  • Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory Honors Legacies of Muhammad Ali
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory Honors Legacies of Muhammad Ali and Hank Aaron as Civil Rights Heroes Powerful Mural Debuts Tuesday, June 27 Louisville, KY – June 26th, 2017 - Muhammad Ali once called Hank Aaron, “The only man I idolize more than myself.” These two titans of the American sports scene have much in common as heroes who endured racism and faced down challenges with conviction. An original art installation at Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory entitled, Ali & Aaron: United in The Fight, explores the historic role both athletes played in the fight for civil rights, and inspires guests to examine their own convictions and beliefs. The stirring mural places Ali and Aaron in the context of the Civil Rights movement, starting in the 1950s and continuing to current day. Other figures and events depicted in the mural include protest marches and sit-ins, victims of the 1963 Alabama church bombing, slain NAACP leader Medgar Evers, Louisville activist Anne Braden, and U.S. Representative John Lewis. The monumental piece is 10-feet tall and 30- feet wide, and was painted by Louisville artist, Victor Sweatt. It will be on display through October 8. The exhibition is an interactive experience for guests, who are encouraged to affirm their own convictions by answering the questions, “What beliefs do you go to bat for?” and “What freedoms do you fight for?” Guests can share their written answers by posting them on a wall in the gallery, which becomes an ever-changing part of the exhibition. “I’ve always felt a responsibility to use my baseball fame to better the lives of all people.

  • Ghosts of the Abyss. Titanic’S Bow As Seen from Mir II
A Dive to the titAnic Only a handful of craft can transport people to the deepest ocean realms, and I, as a maritime archaeologist, have been fortunate enough to dive in several of these deep submergence vehicles, also known as submersibles. My most exciting dive was to the wreck of the Titanic, which lies two and a half miles beneath the surface. The grand ocean liner sank in the early morning of April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg, with a loss of more than 1,500 lives. In the fall of 2001, I was invited to take part in a Titanic expedition headed by James Cameron, director of the 1997 film Titanic. The goal of the expedition was to film the vessel’s remains using deep submersibles on which were mounted powerful lights and a unique high-definition 3D video camera. Cameron then produced a 3D IMAX documentary film, Ghosts of the Abyss. The Mirs are 26 feet long, weigh more than 18 tons, and can carry three people—a pilot and two scientists or observers. I am participating in this expedition as a representative of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

  • A Father's Love
A FATHER’S LOVE The documentary movie The March of the Penguins follows the Emperor Penguins of Antarctica on their incredible journey through ice and snow to mating grounds up to 70 miles inland. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this beautiful film captures the drama of these three-foot-high birds in the most inhospitable of environments. Once the penguins have made the trek to their mating grounds and the females have produced their single eggs, a remarkable exchange occurs. Through an intricate dance, each mother swaps her egg into the father's care. At this point the father becomes responsible for the egg and must keep it warm. As this part of the story unfolds, the camera shows remarkable shots of the penguin fathers securing the eggs on top of their feet and sheltering them against the cold, which will drop to as low as 80 degrees below zero. Freeman narrates: Now begins one of nature's most incredible and endearing role reversals. It is the penguin male who will tend the couple's single egg. While the mother feeds and gathers food to bring back for the newborn, it is the father who will shield the egg from the violent winds and cold. He will make a nest for the egg atop his own claws, keeping it safe and warm beneath a flap of skin on his belly. And he will do this for more than two months… As the winter progresses, the father will be severely tested. By the time their vigil on top of the egg is over, the penguin fathers will have gone without food of any kind for 125 days, and they will have endured one the most violent and deadly winters on earth, all for the chick.

Assignment 3 1/21/2015 The University of Wollongong School of Computer Science and Software Engineering CSCI124/MCS9124 Applied Programming Spring 2010 Assignment 3 (worth 6 marks) • Due at 11.59pm Thursday, September 9 (Week 7). Aim: Developing programs with dynamic memory and hashing. Requirements: This assignment involves the development of a database for a cinema. The program is designed to look up past movie releases, determining when the film was released, the rating it received from the Classification Board and its running time. To accelerate the lookup, a hash table will be used, with two possible hash functions. The program will report how efficiently the table is operating. Storage will be dynamic, enabling the space used by the program to be adjusted to suit the datafile size. The program must clean up after memory usage. During development, the program may ignore the dynamic nature until the program is working. As an addendum, the assignment also involves the use of compiler directives and makefiles. Those students who use a platform other than Linux/Unix will be required to ensure that their programs comply with the specifications below. The program is to be implemented in three files: ass3.cpp contains the simplest form of main function, hash.h contains the function prototypes of the publicly accessible functions, where the implementations of these functions will be placed in the file hash.cpp. The first two files should not be altered, although you may write your own driver programs to test your functions during development. The third file contains the stubs of the four public functions, plus a sample struct for holding the records, usable until they are changed for dynamic memory.
