IN TOUCH THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF DUNLOP MOTORSPORT [ www.injection.tv ] LE MANS RACE EDITION Dunlop came away from the Le Mans 24 hours delighted with the performance of its dry and light wet tyres after a difficult race in which the changing condi- tions contributed to the overall result. “We were pretty competitive in all conditions other than full wet conditions,” says Dunlop’s chief tyre technician Matthew Simpson of the LMP2 tyres. “On the slick tyres and the light wet tyres, we had a performance advantage, but in full wet conditions we struggled to get temperature into our compounds. The Essex car had engine trouble so we were never going to do better than we did, but we have to look at the tyre perform- ance in wet conditions and make it better. “The Virgo Ferrari team were very strong and our development construction at the rear allowed us to double stint safely. There was no sign of difficulty in doing so, and there was zero deterioration from the first lap to the last in a double stint, according to the drivers. Le Mans podiums for Essex Perhaps we could have triple stinted, but we didn’t test that before the race and during the race was not the time to try. Porsche and Farnbacher Ferrari “The Creation team had four punctures and three of them were caused by debris. There was not enough left of the tyre to establish the cause of the fourth.” The 2008 edition of the Le Mans 24 hours produced was difficult to drive because sometimes the power was everything from a record breaking qualifying and race there, other times it wasn’t and we couldn’t know what to John Nielsen, Casper Elgaard and Sascha Maassen pace, a record crowd of 258,500 turning out in eager expect.

  • Speed, Strategy on Display for Michelin in Monterey
PRESS INFORMATION SPEED, STRATEGY ON DISPLAY FOR MICHELIN IN MONTEREY Wide range of temperatures and strategies play to Michelin’s various strengths at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Monterey, Calif. (Sept. 15, 2019) --- WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca proved a particularly apt track name for Michelin teams in IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and MICHELIN Pilot Challenge series competitors this weekend. The sandy, abrasive, notoriously low-grip but high-wear surface is a known quantity to most competitors. However, unseasonably warm temperatures on Friday threw a curveball as teams worked to optimize both their MICHELIN® tire strategy in tandem with fuel strategy for the pair of races. Extreme swings occurred throughout the weekend. On Friday, Michelin engineers recorded temperatures as high as 93 degrees ambient and 115 degrees track. Sunday morning, the coldest session of the weekend occurred in warm-up with temperatures of 57 ambient and 60 track. Sunday’s race was more normal with temperatures in the low 70s ambient and mid 80s on track. These variances make it challenging for a team’s tire strategy and ask the tire to perform consistently in wide-ranging conditions. For this race, Michelin and IMSA coordinated to bring the MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport GT S8M commercial slicks back in action for the WeatherTech Championship GT Daytona and Pilot Challenge GS classes after running the S9M over the summer months. However, Michelin maintained its IMSA Hard tire for DPi and LMP2 competitors, and the Pilot Challenge TCR remained on the harder S9M compound as they have all season. The mix of tires still helped teams continue to set lap records in both qualifying and the two races.

  • De Ferran Wins Wild Farewell Race in Monterey
DE FERRAN WINS WILD FAREWELL RACE IN MONTEREY MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUA SECA 10-11-09 Gil de Ferran rode into the sunset with a victory in his final race Saturday, and Patrón Highcroft Racing had its own special ride as well at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to close the 2009 American Le Mans Series. De Ferran and Simon Pagenaud won the Monterey Sports Car Championships presented by Patrón after the retiring Brazilian legend's thrilling duel with Adrian Fernandez in the final 30 minutes of the four-hour classic. De Ferran beat his long-time open-wheel competitor by just 0.662 seconds to close his fantastic career. The victory was the fifth of the season for the de Ferran Motorsports Acura ARX-02a and by far the toughest. Twice, the Lowe's Fernandez Racing Acura ARX-01b entry from LMP2 got around the XM Radio Acura P1 on the final corner, only to have de Ferran's bigger engine give him the lead back on the long frontstretch. "It certainly wasn't easy. There wasn't much time to think about anything else," de Ferran said. "Coming into the weekend, there were a lot of different thoughts going through my head. But I had a job to do as a driver. It was a tough weekend from that standpoint. In a way, the race was so intense that I never had time to think of anything else." The Patrón Highcroft Acura finished second in class and third overall, more than enough to secure the LMP1 driver championship for David Brabham and Scott Sharp, and the team title for Patrón Highcroft.
