    1 Revisiting the Past as a Means of Validation: Bridging the Myth of the Resistance and the Satire of the Economic Miracle in Two Comedies “Italian style” Giacomo Boitani, National University of Ireland, Galway Abstract: Many commedia all’italiana filmmakers have acknowledged the neorealist mode of production as a source of inspiration for their practice of pursuing social criticism in realistic and satirical comedies between 1958 and 1977. The detractors of the genre, however, have accused the commedia filmmakers of “diluting” the neorealist engagement to a simple description of the habits of Italians during the Economic Miracle, a description which threatened to encourage, through the casting of popular stars, the cynical attitude it sought to satirise. In this article, I shall discuss how two commedia all’italiana directors, namely Dino Risi and Ettore Scola, produced two significant commedie, respectively Una vita difficile (1961) and C’eravamo tanto amati (1974), which bridged the Resistance setting, associated with neorealism, and the Economic Miracle setting of most commedie all’italiana in order to reaffirm their neorealist roots, thus revisiting the past as a response to the critical underestimation from which their cinematic practice suffered. Many filmmakers of the comedy “Italian style” genre (commedia all’italiana) have acknowledged Italian neorealism as a source of inspiration for their practice of pursuing social criticism in realistic and satirical comedies produced in the years between 1958 and 1977. For instance, comedy “Italian style” star Alberto Sordi said that of those involved in the genre that “our project was to reinvent neorealism and to take it in a satirical direction” (Giacovelli, Un italiano 110),1 while director Marco Ferreri stated that “the commedia is neorealism revisited and modified in order to make people go to the movies” (Giacovelli, Commedia 21).

    Federico Fellini: a life in film Federico Fellini was born in Rimini, the Marché, on 20th January 1920. He is recognized as one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time. His films have ranked in polls such as ‘Cahiers du cinéma’ and ‘Sight & Sound’, which lists his 1963 film “8½” as the 10th-greatest film. Fellini won the ‘Palme d'Or’ for “La Dolce Vita”, he was nominated for twelve 'Academy Awards', and won four in the category of 'Best Foreign Language Film', the most for any director in the history of the Academy. He received an honorary award for 'Lifetime Achievement' at the 65th Academy Awards in Los Angeles. His other well-known films include 'I Vitelloni' (1953), 'La Strada' (1954), 'Nights of Cabiria' (1957), 'Juliet of the Spirits' (1967), 'Satyricon' (1969), 'Roma' (1972), 'Amarcord' (1973) and 'Fellini's Casanova' (1976). In 1939, he enrolled in the law school of the University of Rome - to please his parents. It seems that he never attended a class. He signed up as a junior reporter for two Roman daily papers: 'Il Piccolo' and 'lI Popolo di Roma' but resigned from both after a short time. He submitted articles to a bi- weekly humour magazine, 'Marc’Aurelio', and after 4 months joined the editorial board, writing a very successful regular column “But are you listening?” Through this work he established connections with show business and cinema and he began writing radio sketches and jokes for films. He achieved his first film credit - not yet 20 - as a comedy writer in “Il pirato sono io” (literally, “I am a pirate”), translated into English as “The Pirate’s Dream”.

    Between Documentary and Neorealism: Marshall Plan Films in Italy (1948-1955) Regina M. Longo Introduction This article charts the multi-strand networks of individuals (filmmakers, industrialists, and bureaucrats), institutions (US, Italian, and multi-national) and ideas that constituted the transnational enterprise of Marshall Plan sponsored films produced in Italy from 1948 to 1955. It is a detailed investigation of two groups of films produced under the banner of two different state government information agencies: the official Marshall Plan (MP) and Mutual Security Agency (MSA) Films, and the official films of the Centro di documentazione (Documentation Center), also known as the Italian Information Agency. These films have emerged from several different US and Italian archives since the 1990s.1 Films such as Talking to the Italians (Marcellini Film for ECA, 1950); The Struggle for Men’s Minds (Europa Telefilm for MSA, 1952); Made in Italy (Romolo Marcellini for INCOM and Centro, 1952); L’Italia e il mondo (Italy and the World, Romolo Marcellini for LUCE and Centro, 1953); L’Italia d’oggi (Italy Today, Romolo Marcellini for Europa Telefilm Rome, MSA, 1953); Due civiltà si incontrano ([Two Civilizations Meet], Vittorio Gallo for INCOM, 1954); Più che un amicizia (More than a Friendship, Vittorio Gallo for INCOM, 1957) are evidence of the interconnected work of the MP and MSA and the work of the Centro and the Istituto Nazionale LUCE (LUCE). Close viewing of these titles has revealed that the productions make use of much of the same archival stock footage and feature similar voice-over narrations in both their Italian and English-language versions.

Many of the most artistically intrepid directors of the era turned to women as a means of professional and personal reinvention. This study analyzes the collaborations of Vittorio De Sica, Roberto Rossellini, Federico Fellini, and Michelangelo Antonioni with the actresses Sophia Loren, Ingrid Bergman, Giulietta Masina, and Monica Vitti, respectively. The political disillusionment with post-war reconstruction and the desire to transcend the strictures of neorealist practice manifested as an impulse to turn towards more personal and lyrical cinematic narratives.

Returning to the big screen in a new 4K restoration based on the original negatives preserved by the Cineteca Nazionale, Rome, Open City opens in selected cinemas nationwide on 7 March. “A landmark of Italian neorealism often cited as one of the greatest films ever made, Rossellini’s portrait of life under the Nazi Occupation remains remarkable for its sheer immediacy, tension and power. Made in extraordinarily straitened circumstances immediately after the liberation of Rome, the film follows engineer Giorgio (Marcello Pagliero) in his attempts to evade the Germans and the collaborating Italian authorities by seeking help from Pina (Anna Magnani), fiancée of a fellow member of the underground resistance, and Don Pietro (Aldo Fabrizi), the priest due to oversee her marriage. Giorgio is confident he’d never betray his comrades even if caught – but not everyone can be so strong… Basing their story partly on real people and events, Rossellini and co-writers Sergio Amidei and Federico Fellini brought a vivid authenticity to their depiction of daily lives dominated by poverty, desperation and constant fear of betrayal and violence. Shot both on the ravaged streets and in the studio (most memorably for the painfully frank second half set largely at Gestapo headquarters), the film seamlessly blends sequences reminiscent of documentary with more conventional dramatic scenes notable for their pace, precise staging and affectingly naturalistic performances.
