FINAL Adelaide, July-August 2005 WEATHER: Cool, damp Free Ecclestone out, Tennant in by staff writers Pet Shop Boy cast as Tenth Doctor. Chameleon Factor # 79 As the club celebrated its 25th anniversary on the first of June, the success of the television show is never better. O ut t N No ow A mere thirteen weeks after it started, the new series of Doctor Who has already ! finished in the UK. The departure of star Christopher Eccleston has led to the new episodes (variously known as “series one” or “season 27”, after the 1989 season 26) being derisively named “the Eccleston three months”, and the star as “EccleQuit”. At thirteen episodes this latest series is the shortest yet, with seasons 23 to 26 running to fourteen episodes albeit of 25 minutes duration. ABC have confirmed they will not play the remaining Dalek stories, and will edit The Five Doctors for transmission. This is to comply with the terms of the 2003 agree- ment, made when the BBC and the Nation Estate were disputing their use. The contract the ABC signed then is still valid and thus prevents them from broadcasting Dalek stories post 1967. To drive the irony further, Hancock’s have stated that they SFSA magazine # 18 are not concerned with this use. q Continued Page 2 Hey, Who’s Evil, page 4. tape?, page 2 DOCTOR WHO TRIUMPHANT A S A q N from Page 1 / n o t w The new episodes have performed well in Australia, Rose the best with e N an average of 25% viewership. Only The Unquiet Dead and Aliens of k c London have rated less than a million (counting only the five mainland a J : state capitals) at the time of printing, with the former only gaining 77,250 e r u viewers in Adelaide, where it was on against a football game. t c i The Monday to Thursday repeats are also performing well, with ABC P reporting a peak audience of 350,000. Fans continue to be annoyed at the amount of adverts preceding the episodes since Roger Ramjet was taken off the 6 PM slot in January 2004. Roy Wilke rang ABC Brisbane to be told that they expect to broadcast 30 minutes of “promotions” between 5 PM Sunspot 720, 15/01/2005 and 7 PM. The new Doctor Who is also currently screening in Canada, South Korea and New Zealand (from July 7th), and has been purchased by The Sky watch Netherlands, Italy, Finland, Denmark, Hungary and for in-flight entertain- ment by Thomsonfly and other airlines.
