The monitoring was undertaken during the reduction of the ground surface level. Segments of a north- east/south-west aligned dwarf wall were recovered, abutting another dwarf wall that extended out of the development area. Sealed flint and clay walls were dated to between the mid 17th and 18th centuries. The ground works exposed later garden soils, and in general had minimal impact on the archaeological remains of the site. [Au(abr)]

A number of modern features were identified that were associated with the modern period of land use. An earlier feature of interest was a shallow feature aligned northeast-southwest across the site, thought to be a truncated gully filled with an organic sub soil containing a sherd of post-medieval pottery. Several further unstratified finds were recovered from across the site including several sherds of more post-medieval pottery, two 20th century coins and a hand-made nail. [Au(abr)]

Three test pits were excavated within the precincts of the cathedral. Despite the small scale of the excavations, it was clear that important archaeological remains were present just below the surface. Imported garden soils that corresponded with the creation of the garden in the 19th century were recorded, as well as portions of masonry proving the existence of an earlier building on the site of the existing garage. The site was designated as of international significance for Palaeolithic archaeology. This investigation centred around the excavation of two test pits to evaluate whether tree-planting would affect archaeological remains. No significant deposits were found. Four soakaways were also positioned along the southern part of the site. No significant deposits were present there. Subsequent monitoring of the site revealed that no undisturbed Pleistocene deposits of any potential Palaeolithic archaeological significance were present, and had almost certainly been quarried away in the late 19th century. Though it was not possible to determine the full extent of the remains, it was thought that they were extensive and present throughout the site. Observations at twenty locations excavated for soil analysis have enabled a limited interpretation of the stratigraphy exposed, and identified area likely to be richer in archaeological survival than others. Roman and medieval finds indicate 'background noise' of occupation. Despite the lack of features located during this phase of work, it was advisable that a watching brief be conducted when ground reduction was undertaken in the area of the car park and on other areas not previously reduced to check for archaeological features. The watching brief was carried out in conjunction with a tree planting exercise. A stone wall was located running through a number of pits. This wall had been robbed in a number of places. Road metalling was noted in some areas, in conjunction with the wall. Demolition rubble was a common feature in all trenches.. This project was the culmination of works chiefly carried out in 2001. Despite the position of the barn in the centre of the old village of Davington, little of archaeological interest was revealed either beneath the barn or in the immediate vicinity. 19th century bottle glass and pottery sherds were found in deposits beneath the barn. However, the barn itself was of clear late 17th/early 18th century date. From this, it was assumed that the barn had at some point been dismantled and re-erected at this site. [Au(abr)]

The earliest features form the site were a number of 13th century pits along with a beam slot, suggesting construction activity in the north of the site.
