Without fail, we return from the Festival energized by the films and inspired by the expert advice from filmmakers. So I started thinking about ways to recreate that energy in the class- room, eventually arriving at the concept for this DVD. This DVD is a chance to hear from emerging and seasoned filmmakers as they discuss technical, legal, ethical and busi- ness issues of documentary film. It was created to be watched in brief topical sections, although it can also be watched straight through. We’ve organized the subjects as they might be encoun- tered in creating a film, from finding good stories to getting your film out there. This booklet also contains short discussion ques- tions to be used in class or by aspiring filmmakers to think more about the ideas and insights offered by our interviewees.

  • Awards Presentations at the Closing Gala for the 2015 Gimli Film Festival
Awards presentations at the Closing Gala for the 2015 Gimli Film Festival (Winnipeg, Manitoba; July 25, 2015) – Numerous awards were handed out at 2015 Gimli Film Festival’s Closing Reception on Saturday, July 25 at Johnson Hall. ALDA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN CIRCUMPOLAR FILMMAKING In recognition of 15 years of Gimli Film Festival success, founder Janis Gudrun Johnson presented the inaugural Alda Award to Sturla Gunnarsson at today’s closing ceremonies. Gunnarsson is the Iceland-born Canadian filmmaker who wowed audiences at this year’s Festival with his documentary “Monsoon”. The Alda Award –a word which means ‘wave’ in Icelandic—has been generously donated by Janis G Johnson and will be an annual award at GFF, in celebration of outstanding filmmakers from the circumpolar nations (including Canada, the United States, Russia, the Baltics and all four Nordic countries). With the increasing importance of the Arctic and our northern regions in the world today, the Alda is representative of the close relationship which has evolved between GFF and the circumpolar world. Gunnarsson was one of the filmmakers to attend the very first Film Festival in Gimli in 2000. Born in Iceland but living in Canada since the age of seven (first in Vancouver and later in Toronto), Sturla Gunnarsson has produced work in film that is truly universal in its appeal, having won awards internationally that include an International Emmy Award, a Genie, Prix Italia, and Prix Villes de Cannes. Gunnarsson’s 2015 film about India’s vast weather system, the monsoon or ‘soul of India', was one of the most popular hits at the Gimli Film Festival this year.

AIR INDIA182 ACCLAIMED FILM ABOUT AIR INDIA BOMBINGS NOMINATED FOR DONALD BRITTAIN AWARD After an explosive premiere at the Hot Docs Festival where it was hailed as “compelling, poignant... the definitive film about the Air India tragedy and the most important documentary of the past few years", Air India 182 was broadcast commercial-free in primetime by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on the anniversary of the flight's departure from Canada 24 years ago. Now, Air India 182 has been nominated for the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social and Political documentary at the 2009 Gemini Awards. The Awards ceremony will be televised nationally in Canada on Nov. 14, 2009 The powerful, intelligent and provocative film recounts the final hours, days and weeks before the plane disappeared off Irish radar screens. It reveals the story of how Canada’s first major counter-terrorism operation failed to thwart the conspiracy and lays bare the 'perfect storm' of errors that resulted in the world's most lethal act of aviation terrorism before 9/11. Filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson gained unprecedented access to those directly involved, including the families of those who died and to key CSIS and RCMP investigators. Court documents, de-classified CSIS reports and inquiry transcripts provide the factual framework for the dramatic reconstructions. Family members speak directly of their tragic loss and express outrage at the failure of Canadian authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. “The conspiracy was Vancouver-based, most of the victims were Canadian and it has profound implications about the way we think of ourselves and the society we live in,” says Gunnarsson.
