We’re in between since we can cater to both,” said Ian Ashley, the group’s guitarist and vocalist. The band sees itself as starkly opposite to Jawaiian bands though. “99 percent of our songs are origi- nal,” said lead vocalist ‘Bison,’ “which is a rarity in the islands.” Unfortunately, cover songs are pain- fully overused in Jawaiian music and the lack of depth leaves room for bands like Go Jimmy Go to make new statements. Besides the unique texture and tempo of their music, Go Jimmy Go differs from Honolulu’s pop Jawaiian bands in other ways. While Jawaiian or “island music” is the center of attention for local music producers looking to make the music industry profitable, Go Jimmy Go has made their name independently through hard work and the belief that their music has meaning. They also see themselves as sep- arate from other local “underground” bands. “Nobody’s really doing what ABOVE: we’re doing at all,” said drummer “Bison,” the lead and vocalist Shon Gregory. vocalist of Go Ashley added, “The top three Jimmy Go. bands: Ooklah the Moc, Kamakazi Kong and us, we all got a different RIGHT: thing going on with each band.
