Over the past 60 years, MHS has seen growing recognition and accolades, a burgeoning number of learners and staff members, socio-political changes, technological developments, innovations in teaching and learning practices, and evolving infrastructure. This year’s magazine hopes to capture some of the dynamism and progress that has characterised the last six decades. Millies learners continue to make us proud with their achievements in all facets of school life. To the 2019 Matrics: You flew the banner high for MHS and we thank you for your investment in the school. We wish you only the best in your future endeavours! A big thank you to our superstar PR committee members for helping put this magazine together: Chloe Govender, Janelle Davids, Aqeelah Van Der Schyff, Tammy-Lee Bosman, Hannah Hartogh, Nikita Tucker and Liam Davids. Grateful thanks as ever to Mrs Clulow for her innovative ideas and creative flair, and Ms Martins for her fabulous photos. Thank you too to Leanne Evans, Jeremy Langdon and Sarah Bruckmann for the photography, design and printing respectively. 2020 holds much to look forward to for the Millies family! Ms F. Ferri 1 Principal's Message Sixty years is a substantial amount of time for a school to establish itself as a centre of excellence in a community. We are very proud of our school and the legacy that has been created in this time. The school plays a significant role in our community, providing learners with an excellent stepping stone into the real world, whether it be to tertiary institutions - both in South Africa and abroad - or on scholarship to other institutions to follow their dreams. This year we have attained a superb set of achievements, in the classroom, on the sports field and on the stage, which you will see in this edition. We celebrated our 15th year in a row 100% Matric pass rate, with some outstanding individual achievements. We are able to boast 17 international and 73 provincial sportsmen and women in our school, with an additional 130+ obtaining zonal colours. These learners have certainly shone their “light brightly”, and potentially carved out some fantastic careers in their field of choice, some to university in the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe and even one to the Ukraine (to study medicine!). We are very proud of all of them. Congratulations to the SGB for their expansive vision, and for “taking the plunge” to build the beautiful Aquatic Centre, which Artwork by Rebekah Pringle will be opened early next year, officially. It is going to add a whole new dimension to swimming in our school, and also to Physical Education – imagine a nice warm swim in the middle of winter! I would like to give my sincere thanks to the SGB, particularly to Robert Fish who “retires” at the end of the year. His dynamic leadership style will be missed! As an old boy, he built on tradition and made our school a better place. We sadly bid farewell to a number of teachers during the course of the year. Some were poached by New Zealand and one went to China and the other to the UK. It was the biggest turnover we’ve had in the staffroom since I started here as Principal in 2005. Mr Simon Shield and Mrs Marinette Shield set out on a new adventure in New Zealand. We will miss Simon’s energy and sense of humour, and Marinette’s caring and warm personality. Mrs Tarryn Higham also set sail for Kiwi shores. We will miss her competent and ultra-organised approach to everything she did. Ms Sandra Lynne headed for China. We will miss her witty personality and all the quips in the staffroom. We thank them all for the years of service and tireless work and effort they contributed to our school. More recently, Mrs Sandra de Sousa beat Brexit to settle in the UK. We thank her for all the hard work she put into the school in a comparatively short space of time. We wish all these Millies family members only the very best in their new endeavours. We also say goodbye to three teachers who are retiring at the end of the year: Mr James Ochse, Ms Christa Rossouw and Ms Nicky Slabber. During his 11 year tenure, James has made a tremendous contribution to the school, especially in the finance department. He has created a situation where we are able to offer what we do, tackle new projects, maintain our facilities, and continue to build new ones. Christa will retire from education after 23 years at Milnerton High School. She taught Afrikaans on both HL and FAL level at our school, served on the Code of Conduct Committee with distinction, and achieved excellent results over many years. We wish both James and Christa a long and happy retirement. During the course of June, Nicky’s retirement on the grounds of ill health was approved by the Education Department after 22 years at MHS. She will stay on as the Head of Athletics, which she loves, so I am very happy we are not formally saying farewell to such a loyal and dedicated staff member. We were very happy to welcome our new staff members to the Millies team. At the beginning

30 March2017 Dear Parent/Guardian NEWSLETTER 9/17 We have reached the end of a highly successful term. So much has been achieved and we have big dreams and plans for the remainder of the year. Allow me this opportunity to thank every dedicated educator, coach and learner for their hard work and commitment. It is wonderful to see the scale of participation and the level at which we are competing now. Sport and culture have gone from strength to strength. Add to that the excellent academic results we attained last year, and you have to agree that our school is blessed with exceptional learners, educators and parents. During a recent visit by the Curro Transformation and Diversity team, we were complimented on the friendliness of our learners and staff. They noticed how learners went out of their way to greet them and to assist where they could. We also often get compliments from visitors, who work with our learners, regarding their ability to think out of the box and come up with new ideas and solutions. Schools close on Friday, 31 March at 11:00. Reports will be issued to learners on this day. Term 2 starts on Wednesday, 19 April. Educators already start on Tuesday, 18 April. Enjoy a well-deserved break with your children. May God keep you safe and may you experience a blessed Easter. STAFF MATTERS We wish to congratulate Mr Christiaan Botha who attended the North-West University of Potchefstroom’s graduation ceremony to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Education (BEd). Congratulations to Mrs Mariëtte Viljoen whose daughter, Obie, had a baby girl earlier this week.

  • 21 April 2017 Dear Parents Welcome Back. I Trust You Have All Enjoyed
21 April 2017 Dear Parents Welcome back. I trust you have all enjoyed the longer-than-normal Easter holiday and, like your sons, are ready for the unique challenges of the second term. I addressed the boys at the last assembly of the first term, emphasising the fact that they will need to exercise all their skills of prior planning, goal-setting (in all aspects of school life) and time-management, very well. In addition, a strong work ethic will be required in order to have a fulfilling academic, sporting and cultural term, which will be disrupted by next week’s long weekend. Your sons will require strong support, as usual, from yourselves and I trust that this will be an enjoyable term for all. A large number of rugby and hockey teams represented SACS at a number of pre-season Easter festivals during the break. I wish to thank the staff and boys for sacrificing hard-earned holiday time in order to establish a solid foundation for the Winter sporting season. I am confident that these tours will prove beneficial. I also thank the parents who supported our lads across the length and breadth of our county. Messrs Peverley, Grobler, van Zyl, Barnard and Willows accompanied the hockey teams, whilst Messrs van Selm, Maurer, Wepener, O’Connor, Molnar and Southgate went to the various rugby festivals. Thank you to all of them. FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER – 3/2015 2 October 2015 From the Headmaster At the end of Term 3 2015, I pay tribute to the different role players at the College: The Governing Body: Under the leadership of Mrs Prinsloo, the new Governing Body is looking after the interests of the parents, the learners and the staff. The Parents: It is enjoyable to interact with parents at all levels: next to the sport fields, at cultural functions, at the parent\teacher meetings and during one to one interviews. Please continue to support your children in all aspects of schooling. The Staff: I could not wish for better! The academic staff are dedicated workers who leave no stone unturned in pursuit of the College ethos of academic excellence and discipline. Also in all the other spheres of school life: pastoral, sport and culture – the staff put the interests of the learners first. The Support Staff: The receptionists, secretarial staff, school bursar, estate manager and the general workers are hard workers who always give their best. Time and time again I receive compliments of the efficiency of the front office. Our estate and sport facilities are the envy of many visiting schools. The Learners: The majority of learners are at one with the ethos of Fairbairn College. There will always be a small group of learners who have not taken ownership of “their” school. These learners are monitored closely. They will not be allowed to infringe on the rights of the learners who want to learn, or be allowed to tarnish the name of this fine institution.

  • Newsletter #9 2019
Newsletter #9 2019 1 March 2019 Dear Parents, On Wednesday, we held the Governing Body By-Election. Congratulations to Mrs. Shamiso Nyoka, mother of Cherise in Grade 9, and also to Mr. Ashley Holling, father of Dominic in Grade 9 on their election to the Camps Bay High School SGB. “WHAT IF” File Can I commend to you this article on the need for a “What If file”? We were reminded again with the tragic death of one of staff members, Nicky van Rooyen, of the need to have these vital documents together. The Importance of Creating a What If File for When a “What If” Moment Strikes. It's the month of love and load shedding has started again! So, here's how to use the downtime when you have no electricity to do something meaningful --- get your What If File in order. So, what's a What If file, I hear you say? Read on or skip forward to watch the TV interview I did on the topic recently. Preparing for the unexpected and for potential disruptions in life, through death, is a tough conversation to have. But, the honest truth is, all of us will be faced with a ‘what if’ moment at some stage, when a loved one unexpectedly falls ill or dies. When you find yourself in such a position, the last thing you want is to start searching for important documents from scratch, especially when you are in shock or in a highly emotional state. Love each other and yourself enough to get your admin and paperwork in order before a ‘What If’ moment unexpectedly strikes.
