CSULB is an Equal Opportunity Employer. 1 HEAD COACH GAVIN ARROYO Arroyo is a two-time member of the U.S. Men’s Olympic Water Polo team GAVIN ARROYO (1996, 2000) and spent two years as an assistant coach at California. In 2005, he served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s Senior National TH YEAR Team planning training schedules, aiding in game preparation, organizing 11 fundraising events, and being responsible for fundamentals, tactic CAREER RECORD implementation and conditioning. 132 - 119 Arroyo started the Long Beach Water Polo Club catering to youth water HEAD COACH polo players, both boys and girls, on May 1, 2010. Arroyo competed on the U.S. National Team for eight years (1993-2000) Arroyo was also awarded with his second MPSF Coach of the Year award helping lead the U.S. squad to numerous championships. The U.S. men’s for his efforts. team won the World Championships in 1994 and 1998, the 1997 FINA Cup and the 1995 and 1999 Pan American Games. He also competed on the Long Beach State had six players named to the All-MPSF teams with U.S. men’s team at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. Dan Matulis earning the lone second-team honors while Balint Meszaros, Spencer White, Milos Vrzic, Nick Rascon and Nolan McConnell earned Arroyo competed for seven years overseas playing professional water polo honorable mention. The 49ers also had four players claim All-America in Greece and Spain with five different clubs (Vouliagmeni, Glyfada, CN honors named by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.     CALIFORNIA Golden Bears 2005 SEASON IN REVIEW John Mann was the Bears’ leading scorer in 2005, tallying 56 goals and earning first-team All-America, first- team All-MPSF and MPSF All- Tournament honors. Marshall was the winner of the Golden Bear Coaches Award, and Sharf and junior Brian Bacharach were the recipients of the Academic Achievement Award. Tyrrell and Monsees received the Peter J. Cutino Water Polo Trophy as the team’s most improved players. Monsees finished the 2005 campaign with 16 goals in 27 matches, and Tyrrell tallied 11 goals in 27 contests, including two goals in the Bears’ 9-7 victory over UC Irvine in the MPSF third- place match. Marshall is the third-ever recipient of the Golden Bear Coaches’ Award after competing in six matches last fall, notching goals against Santa Clara and UC Santa Cruz. Junior Sean Kern led the comeback effort with four goals and helped the Bruins to their third championship title in five years. The Cardinal had a 4-2 lead at halftime, but Kern scored twice in a span of 2:06 to tie the game in the third period. With seconds remaining in the third period, the Bruins took their first lead of the game, 5-4, with a goal by senior Matt Armato. Early in the final quarter Kern gave the Bruins their fifth-unanswered goal of the game. Sophomore Pasi Dutton added a goal in the fourth period for Stanford. With the score 6-5, the Cardinal had a shot on goal with six sec- onds remaining in the game but freshman goalkeeper Brandon Brooks made the save. All-Tournament Team: Kern was named most outstanding player of the tournament and Armato was a first-team all-tournament selection for UCLA.
