This year Craig Kyle has done a fantastic job putting together your clinic and John Bakalar has worked hard lining up vendors for the exhibit hall. Special thank you to all of our Executive Board and the district reps for not only your hard work, but for your professionalism. The Board has made my time as president go very smoothly. Please, when you get a chance, thank them for their dedication and work put in throughout the entire year. Lastly, I want to thank our host, The Hyatt Regency, and all of our sponsors who make it possible for us to put on a first-class clinic. Please enjoy the weekend. I hope you continue learning about this great game of baseball and use your increased knowledge within your program to keep Ohio high school baseball great! Good luck to all of you this upcoming spring.

Chuck Schilling was born and raised in Stow, Ohio and graduated from Stow HS in 1974 earning letters in Football, Basketball and Baseball and sharing the Harold Sloop Award upon graduation for the Outstand Senior Athlete. He went on to attend Marietta College and Kent State University as an Education major before leaving college in 1978 to pursue a career in the Steel Fabricating and the Finishing Systems Installation field.

Chuck was hired by Sharon Lowe and the Hudson City School District in October of 1981 as the Courier and has been employed for the past 37 years with the district as a Maintenance Assistant, the Supervisor of Maintenance and Grounds (24 years), Supervisor of Facility Services (8 years) and currently as the District’s Project / Construction Coordinator. Chuck joined OHSBCA Hall of Fame Baseball Coach George Sosebee’s baseball staff in the spring of 1983 as the freshmen coach for three years before stepping away in 1986 to focus on his new position with the district as the Supervisor of Maintenance. In 1987, Head Baseball Coach, Jeff Brown encouraged him to return to coaching baseball as his JV Coach and in 1988 he was asked to assume the Head Coaching position when Coach Brown decided to return to Graduate School. Using the strong foundation (and many of the program nuances) that Coach Sosebee had built and Coach Brown maintained he started his 25 year Head Coaching career. s 47 s Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association 2018 ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR AWARDS

CENTRAL: Pat Palumbo (Westerville South High School) Pat Palumbo has served as Varsity Assistant Coach at Westerville South for 14 years. Without Coach Palumbo the Wildcat Baseball Program would not have the Unique Positive Culture which it demonstrates, along with being an Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach, Pat is also a Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach, and has been for 20-plus years. Coach Palumbo has-been-able to model the positive idea of being a multiple-sport athlete to our program, since he is a multiple-sport coach. And a very successful one. During the Basketball Tournament/Baseball Pre-Seasons it is not uncommon for Coach Palumbo to spend 2 hours at basketball practice followed by another 90 minutes doing outfield and hitting drills. But, by far his most impressive role with the team has nothing to do with coaching outfield, infield, bunt coverage, or small-ball offense. He has demonstrated that he is the “Mortar” that has kept our Team’s individual “Bricks” together to complete the build of our Program. Pat coaches Life to Wildcat baseball players, not just pitching, hitting and fielding. Two years ago, Westerville South JV Coach Dave Weissman passed away before the 2017 season from cancer. Coach Palumbo spoke at the Candlelight Vigil Honoring Coach Weissman, which moved team members to emotions. Last year with the death of two Westerville Policemen, Coach Palumbo took it upon himself to Honor the Officers by personally raising the Blue American flag before every game played at Westerville South. Finally, during our 2018 Spring Trip to Vero Beach Florida, we found out the night before our first game that our Left fielder’s mother had passed away. Coach Palumbo gathered the players and led the Candle Light Vigil outside of our dorm that evening. Coach Palumbo is truly a Blessing. Coach Palumbo is an Outstanding Coach, Friend, Husband, Father, and players Love Him. EAST: Tyler Buchanan (John Glenn High School) Tyler Buchanan has been with our program for the past eight years. He was our JV coach for the first five years and was our varsity assistant last year. During his time here our program has flourished. He brings enthusiasm and toughness with him every day. He graduated in 2003 and was a senior my first year as a head coach at JGHS. Tyler works with our infielders and pitchers and is constantly researching and implementing drills to develop our players to their full potential. During games he coaches first and calls our pitches. After games and during the off season, he works on the field. He spends countless hours and money improving our field. He works in Columbus and drives into New Concord for practice every day. Tyler is married to his wife Kelli and has three children, Blaise, Briley and Braunson. NORTHEAST: Dan Rodriguez (Massillon Jackson High School) Dan has been an assistant coach here at (Massillon) Jackson HS for the past 6 seasons and the past 5 as Assistant Head Coach and Pitching Coach. Dan has been a part of a historical run for our program winning the state titles in 2014 and 2017 and OHSBCA Poll Titles in 2016 and 2017. His pitching staff has carried this program over the past five seasons and the stats back it up... 2014 and 2017 State Champions, 2016 and 2017 Poll State Champions, 2014-18 Federal League Champs, 2014-18 District Champs, National Ranked 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 31 Academic All State, 3 All Americans, 1 MLB Draft. Dan has been vital to the facility upgrades to our field and heavily involved in fundraising for our program: Facility upgrades include a turf infield 2016 ($230,000), New entry way plaza 2016 ($50,000), Indoor training facility 2019 ($550,00). Dan is also involved in the college recruiting process for our players and over his five years has helped to send 41 players (11 DI) to the collegiate level since 2014 with thirteen of those being pitchers! Overall Coach Rodriguez has been a huge part of the success of our program! NORTHWEST: Tony Vasko (Tiffin Columbian High School) Tony exudes leadership, passion, persistence, and service with all he does both inside and outside of our program. A consummate worker, Tony exemplifies what it takes to be a class act both on and off the field. Tony is a dedicated English teacher, golf coach, and baseball coach, for the Tiffin City Schools School District. He also is a dedicated family man for his children, (Drew and Casey), and his wife, (Shena.) Since day one within our program over 13 years ago, Tony has exemplified what it takes to become a champion, in all that you do. Whether washing the entire program’s uniforms for the next day’s game to printing off scouting reports and player forms, to serving as a mentor for student-athletes in need; Tony ALWAYS answers the bell. Tony is responsible for many of the day to day tasks within our program that some may see as mundane, tedious, or outright hard. His constant sacrifice and service to others is second to none. His willingness to “get dirty” and find a solution for our baseball needs never fails to amaze me. A few years ago he took on the task of repainting our backstop in DECEMBER to ensure it was ready to go for the upcoming season on his own time. Currently, he serves as the vice president for our little league system and helps over 125 kids prepare for baseball the best they can each and every moment. If he is able, then he will help in any way possible to ensure our student-athletes have the best possible experience within the baseball program. Our successes as a program are in direct correlation with his hard work and dedication. I am pleased to nominate Tony for such a special award. Finally, I want to add that if chosen, it would be Tony’s second time earning this award! He is truly an amazing coach, teacher, and leader for our students, school, and community. He deserves any and all recognition that he receives. SOUTHEAST: Chris Graham (Wellston High School) Chris Graham has been an assistant varsity baseball coach with the Wellston Golden Rockets for a total of 13 seasons. Coach Graham has been a part of over 200 wins during his tenure as an assistant. He has been an assistant under 3 head coaches and has compiled 4 TVC championships while being an assistant coach. He has also been a part of 4 sectional titles as well. The numbers that he has been a part of isn’t the reason for his nomination. He is very dedicated to not only our baseball program but to the Wellston City School District as a whole. He has held other coaching positions in the districts for more than the 13 years as the assistant baseball coach. He really does go above and beyond for the student – athletes. He takes his personal time and equipment to train athletes to ensure that they are ready for the season. The age groups that he does this for is from 8 years old to seniors in high school. He takes care of painting the field for all of our home games and puts countless hours in during the off season to make sure our field is in the best shape possible. Coach Graham is also in charge of our pitching staff. He calls the pitches and is very knowledgeable about the game of baseball. He is not only a great coach, but more importantly a great person. He treats all of the players, fellow coaches, opposing coaches and players, umpires, and all involved in the game with the utmost respect. He is a great role model to our players. SOUTHWEST: Ryan Stewart (Mason High School) Ryan Stewart, a former Comet baseball player and 2004 graduate of Mason High School, has been a veteran of Mason’s staff since 2010. Ryan absolutely bleeds Kelly Green and has become an invaluable asset to the Mason Baseball Program. Simply put, no one works harder, or is willing to do more than Ryan. He serves as the varsity outfield and bench coach where he flawlessly manages all aspects of pre-game, in-game, and post-game analytics. Ryan also handles most of the field maintenance and daily program communication. So much of what Ryan does can go unnoticed by people outside our program, but each of our coaches and players know how important he is to our team’s success. Ryan makes everyone’s job easier through the work he does. Beyond the “dirty work” Ryan is also terrific at building relationships with his players and serves as a calming influence with them as well as our coaching staff. Coach “Stew”, as the players call him is loved and respected by our guys and has been such a supporter of their success. Ryan epitomizes what it means to be a Mason Comet and continues to serve as an example to our coaches in how to work hard and lead with integrity. s 48 s OHIO HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION ★ ★ ★ SALUTES ★ ★ ★ 2018 State Tournament Champion Coaches

Over the years our teams have benefited from the efforts of everyone from our administration to alumni. Being able to share the 2018 season, and tournament run with those who have supported us for the last 15 years was a joy. It’s an honor to carry on the tradition of excellence established in 2004 by Head Coach Matt Lattig and our first group of Patriots. The most satisfying part of our profession is watching young men develop and accomplish more than they realize is possible. Our 2018 team was a group of talented overachievers who were willing to take full ownership of the learning process. Every player worked hard to get better every day. The senior class embodied the word excellence on and off the field. Those guys were champions long before the final out at Huntington Park. It is a privilege to work with our amazing staff each day. A special thanks goes to the efforts of Tom Waterwash (OLIB ‘09), Zack Michael (OLIB ‘10), Bob Brenning, Jimmy Onate, Michael Cimaglia, Matt Matthaes (OLIB ‘14) Conner Smith (OLIB ‘16) and Andy Yazrombek (OLIB ‘11). These men are all dynamic leaders who have helped create consistency within our culture. This group is passionate about the game, and extremely dedicated to the development of our student-athletes. Personally, a sincere debt of gratitude is owed to my wife, Jennifer and our 3 kids, Jetta, Knox and Drake, who have relentlessly supported our baseball dream. It is priceless to have you guys along for the journey.

Division II: Head Coach: Mike Barhost, Chaminade Julienne High School 1. 19 years coached, all at Chaminade Julienne. 9 years as Head Coach. 2. 124 - 111 career record 3. 2018 record 24-5 4. 124 - 111 at CJ Program Accomplishments: 1. 2 State Championships. 1970, 2018 2. 4 Final fours. 1970, 1975, 2017, 2018. 3. 6 District Championships. 1970, 1975, 1986, 2014, 2017, 2018. 4. 3 GCL League Championships. 2015, 2017, 2018. Season Highlights: After finishing 2017 as the State Runner-ups we started the 2018 season very slow. We were 0-3 and struggling to score runs. Our pitching and defense were both still playing very well, so I wasn’t in panic mode. We went on a 10 game winning streak after that, hit a bump in the road with 2 tough league losses in the middle of the season, then reeled off 11 wins straight wins to finish the year. We knocked off a couple of the number 1 ranked teams in the State during our run, and the defending State Champs. Our guys that returned from the 2017 State runner up team were determined to get back and have another chance at winning the title. We played a lot of close ball games all season and had a knack for finding ways to win close games. Winning the title was an awesome experience. It was something that I had aspirations of as a player, and for several years as a coach. I went through a lot of tough seasons playing in a very strong league and had little success. These past 2 seasons have been a thrill and winning it all was a dream come true. I’m looking forward to 2019 and trying to make our way back for a 3rd time.

It was an incredible journey that I was truly blessed to share with such an incredible group of coaches and players. Honestly, this was the season that nobody saw coming. The newspaper headline “South Range Raiders Complete Improbable Title Run” summed up our season perfectly. Not being a member of a conference this year presented a different approach to the regular season. Instead of playing for the opportunity to win a league title, we shifted our focus from day one to the state tournament. Not being a member of a league afforded us more freedom in our scheduling and a chance to schedule up. I cannot say enough about how our players handled the difficult schedule put before them. Opening the season going 2-6 would have derailed most teams. With a third of our season at that point in the books, our players and coaches worked hard on correcting mistakes that plagued us early. As a result, we were able to put together some quality wins and started to play our best ball heading into the state tournament. Entering the tournament with a regular season record of 11-15, our players went in with the mindset that it was brand new season and a chance to prove themselves. They didn’t look at our record as a negative, but as a badge of honor that they proudly wore throughout our tournament run. Our players believed in themselves and played for one other. We didn’t have a very large senior class (4 to be exact), but what they lacked in number they sure made up with their heart, leadership, and desire. To bring the 1st ever state title in any sport back to South Range is something that we will all cherish for the remainder of our lives. I would like to thank my assistant coaches Don DeChellis, Paul Munson, Bill Sattler, Ryan Miller, Dan Macinga. Without their hard work and dedication, this would not have been possible. I would also like to thank my players for the way they represented the South Range community, their school, their parents, coaches and themselves. Lastely, I would like to thank my wife and my two kids for their support throughout the season. This has been a dream come true. Thank you and I love you!

District Championships: Number & Years: 13 District Titles League Championships: Number & Years: 33 League Titles Awards/Recognition Notable Alumni: Jared Hoying (Texas Rangers, MLB Debut 5/23/16) 2018 Season Highlights: A reflection on your 2018 state championship journey: As with any State Championship, it was a very special season for us. We did experience our share of ups & downs along the way. We had magical moments, but we also had low points. As soon as we reached a point of “righting the ship” we played better baseball with each passing day...... all the way to the final game. I’m very proud of what our team accomplished. It’s a tremendous feat to win a State Championship. It unites players with a special connection that lasts the rest of their lives. The achievements this year were a result of many factors, but namely, due to the talent, hard work, and leadership of our players, and the dedication of our coaching staff. We have a tireless group of coaches with a burning desire to make our program a success. Our players worked very hard this year, with a great attitude. And to bring all that full circle, we had four seniors this year, with varying degrees of playing time, who put the team’s goals ahead of their own personal goals. Regardless of their roles, they came every day, every practice, every game, ready to give everything they had. They were prepared when their number was called and if it wasn’t, they supported the other players that played. It certainly was rewarding to see. That type of leadership is one of the things that I’ll remember most about this group.
