Milnerton High School celebrates its Diamond Jubilee birthday this year! Over the past 60 years, MHS has seen growing recognition and accolades, a burgeoning number of learners and staff members, socio-political changes, technological developments, innovations in teaching and learning practices, and evolving infrastructure. This year’s magazine hopes to capture some of the dynamism and progress that has characterised the last six decades.

Millies learners continue to make us proud with their achievements in all facets of school life. To the 2019 Matrics: You flew the banner high for MHS and we thank you for your investment in the school. We wish you only the best in your future endeavours!

A big thank you to our superstar PR committee members for helping put this magazine together: Chloe Govender, Janelle Davids, Aqeelah Van Der Schyff, Tammy-Lee Bosman, Hannah Hartogh, Nikita Tucker and Liam Davids. Grateful thanks as ever to Mrs Clulow for her innovative ideas and creative flair, and Ms Martins for her fabulous photos. Thank you too to Leanne Evans, Jeremy Langdon and Sarah Bruckmann for the photography, design and printing respectively.

2020 holds much to look forward to for the Millies family!

Ms F. Ferri

1 Principal's Message

Sixty years is a substantial amount of time for a school to establish itself as a centre of excellence in a community. We are very proud of our school and the legacy that has been created in this time. The school plays a significant role in our community, providing learners with an excellent stepping stone into the real world, whether it be to tertiary institutions - both in and abroad - or on scholarship to other institutions to follow their dreams.

This year we have attained a superb set of achievements, in the classroom, on the sports field and on the stage, which you will see in this edition. We celebrated our 15th year in a row 100% Matric pass rate, with some outstanding individual achievements. We are able to boast 17 international and 73 provincial sportsmen and women in our school, with an additional 130+ obtaining zonal colours. These learners have certainly shone their “light brightly”, and potentially carved out some fantastic careers in their field of choice, some to university in the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe and even one to the Ukraine (to study medicine!). We are very proud of all of them.

Congratulations to the SGB for their expansive vision, and for “taking the plunge” to build the beautiful Aquatic Centre, which Artwork by Rebekah Pringle will be opened early next year, officially. It is going to add a whole new dimension to swimming in our school, and also to Physical Education – imagine a nice warm swim in the middle of winter! I would like to give my sincere thanks to the SGB, particularly to Robert Fish who “retires” at the end of the year. His dynamic leadership style will be missed! As an old boy, he built on tradition and made our school a better place.

We sadly bid farewell to a number of teachers during the course of the year. Some were poached by New Zealand and one went to China and the other to the UK. It was the biggest turnover we’ve had in the staffroom since I started here as Principal in 2005. Mr Simon Shield and Mrs Marinette Shield set out on a new adventure in New Zealand. We will miss Simon’s energy and sense of humour, and Marinette’s caring and warm personality. Mrs Tarryn Higham also set sail for Kiwi shores. We will miss her competent and ultra-organised approach to everything she did. Ms Sandra Lynne headed for China. We will miss her witty personality and all the quips in the staffroom. We thank them all for the years of service and tireless work and effort they contributed to our school. More recently, Mrs Sandra de Sousa beat Brexit to settle in the UK. We thank her for all the hard work she put into the school in a comparatively short space of time. We wish all these Millies family members only the very best in their new endeavours.

We also say goodbye to three teachers who are retiring at the end of the year: Mr James Ochse, Ms Christa Rossouw and Ms Nicky Slabber. During his 11 year tenure, James has made a tremendous contribution to the school, especially in the finance department. He has created a situation where we are able to offer what we do, tackle new projects, maintain our facilities, and continue to build new ones. Christa will retire from education after 23 years at High School. She taught on both HL and FAL level at our school, served on the Code of Conduct Committee with distinction, and achieved excellent results over many years. We wish both James and Christa a long and happy retirement. During the course of June, Nicky’s retirement on the grounds of ill health was approved by the Education Department after 22 years at MHS. She will stay on as the Head of Athletics, which she loves, so I am very happy we are not formally saying farewell to such a loyal and dedicated staff member.

We were very happy to welcome our new staff members to the Millies team. At the beginning of this year we welcomed Ms Alison Arlow to the Life Science department, Ms Michaela Martins to the Physical Science department, Ms Martilene Ellmann to the Creative Arts department and both Mr Daniel Childs and Mrs Sue Davis to the English department. During the course of the year, we welcomed on board Ms Anna Bosman in the English Department, Ms Daniella de Pinto in the English and GET phase, Mr John Dempers in the Afrikaans Department, and Ms Johanette Burger and Ms Xio-anne de Waal in the Consumer Studies Department. All our new teachers have varied and comprehensive CVs and we look forward to their contributions, both in the classroom and extra-murally.

I would like to thank Ms Ferri and her committee of Ms Clulow and Ms Martins for all the hard work that has gone into this wonderful record for our 60th year.

Thank you too to our parents for their continued faith in Milnerton High. We thank them for the many ways in which they have volunteered and given us help and support when needed during the course of this year. We look forward to continue working with them as we focus on their children's academic, spiritual, sporting and cultural growth.

May I wish you all a wonderful holiday and a prosperous 2020.

Mr Paul Besener 2 Governing Body Message

How time flies. It’s difficult to believe that more than 5 years have passed since receiving my son’s acceptance letter to . It feels like just the other day when we eagerly opened the letter and high-fived at the news.

I’m sure it feels the same for our matric class of 2019. As I write, your finals are under way.

I wish you all the best for your exams and thank you for your contribution to our school over the years.

Stay curious, stay playful, dream big and follow your passions. You will always be part of the Millies family! On the subject of matrics, we started the year in celebration of our 15th consecutive 100% matric pass rate. What makes this even more impressive is that 83% of our learners achieved Bachelor Passes. This is a remarkable achievement and I would like to once again congratulate and thank our educators, staff and support staff for your incredible efforts in helping our learners achieve their best.

I won’t give too much away but as you read through this magazine, I’m sure you’ll be equally amazed at the many achievements of our sports, clubs, culture portfolios and societies. To all our coaches, heads and support staff, thank you for your dedication and for always going above and beyond!

We celebrated two very special 60th anniversaries this year. Congratulations go out to our principal Mr Paul Besener who celebrated his 60th birthday. We wish you many more happy years! Look out for pictures in this magazine of this special day being celebrated Millies-style!

We also celebrated our school turning 60 this year. I would like to thank Mr Cassim for arranging our 2nd annual community and family Fun Day to celebrate. This was a great success and it goes a long way in bringing the community and our school closer together. Special thanks to Mr Nichols for all his behind the scenes efforts in making the day possible.

With my son finishing his high school career, this will be my last year serving as an elected member of the school governing body. I would like to thank the SGB members that I’ve had the privilege of serving with over the years.

To Ms Janine Patton, Ms Karen Grobler, Ms Beverly Haywood, Ms Trudy Pentz, Ms Laura Bosman, Ms Daniela Berowsky, Ms Michele Viljoen, Mr Paul Besener, Mr Andre Botha, Mr Andre Swart, Mr Brian Moore, Mr Leon van Niekerk, Mr Iqbal Cassim, Mr Jason Render, Mr Frank Cumming, Mr Grant Blackshaw, Mr Aidan Pringle, Mr Alexi Maravelias, Mr Brett Anderson, Mr Francois Koen and Mr James Ochse - thank you for all that you’ve done and continue to do for Milnerton High School. It has been a true honour and a privilege to serve with you. There have been some tough, long nights and early mornings but also many successes and celebrations over the years. You are remarkable people and I cherish the friendships made during this time.

Many SGB projects were undertaken this year and include the installation of solar panels to reduce our dependency on state power and reduce our carbon footprint, renovations of the ablution facilities in the school hall, investment in water security and of course the Aquatic Centre which should be completed by the time you’re reading this magazine.

I would like to thank Ms Anina Botha and Mr Christo Botha for all they have done to make this project a success. We appreciate the giving of their time and expertise. We could not have done this without them.

Finally, a personal note of thanks to Mr Besener, Mr Cassim and Ms Pentz. You are a remarkable trio of senior managers. The perspectives and insights gained whilst working with you are invaluable. I do and will continue to look back on these years as highlights in my professional and personal life journey.

On behalf of the SGB, we wish all our staff, learners and parents a safe and joyous holiday season!

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” - African Proverb.

As the 2018/2019 Leadership marathon comes to an end, we pass the baton on to the 2019/2020 Leadership group and cheer them on from the side-lines.

At the start of our 365 day marathon, we had a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve as a team. It was to bring spirit back to our school and make Milnerton High School a place that students were proud of, and happy to be at. We knew from the moment the starting gun went off, that we wanted to take a different route to previous leadership bodies by doing and becoming something different.

As the leadership body, we had to work as a team and learn how to practice servant leadership. As with any marathon, there were ups and downs. Our characters Back: Ryan Durler, Tian Landman were tested, but we overcame the struggles and grew Middle: Glory Opeolu, Nadia de Kock, Deynique Daya Front: Seth Lee Shew, Mr P. Besener, Mrs B. From organising Sports Days, to carrying out a successful Grade 8 Orientation, initiating a beneficial School Clean-up and Self-Love Instagram campaign, introducing pants to the MHS girls' uniform, starting a new tradition of a Matric Variety Show, creating amazing spirit in assemblies, and more, the leadership body has learned valuable lessons.

When the end of the marathon was in sight, after everything we had experienced as a body, we knew that we had grown individually and as a family - both types of growth we can be so proud of today.

We wish the next Leadership group a tremendous amount of luck and we trust that you will continue the mission we set out to achieve.

R. Lund Representative Council of Learners

Whenever you have a completely democratically, learner-elected group, you are bound to have a collection of interesting characters. This year the RCL was made up of a group of innovative young people, who made me very proud, each in their own way. From the juniors with their bright futures ahead of them, to the seniors taking over the leadership for 2020, our year was filled with ups and downs, but even so we persevered and achieved our goals. The most noteworthy of these was our success in getting pants added to the girls’ school uniform.

It was a year filled with good ideas, laughter, fundraisers, volunteer work, seminars, team building and hard work.

Seven dynamic and passionate young ladies were determined in January to make an impact on Milnerton High School, and they have indeed left their mark this year. The Peer Support group aims to create awareness in the school on social issues like mental health and self-esteem, as well as create platforms where learners can talk to the Peer Support leaders and receive guidance on a one-to-one level. October was Mental Health Awareness Month and Peer Support launched the “I Choose Life Campaign” together with the support of Life Path Health and West Beach Clinic.

The PR portfolio did a wonderful job in capturing and reporting momentous events that took place this year. PR make themselves available at every school event, camera in hand, recording all the special moments. In addition they spend hours behind the scenes processing, editing and sharing their photographs and videos. The portfolio contributes to the spirit and ethos of our school in a special way and we are very proud of their hard work.

Thank you and farewell to our matrics and best wishes to the PR team for 2019/2020. We would also like to extend our appreciation and thanks to Ms Lynne for managing the portfolio for the first half of the year. You will be missed! The matric portfolio of 2018/2019 knew they had a big task ahead off them and grabbed the opportunity with open arms.

The aim was to make the year as memorable as possible for the matrics. We began our term with a Spur shadow shift to ensure that every matric would be able to afford a matric jacket, had cake breaks once a month and dress up days to bring unity amongst us as a grade. The year had so many highlights: The opening of the matric quad, our very long hike to Kirstenbosch, the matric dance, variety show, our final assembly and the Matric breakfast.

We worked alongside the house captains and Ms Nel, and together we organised big brags and cheers in assembly in order to inspire learners to get involved. We feel that we were successful in achieving our goals because this year we had mass participation in Back: Gina de Klerk, Nicholas Fiamingo, Lesedi Maledu our numerous sports days. In the beginning of 2019, MHS decided to have auditions to see if we could start a fresh, new MHS Cheerleading Squad. We were astonished by the dance talent and were delighted to go ahead with the process.

This year, MHS had a Cheerleading Squad of 24 girls. We had special outfits made and practiced every week to perform at the sports Derby Days. The crowds enjoyed it so much, we were also asked to perform at the MHS Family Fun Day.

Due to the fact that the squad was such a success in 2019, MHS will now have an official Cheerleading Squad for the years to come.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Ms Seale for everything she has done. She has been the backbone of this portfolio for the last few years and the backbone of the school’s entire event system since she got here. She has always been supportive of our ideas and we really appreciate her continuous encouragement. We encourage more learners and staff to get their qualifications and join us in service. First Aid offers opportunity to make friends and acquire knowledge and skills - knowledge and skills that could make the difference between life and death. The team have made effective changes in organisation and strategies, and have been on-hand at all school events.

13 Textbook Committee

As part of the Service Portfolio of Milnerton High, this committee was established over a year ago to facilitate the successful retrieval and issuing of text books and readers to every learner in the school.

This group, consisting mostly of grade 11 learners, proved their tenacity and professionalism by handling over 10 000 textbooks in a four-week period at the end of the year. This year will be no different.

Apart from the retrieval process which include receiving and scanning in textbooks, a large amount of repairs need to be done to lengthen a textbook’s life span. Newly-ordered books require barcodes, and new learners arriving at Milnerton High throughout the year, must receive their books too. The committee is also responsible for the smooth running of the issuing of textbooks to learners for the new academic year.

Thank you to all the members who offered their breaks, afternoons and the exam study sessions to create order amidst Back: Ash-li Meyers, Ernestina Tati, Clarize Coetzee, the chaos. Mr E. Beyers Safety Committee

Established in October 2018, this new Committee forms part of the Service Portfolio. As such, a small group of three learners and two teachers meet once a cycle to discuss serious matters concerning the safety and security of learners and staff on the school campus. The impelling force came from Elia Bordin, who lived through an earth-quake at his previous school in Italy.

Apart from planning evacuation procedures in different situations, the committee also focuses on identifying and working on unsafe areas inside the buildings and the campus grounds. Appropriate emergency signage has been obtained and mass assembly points identified. Fire training and access control are two of the priorities Robyn Liversage, Sashin Gopaul, Elia Bordin envisaged for 2020.

My sincerest gratitude to Elia, Sashin Gopaul, Robyn Liversage and Ms Van Heerden for their passion and creative problem-solving which is required for this service to the school.

The Tech Crew had, as usual, a jam-packed calender for the past year. They provided, installed and operated audio-visual equipment and services for school sportsdays, end-of-year sports dinners and recently, the fun day for the school’s 60th birthday celebrations.

It is however the functions inside the school auditorium like Mr and Miss MHS, the matric variety show, matric fashion show and the annual prize givings, which had every member of the crew occupied for hours with sound, lighting and seating arrangements.

Mr E. Beyers Eco Club The Eco Club has spread its wings this year. The society’s keen environmentalists have really shown their passion for nature, and their warm hearts, caring for the future of our planet. They collected resources for SANCCOB, participated in multiple beach clean-ups, assisted greening the school grounds, and dedicated time to planting on the premises. For Mandela Day, the Eco Club donated 67 Ecobricks to be used in greening projects.

A paradigm shift is needed to make our community environmentally conscious. The Eco Club is very excited to work together with the Green Portfolio to endeavour to make this happen at MSH.

Mrs C. Clulow Animation This small but dedicated team spent the year developing skills in Adobe Photoshop and learning some basic animation skills. Their drawings and ideas have inspired new projects for the coming year where the team will start painting classes again. We are also excited about the interaction with Triggerfish Animation Studios and the workshops that will be run in this regard.

We say good bye to our faithful matrics - Aleethea, Zara and Gianina. Thank you for your hours of service and passion for Animation in Milnerton High School.

In September, our new committee was elected and we wish them, together with the Interact team (staff and learners), everything of the best for the year ahead. May you succeed in warming the hearts of many and making a difference.

Mrs C. Clulow Cross Connection Cross Connection is a society for Christian learners at Milnerton High School. Learners from all denominations are invited to join the society and to worship and praise with their fellow learners. In conjunction with the Interact society, they also are afforded the opportunity to get involved in serving the community through various outreach projects.

Membership of Cross Connection therefore allows learners not only to grow spiritually but to become citizens who care for their fellow human beings. Learners are given the opportunity to determine the way in which they want to live out their spirituality, and guidance is being given by dedicated teachers. This year we had a lively group of members and many a learner has testified on how Cross Connection has changed and enriched their lives.

18 19 Debating

Debating teaches our learners to think critically and to question their preconceived notions of the world. At the Debating Dinner, the award for Best Newcomer to Debating was awarded to Dinovique Nsenga, Most Improved Speaker went to Sebastiao De Abreu, and Best All-round Contribution to Debating was awarded to Nikita Tucker.

We bid farewell to Sebastiao and Kelly who are in Matric and thank them for the significant contributions they have made in the space of only a year. We will miss them.

A special word of thanks to Ms Michaela Martins for all her expertise.

Every year in this society brings new challenges and adventures and I can’t wait to see what 2020 holds in store.

This year, the Librarians and Library Monitors worked very hard to make the Library's environment as good as it can be. Library Monitors Throughout the year, we accomplished several things. We conducted a thorough stock-take, after which we began applying a few effective shelf-management techniques. We introduced some of the highest-rated, best-selling books of 2019 and we purchased the suggestions of our regular users. We added some high quality study resources and greatly improved the past papers service, too.

Opening times are once again extended - the Library now opens at 07:30 almost every morning, and stays open until 16:30 every Tuesday and Thursday, allowing learners to utilise its resources more frequently.

20 Mrs E. Griffen Portuguese Language Society

We are so fortunate to have a new prize to award at the MHS Prize Giving. This new prize is for the Portuguese learner who contributes the most to South African society through Milnerton High School in terms of academics, culture and sport. The award is sponsored by CEPE África do Sul, Embassy of Portugal. Congratulations to our delighted 2019 recipients - Dominique Van Schalkwyk and Raphael De Sousa. They travel to Portugal in March next year to immerse themselves in the Portuguese language and culture for two weeks.

It is with Latin nostalgia that we say goodbye to our grade 12 members - we will miss them.

Culture @ MHS had another bumper year in 2019! The Culture Portfolio, ably lead by Hannah McClure, hosted a number of successful events including Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Heritage Day. All of these were well-supported and organised. Mr and Miss MHS was a further highlight. It was well-attended and enjoyed by all, and we congratulate the contestants and performers alike.

This year MHS returned to Grand West as part of the BSPHSJ inter schools competition. We produced a show called Home Again which Back: Amy Botes, Keagan Roe, Emily Münch Front: Leandrie Matthews, Hannah McClure, Ms L. Bosman, celebrated the things that make us feel at home. Adam Potgieter, Georgia Gerber It contained songs such as “Don’t Stop me Now”, “Hallelujah”, “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” and “The Crossing”, and although we did not take home the trophy, the show was enjoyed by all 350 learners on the stage as well as by the audience. A huge farewell to our stalwart matrics: Hannah, Tian, Deynique, Daniel, Milena, Nadia, Adam, Staci, Leandrie, Courtney and Neo. Thank you for your years of commitment and service. You will be missed.

24 Quiz Team

This year, the Quiz Team participated in some interesting events. Firstly, we took part in the 11th Cape Argus Food Lover's Market High School Quiz. In this quiz format, a team of four learners studies different sections of the five Cape Argus newspapers from a given week, and then competes against three other schools from around the the following Monday. This year, the teams had to study ten newspapers over two weeks. Despite having suffered several setbacks due to one or two team members who, every now and then, were unable to participate, the team managed to finish in the Top 32 of the Western Cape.

We also had the pleasure to host the third Elia Bordin, Declan Real, Zara Hartle, Sashin Gopaul, Mrs T. Bredell Inter-schools General Knowledge Quiz, competing against High, Bosmansdam High and High, with MHS emerging as the winner.

In addition, we organised an Interhouse Quiz for Term 3's Interhouse Sports event, which boasted extraordinary participation and support. The show-down between Sashin and Mrs Besener was exhilarating to observe, and the event was eventually won by Merriman.

This year has been fun and educational for all those involved - teachers and learners alike.

Mrs T. Bredell Business Studies Quiz This year we entered two teams into the Business Studies Quiz competition. We competed against schools like Elkanah, Kensington High and Modderdam High. Our two teams managed to secure both 2nd and 4th place. These learners have set the bar high for future quizzers!

This year the school band was made up of 90% first-time members. The challenge was to get all these newbies to come together and overcome all the obstacles on the road to Grand West. Thanks to all-round positive attitudes and the readiness to work hard, everyone made easy work of this task. The final highlight of the year was performing at the annual Fun Day where the atmosphere was a lot less tense and everyone could just enjoy it.

At the time of writing this report, two music students have their external Trinity exams in piano and violin within a week and are busy adding the final touches to their programmes. They will no doubt do the music department proud. Scarlett Pay deserves to be mentioned for having obtained a number of gold certificates for singing at the Eisteddfod under the guidance of her external vocal teacher.

Interest among MHS students to take music as a subject seems to be on the rise and next year, like 2019, promises to have a comparatively strong body of learners who will be wrapping their minds around intervals, triads, compound time signatures and the like.

28 Euro Trip

Twenty-seven learners and three teachers left South Africa to travel to Berlin, Prague, Paris, Belgium and Amsterdam and then safely returned without losing anyone!

We are so fortunate at Milnerton High School to travel with learners overseas and see the art and buildings studied in class in Design and Visual Art. My favourite is always seeing the delight and awe as a child stands before an original Van Gogh painting or sees how small the Mona Lisa actually is.

This year the tour included a historical angle when we travelled to Berlin and learnt about the struggles surrounding living in Berlin when the Wall was built. We walked through the grounds of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp very aware of the sombre mood and tragic stories surrounding the war.

The learners loved Prague and Paris and made many memories visiting the Eiffel Tower and running around Disneyland for a day.

We are looking forward to the next art tour in 2021 where we’ll be visiting London, Paris and Berlin.

34 35 Athletics

The Athletics team was honoured to be named the Sporting Discipline of the Year at the annual Sports Prize giving. This trophy is well-deserved as 13 of our athletes competed on provincial as well as national level. The year started with a successful Interhouse meeting where over 800 learners strutted their stuff. Morgan Cupido and Chelsea-Ann Rhode won the Junior and Senior Victrix Ludorum awards, while Alejandro Aldana and Yasser Hofmeyer were the two top boys. A team was selected after this event to proceed to the next level of competition. We beat Melkbos, Bosmansdam, Edgemead and Melkbos in the inter-schools competition, and our girls went on to win the Super A Zonal Championships – the first steps towards attaining Western Province colours. Forty-two athletes were selected for the Zone and competed at the WP Championships in Parow.

Our junior athletes excelled this year, with best performances by Olivia Park-Ross, Miah April, Chloe Terblanche, Luca Karsten, Zachary Bowles, Liam Josias and Yasser Hofmeyer. The following athletes qualified to represent Western province: Ava Zgerski, Megan Boshoff, Morgan Cupido, Deborah Chukwuka, Mia Zgerski, Lawon Hill, Lehara Naidu, Gina de Klerk, Cyriel Attekeble, Ryan Durler, Alejandro Aldana, Kyle Lendon and Robin Lund. Megan Boshof (Triple Jump), Deborah Chukwuka (Triple Jump), Robin Lund (3000, 5000, 3 000 Steeple Chase), Ryan Durler (800), Lawon Hill (100), Lehara Naidu (100mH) Alejandro Aldana (110mH) and Kyle Lendon (Javelin) competed at the respective South African Championships, with Kyle Lendon achieving the top position, placing 5th in South Africa. Robin, Alejandro and Kyle were awarded Colours with Honours for their outstanding excellence in track and field. It was truly a great season and we are very proud of the athletes.

The girls’ team has started off the 2019/2020 season by placing 9th in the Twizza Super School Championships against the best schools in the Western and Eastern Cape. The team placed top 40 in the country and has been selected to compete in the final national Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale taking place on the 1st of February 2020. The team is looking forward to the annual tour to Potchefstroom next week. Twenty-nine athletes will be competing in the Top 30 NWU Schools Athletics at the Northwest University-Potchefstroom campus.

Lastly we wish to thank our matrics for their dedication and commitment, as well as their service to the team. Seth, Robin, Kyle, Ryan, Alejandro, Cyriel and Caitlin - you will be sorely missed.

36 Cross Country The Cross Country team placed a close second to the Athletics team when the trophy for the Sporting Discipline of the Year was announced. These athletes trained very hard and reaped the rewards. The athletes competed in seven Table Bay and Southern Zone races, where most of them placed in the top 10 in their events. Ava Zgerski and Luca Karsten were impressive and proved themselves as two of the most promising junior runners.

At the Western Province Championships held at Fairmont High School, seven athletes were selected to represent the WP team to compete in the Western Cape Championships in Strand. These athletes were Asha Jack, Chloe Terblanche, Erin Crotz, Robin Lund, Mia Zgerski, Gina de Klerk and Luca Karsten. A big congratulations goes out to them.

Gina was selected for the Western Cape team to compete in the South African High Schools championships in Witrivier, Mpumalanga. She placed 14th in the G U17 4km event and her team placed 2nd in the team competition, resulting in Gina returning home with a silver medal. She was also selected for the WP ASA team where she was asked to run in the G U19 6km race, as part of the WP relay team. The team placed 4th, narrowly missing out on a medal.

Robin Lund was our most valuable Grade 12 runner. We will miss her next year and wish to thank her for her continued service to the Cross Country team.

Mrs N. Slabber

37 Swimming

Swimming at Milnerton High School has once again had a successful year. We boast five Western Province swimmers and one South African swimmer.

With our new Indoor Aquatic Centre complete, our swimmers can enjoy the waters for the full 12 months of the year. This will with no doubt increase our swimming numbers and im- prove our swimming results.

We had a very successful Term 1 with the following results: • Parklands Individual and Relay Galas - 1st • Gala - 1st • Milnerton Gala - 1st • Fairmont Gala - 2nd

This has resulted in us being placed in a higher league for the 2019/2020 swimming season.

Our Juniors have performed particularly well, with our U14 swimmers rarely placing out of the Top 3 in their races.

We are especially proud of Ethan Du Preez who is our South African representative. Ethan is currently training 7 days a week in his attempt to represent South Africa at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Mr L. Lloyd Equestrian

This year we had six riders competing regularly in the SANESA competitions and the WP graded competitions. Many of our riders performed superbly and were selected for the Cape Metro teams:

Dylan Binden (Jumping B and Working Hunter A); Emma Sims (Working Hunter and Equitation A); Jade van Schoor (Dressage, Jumping and Equitation A); and Nikita Loubser (Jumping, Equitation and Dressage A) Nikita Loubser was selected for the Western Cape Mounted Games team as well as the WC Pony Club team for three Back: Jade van Schoor, Rachel Christenson, Emma Sims, Dylan Binden disciplines in the U18 & U23 Front: Michaela Fiamoi, Mrs L. Besener, Nikita Loubser divisions.

Michaela Fiamoi competed at the Western Cape Pony Club Champs where she placed 1st for Dressage (novice); 2nd in open Equitation (1m) and 3rd in open Show Jumping (1m). As a result she was selected for the Western Cape Team. Our team comprising Dylan, Emma, Jade, Nikita and Rachel won Gold in the SANESA Category G for between 5-8 riders beating the nearest competition by 3790 points which is fantastic.

Well done to all the riders!

Mrs L. Besener 38 Cricket

During 2018-2019, our cricket teams once again produced excellent results at the highest level and we continued to establish ourselves as one of the leading cricketing schools in the Northern District. Our top teams performed well and our lower mid-week teams continued to contribute to the success of our sport and also produced good results.

We are extremely proud of Justin Behrens who was selected for the Western Province U17 Youth team and Christine Tomlinson who made the WP U19 Ladies’ team. We wish them the very best of luck for the upcoming season.

A special word of thanks must go to Mr Francios Koen, Mr Brett Nicols, Mr Passmore Sibiya, Mr Solomon Mamba and the rest of the team for their continued efforts in producing some of the best cricketing facilities in .

Finally, if you or your child is part of a sports team, then you know how much work the coach does to help each player grow and to lead the team to success.

It is for this reason that we congratulate and thank Mr Christopher Gibson for his tenure as the U19 Head Coach. Chris, your hard work, motivation and time has not gone unnoticed. Your team at Milnerton High School look forward to your continued support in a different capacity and wish you well in all your future endeavours.

The talent in the team is exceptional and we are so looking forward to seeing their development and growth in the years to come.

Our U14A & B teams as well as our U16A & B teams managed to win their matches and qualify for the finals.

In the finals, despite the hot weather conditions and the skilled opposition, Millies competed extremely well. While our U14B girls were knocked out early, we were very proud of our U14As who came 4th, our U16Bs who came 1st and our U16A team who came 3rd in their section resepctively.

A massive thank you to Hirsch’s who sponsored our U19A Girls’ match kit. Our players looked super smart and professional. We would also like to thank all of our coaches and staff who gave up so much of their time to coach this season. It is often a thankless task, and without them, netball would not be able to happen.

Both U14 and U15 sides achieved superb results, with the U15 side beating their counterparts for the first time ever. The future of rugby at MHS looks bright.

We can proudly announce another haul of 8 WP representatives for 2019, with our own coach, Bobby Martin, honoured to coach the WP Craven Week XV. Mrs B. Olsen 43 Girls’ Soccer

We will never forget that moment when we stood beside the field, watching the last few minutes of the last game of the season became the winning moment for the MHS Girls’ soccer team this year. The team finished their season scoring an exceptional 51 goals and conceding only 5. I am so incredibly proud of these girls because of their perseverance and attitude to excel.

As a team we will miss our matrics leaving us under the leadership of Casey Syms. We wish you the best in the years to come.

2019 has been more of a rebuilding year for our senior soccer team as last year we lost a few of our main pillars in the team who played in strategic positions for over two years. I am very grateful for our junior boys who stepped up and gave a good account of themselves.

We did get mixed results throughout the year, but our stand-out performance was when we edged Edgemead by a solitary goal at the 6th attempt.

The major highlight of our boys’ soccer teams for 2019 came from our U16 boys who won their league and hence qualified for the knock-out stage of the competition. We beat Pinelands in the quarter finals and then lost to Curro in the semis. Our young team is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come. 44 Hockey Hockey at MHS has grown from strength to strength thanks largely to the fact that we now have so much depth. This year we managed to field 14 teams (6 boys’ and 8 girls’ teams), and as they say, “competition breads excellence”.

Our B and C teams played some terrific hockey this Girls U19A year. They trained hard and Back: Mr C. Our A teams compete in leagues where the results are tabled. The girls achieved the following places: U14A girls came 3rd, U16A girls came 5th and U19A girls came 1st in the league.

The boys achieved the following places: U14A boys came 4th, the U16A boys came 5th and the U19A boys came 4th. This is a good improvement overall. Our boys’ teams especially have competed very well across the leagues, and if you look at the potential in the junior ranks, we can be very optimistic about what is to come in the future. The standout team is definitely the U19A girls who managed to win their league while playing some fantastic hockey.

We had a number of players represent WP or zonal teams:

SA High School Champs A definite highlight of the year was qualifying to compete in the SA High School Champs that were held in Modimolle. Murray Boast, Justin Behrens, Slade Strydom and Shea Byrne competed in the qualifying tournament held at Bellville Golf Club where we finished as the top school in the province in the strokeplay format. We then competed against the top 21 teams in the country and finished in 13th place – beating many top

schools. What a fantastic Golf 1st Team opportunity and Back: Sashwyn Naidoo, Liam Twine, Slade Strydom, Braden Pillay, Shea Byrne achievement. Front: Murray Boast, Mrs L. Besener, Justin Behrens

Leagues Our golf teams performed superbly this year with the A team finishing in 2nd place in the competitive Southern Sub- urbs Premier A League. They beat Bishops and Wynberg twice, and SACS, and Reddam at home. They qualified for the playoffs and won their match against de Kuilen by 5 - 1. The B team had a good season after being promoted to the B League and finished 4th in their league. Well done to both teams.

Tour Two teams (8 boys) undertook a very successful tour to George where they competed in the Kenako festival – competing against 19 teams from all over the country. They played at George Country Club, Kingswood Golf Club and Mosselbay Golf Club. This proved to be a fun outing with the boys gaining valuable experience.

Individual achievements Congratulations to Justin Behrens who had a successful stint in the WP U17 team, returning unbeaten at the interprovincial tournament. Well done. Jordan Pillay was selected into the WP girls’ team. She performed superbly and won a silver medal in the B division (handicaps 10 – 18). Murray Boast placed 2nd in both the Royal Cape Junior Open and the Parow Junior Open. He also came 8th in the Western Province Junior Open.

We look forward to an exceptional 2020 season.

Thanks to Mr Ochse for always being so willing to assist with golf tours – it is much appreciated.

Mrs L. Besener Chess This year was a tough year for the MHS chess team as we only had two senior players and lost some of our best junior players to the Grand West production. As a result we only won 4 of our 7 matches.

The chess team are very happy however to welcome five new chess players to the team. We were still able to beat some of our rival schools including and Curro Century City. Derby days were against Melkbos and .

For the Milnerton High eSports teams, 2019 was a year of making a name for ourselves in the eSports Scene. Our Counter-Strike: Global Offensive 1st team achieved fantastic results towards the close of the season. They won all their games in Term 3 and beat teams from all around South Africa, including Vereeniging Gim, Paul Roos, Monument High and many more. Our League of Legends 1st team far exceeded any of our expectations by achieving a spot in the top 8 teams in the school division. They not only Back: John Jones; Jake Pieterse; Dewald Coetzee 3rd row: Liam Hare; Cameron Varga; Matthew Arbous beat schools such as Reddam, 2nd row: Sian Durler; Mrs T. In addition to all this, two of our old Overwatch players, Matthew Arbous and Cameron Varga, were invited to compete in the South African Overwatch Championship, where only the top 15 teams in the whole of South Africa competed.

All-in-all, this year was a triumphant one for eSports and we all can’t wait to see what the future holds.

- Lloyd Dixon JSE Although the JSE encountered signs of recovery in the second half of 2019, the first half of the year has been one of the worst ones in recent history. This in turn, negatively affected the investor confidence, with many big companies Back: SimThembile Kosi, Michael Metcalf, Aedan Manual, Nicholas Fiamingo Middle: Rubainia Naidoo, Jerry Lin, Aviwe Makapela, Kirsten Prins, Ntsika Mdingi, experiencing a more than Jade Da Silver, Ayanda Goise 30% drop in their share Front: Declan Real, Sashin Gopaul, Mr H. Well done to all our representatives for 2019 and we look forward to a better 2020.

54 Matric 2019 The Jungle by Cassandra Demmer

Getting ready for the Jungle Here we come Drop & rollin from day one Being 14 when steppin on the scene Starting off in 2015

Auditioning for Grease All wanting a piece Making a name, in our first year Got no fear Let the world know, ‘hey we’re here’

Our first social was lit Not hard to admit As we danced and hit that cha cha slide

Having years of culture, diversity & being free Spilling that tea bout he or she Don’t lie to me I know you agree

Then the next years came & went Loving life then needing to vent People began finding themselves Pushing the old to the back of the shelf No more asking for help

There’ve been musicals, tours, showcases & sports days Relationships, couples & plenty of baes Kings & queens of 2019 are here to stay As we’re making history in the Jungle today

Over time we’ve lost but gained a few of you’s Some of us original, some of us no But the one thing that’s true Is that we are a Family

Sure it’s dysfunctional Sure it’s strange Yet we’ve come together & made a change

Now as Matrics We can look back & see That we’ve had winners & losers Change in our sea Because of people like you And people like me

Most of us were born in the 2000’s But are different from the rest Don’t relate with younger nor with older Cause we are the best

And to prove it to you I’m gonna take you back to That day of that hike When we discovered what Survivor is like We got lost on a mountain Our emotions were heightened Put aside any fightin And found our way to the gardens Where our moods finally lightened

66 Staff Round-up

“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” -- Albert Einstein

This year is a special one indeed: a jubilee, anniversary and birthday, a year that we are exceptionally proud of. Mil- nerton High School has grown from strength to strength over its 60 years. We are so proud of our staff and the many achievements they have accomplished this year both personally and professionally.

Congratulatory cheers

Milestones… What a special year it has been, wishing a Happy 60th Birthday to our much-loved husband and wife duo, Paul and Linda Besener, as well as to MHS itself!

Additions to the family… Congratulations to Janine Vissian on the birth of her daughter, Hati Murimbika on the birth of his son, and Passmore Sibiya on the birth of his daughter, all earlier this year. Daniella Berowsky welcomed another grandchild into the world this year too. May the little ones bring energy, pattering footsteps and giggles into your lives.

Love is in the air… Congratulations to Trudy Pentz (nee Hounsell) on her marriage this year, as well as Christopher and Mariska Gibson (nee Marx), who were married in September. Congratulations too to Lienkie Nel who got engaged in October. We wish all the happy couples many years of happiness, love and adventure together.

Strides and leaps of success… We congratulate staff members on fantastic personal and professional achievements! Our P.A., Nata Lundin, participat- ed in the World Dance Masters competition in Blackpool this year. Dancers from 30 countries took part. We congratu- late Nata on bringing home a Silver medal. Catherine Clulow was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship Award by Rotary in recognition of outstanding humanitarian and charity work over the past 24 years. Liam Lloyd umpired an indoor hockey tournament in Dublin, Ireland, as well as the Men’s Senior IPT in Bloemfontein. Lazola Matshobongwana be- came manager of the Western Province Rugby Academy Team. Heinrich Martin became the Rugby Western Province U18 Craven Week XV Team for 2019 coach, as well as advisor to the South African U18 Team. Laura Bosman has been cast in a Netflix Series called Blood and Water in which she plays a headmistress. We look forward to seeing her on our screens next year. Laura and Bryony Bosman, together with a number MHS learners, starred in the Pinelands Players’ production of Hairspray at the Artscape Theatre earlier this year.

Long Service Awards The following staff members’ loyal contributions to the school were acknowledged with these Long Service Awards: 35 Years – Linda Besener 25 years – Etienne Beyers 15 years – Aidan Pringle, Belinda Olsen and Michele Viljoen 10 years – Angela Snyman, Janine Vissian, Isabel Barros, Prosper Mushunje

Welcome to the Millies Family At the beginning of this year we have welcomed Alison Arlow, Michaela Martins, Daniel Childs, Sue Davis, Martilene Ellmann, Sandra de Sousa, and Jessica Henning (who took a temporary maternity post for Janine Vissian). It has been a great pleasure getting to know you all and we hope that your stay at Milnerton High School is a positive and enriching one. We also welcomed the familiar faces of Bryony Bosman, Roscoe Engel and Liam Lloyd to the staff. Mid-year saw some new faces as we welcomed Anna Bosman, John Dempers, Daniella De Pinto, and Xio-anne de Waal. More recently we have welcomed Johanette Berger to the Consumer Studies department. We also welcomed Forbes Manongovere and Lemson Kennedy to the maintenance team.

We bid them Farewell and everything of the best Mid-year we bid farewell to Simon and Marinette Shield, Tarryn Higham and Sandra Lynne, all headed abroad. Later in the year we bid farewell to Sandra de Sousa and as the year ends, we will bid Liam Lloyd farewell as he will be taking up a position at Milnerton Primary. We also bid farewell to Nicky Slabber, from teaching, though we will still see her friendly smile at all MHS athletics events. Lastly, a farewell to retiring staff, James Ochse and Christa Rossouw. Thank you to each of these individuals for their contributions to and involvement in the Millies family.

A huge thank you! Thank you to each and every staff member for your commitment and service in leading Milnerton and its successes. The roles you play and lives you touch do not go unnoticed and you are appreciated. Cheers to another awesome Mil- lies year! Wishing our MHS Family a safe and restful holiday!
