Although one of the characters in "Interview with the Vampire" begs to Interview with the Vampire transformed into a vampire, and eagerly awaits the doom of immortality, the movie never makes vampirism look like anything but an endless sadness. That is its greatest strength. Vampires throughout movie history have often chortled as if they'd gotten away with something. But the first great vampire movie, " Nosferatu "knew better, and so does this one. The movie is true to the detailed vision that has informed all of 's novels, and which owes much to the greater taste for realism which has crept into modern horror fiction. It is a film about what it might really be like Interview with the Vampire be a vampire. The title sets the tone, and in the opening scenes, set in San Francisco, the year-old vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac submits to an interview by a modern journalist Christian Slaterjust as any serial Interview with the Vampire or terrorist bomber might sit down to talk to "60 Minutes. His path crossed that of the vampire Tom Cruisewho transformed him into a vampire, and ever since he has wandered the world's great cities, feeding on the blood of his victims. The initial meeting between Louis and Lestat takes the form of a seduction; the vampire seems to be courting the younger man, and there is a strong element of homoeroticism in the way the neck is bared and the blood is engorged. Parallels between vampirism and sex, both gay and straight, are always there in all of Rice's novels; the good news is that you can indulge your lusts night after night, but the bad news is that if you stop, you die. Tom Cruise, who initially seemed to many people an unlikely choice to play Lestat, is never less than convincing, and his slight British accent, combined with makeup that is Interview with the Vampire without being obtrusive, disguises the clean-cut star - makes him seem unwholesome in an odd, insinuating way. Brad Interview with the Vampire, whose role is probably larger, and who has been at home as the depraved hero of films like " Kalifornia ," here seems more like an innocent, a young man who makes unwise choices, and lives and lives, and lives to regret them. One of the creepier aspects of the story Interview with the Vampire the creation of the child vampire, Claudia, played by Kirsten Dunstwho Interview with the Vampire about 12 years old. The character was six in the novel, but even twice as old she is disturbing, trapped in her child's body as she ages, decade after decade. Dunst, perhaps with the help of Stan Winston's subtle makeup, is somehow able to convey the notion of great age inside apparent youth. The movie's unique glory is in its look, created by cinematographer Phillipe Rousselot and Interview with the Vampire designer by Dante Ferretti. His credits include Scorsese's " The Age of Innocence " and Gilliam's " The Adventures of Baron Munchausen ," and here he combines the elegance of the former and the fantastic images of the latter into a vampire world of eerie beauty. The action of course largely takes place at night, in old Southern plantations and French Quarter dives, along gloomy back streets and in decadent boudoirs. The film truly takes flight after the action moves on board a transatlantic sailing ship, and then into the catacombs of Paris. There are scenes set in a vast underground columbarium, where the vampires sleep on shelves reaching up into the gloom, that is one of the great sets of movie history. In Paris, Louis meets the vampires Armand and Santiago Stephen Reaand begins to understand he is a member of an international clandestine society. Vampires of course need regular supplies of fresh blood, and the details involving its procurement are dismaying to the creatures, who, to live, must constantly feed off the lives of others. Both Rice and Jordan take this subject, with its abundant possibilities for looking ridiculous, and play it as tragedy. Although much has been said about the film's level of violence and although the R rating Interview with the Vampire quite correctthose who have seen other horror films will not be particularly shocked. My complaint about Interview with the Vampire film is that not very much happens, in the plot sense. The movie is more about the history and reality of vampirism Interview with the Vampire about specific events, although some action does center around the fate s of Lestat. A stronger plot engine might have drawn us more quickly to the end, but on a scene by scene basis, "Interview with the Vampire" is a skillful exercise in macabre imagination. A film adaptation was released instarring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruiseand the novel has been adapted as a Interview with the Vampire three times. A vampire named Louis de Pointe du Lac tells his year-long life story to a reporter referred to simply as " the boy ". InLouis is a young indigo plantation owner living in Louisiana. Distraught by the death of his pious brother, he seeks death in any way possible. Louis is approached by a vampire named Lestat de Lioncourtwho desires Louis' company. Lestat turns Louis into a vampire and the two become immortal companions. Lestat spends time feeding off slaves while Louis, who finds it morally repugnant to murder humans to survive, feeds from animals. Louis and Lestat are forced to leave when Louis' slaves begin to fear the monsters with which they live and instigate an uprising. Louis sets his Interview with the Vampire plantation aflame; he and Interview with the Vampire kill the slaves to keep word from spreading about vampires living in Louisiana. Gradually, Louis bends under Lestat's influence and begins feeding from humans. He slowly comes to terms with his vampire nature, Interview with the Vampire also becomes increasingly repulsed by what he perceives as Lestat's total lack of compassion for the humans he preys upon. Escaping to New OrleansLouis feeds off a plague -ridden, five-year-old girl, whom he finds next to the corpse of her mother. Louis begins to think of leaving Lestat and going his own way. Fearing this, Lestat then turns the girl into a vampire "daughter" for them, to give Louis a reason to stay. She is then given the name Claudia. Louis is initially horrified that Lestat has turned a child into a vampire, but soon begins to care for Claudia. Claudia takes to killing easily, but she begins to realize over time she can never grow up; her Interview with the Vampire matures into that of an intelligent, assertive woman, but her body remains that of a young girl. Claudia blames Lestat for her condition and, after 60 years of living with him, hatches a plot Interview with the Vampire kill Lestat by poisoning him and cutting his throat. Claudia and Louis then dump his body into a nearby swamp. As Louis and Claudia prepare to flee to , Lestat appears, having recovered from Claudia's attack, and attacks them in turn. Louis sets fire to their home and barely escapes with Claudia, leaving a furious Lestat to be consumed by the flames. Arriving in Europe, Louis and Claudia seek out more of their kind. They travel throughout eastern Europe first and do indeed encounter vampires, but these vampires appear to be nothing more than mindless animated corpses. Inhabiting an ancient theater, Armand and his vampire coven disguise themselves as humans and feed on live, terrified humans in mock-plays before a live human audience who think the killings Interview with the Vampire merely a very realistic performance. Claudia is repulsed by these vampires and what she considers to be their cheap theatrics, but Louis and Armand are drawn to each other. Convinced that Louis will leave her for Armand, Claudia convinces Louis to turn Interview with the Vampire Parisian doll maker, Madeleine, into a vampire to serve as a replacement companion. Louis, Madeleine and Claudia live together for a brief time, but all three are abducted one night by Armand's coven. Lestat arrives, having survived the fire in New Orleans. His accusations against Louis and Claudia result in Louis being locked in a coffin to starve, while Claudia and Madeleine are locked in an open courtyard. Armand arrives and releases Louis from the coffin, but Madeleine and Claudia are burned to death by the rising sun; a devastated Louis finds their ashen remains. Louis returns to the Theatre late the following night, burning it to the ground and killing all the vampires inside, leaving with Armand. Together, the two travel across Europe for several years, but Louis never fully recovers from Claudia's death, and the emotional connection between himself and Armand quickly dissolves. Living as a loner, he feeds off any humans who cross his path, but lives in the shadows, never creating another companion for himself. Telling the boy of one Interview with the Vampire encounter with Lestat in New Orleans in the s, Louis ends his tale; after years, he is weary of immortality and of all the pain and suffering to which he has had to bear witness. The boy, however, seeing only the great powers granted to a vampire, begs to be made into a vampire himself. Angry that his interviewer learned nothing from his story, Louis refuses, attacking the boy and vanishing without a trace. The boy then leaves to track down Lestat in the hopes that he can give him immortality. The themes of Catholic guilt which pervade the novel attracted Jordan, who called the story "the most wonderful parable about wallowing in guilt that I'd ever come across. But these things are unconscious, I don't have an agenda. Jordan stated that:. She suggested that Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise switch roles, stating that "I tried for a long time to tell them that they should just reverse these roles—have Brad Pitt play Lestat and have Tom Cruise play Louis. Of course, they don't listen to me. Eventually, Rice became satisfied with Cruise's performance after seeing the completed film, saying that "from the moment he appeared, Tom was Lestat for me" and "that Tom did make Lestat work was something I could not see in a crystal ball.
