Walsh Times WINTER 2020 ❘ 8 Interdisciplinary Institutes Connect Scholarship and Community through Service, Research

As universities across the country reimagine their role and purpose in the world, Walsh University is building a bridge from academic life to the community through interdisciplinary institutes that serve as a springboard for scholarly research and resourceful solutions. As the digital age of social media continues to broadcast a steady stream of news into our daily lives, the existence of the campus “bubble” isolating young adults has dissolved. Now, more than ever, automation and technological advancements have transformed traditional career pathways and challenged the very existence of trusted occupations deemed secure professions for graduates. Universities are forging a new life in their role as hubs of innovation, working with community partners to link smart people with sophisticated research in the pursuit of the common good. Whether it is local, global or both, through the University’s five interdisciplinary institutes, Walsh students and faculty are breaking down the traditional barriers between town and gown by creating real world solutions to issues of food insecurity, healthcare, civic engagement and economic development. The Institutes are purposefully collaborative across all majors, minors and professional backgrounds. Walsh University has launched five interdisciplinary research institutes since 2016.

Walsh Times WINTER 2020 ❘ 14 2018 – 2019 Honor Roll of Donors

2018 – 2019 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

With Heartfelt Gratitude for Your Support The Christmas season has concluded and a new decade has begun. In the spirit of gratitude, and on behalf of Walsh University, I extend our heartfelt appreciation to all of our alumni, friends, families and community members who continue to offer their support of the Walsh experience. We have so much to look forward to in 2020. We will officially install our seventh president, Tim Collins, with a formal inauguration ceremony August 26 and begin celebrations to mark Walsh’s 60th Anniversary. We initiated and accomplished several campus projects over the past year including the Bill Rambo Admissions Center, technology upgrades and expanded safety enhancements. Before they were even completed, we were already in the design process of several new campus beautification projects, fully funded, including the new Founders Plaza, Alumni Patio and the new Global Learning Center Patio, all through the support of our generous donors. We began the academic year with the successful President’s Challenge, which raised more than $32,000 for an immediate impact on the Walsh mission. We are in the midst of preparing for our April 7 Day of Giving campaign as we continue the momentum through the blessing of support from our Walsh Board of Directors, faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends, and our hometown community. We conclude the Bicentennial celebrations of our founding order, the Brothers of Christian Instruction, reminded that the inspiration for our hard work continues with preparing our students to be leaders in service to others. With every new initiative, our focus is to ensure that all students, regardless of financial conditions, have access to the high quality, values-based education at Walsh University. One of the best ways we can assist students on their journey is through scholarship support and a direct gift to the Walsh Fund. With 98 percent of our students relying on some form of financial aid, we will continue to focus our efforts on ensuring that a Walsh University education is attainable. We must also continue to pursue new endeavors to live our Catholic faith, enhance the Walsh University student experience, develop relevant academic programming and continue to ensure the legacy of our founding order. On behalf of Walsh University, Cav Nation wishes you all a joyful and prosperous 2020. Swords Up!

Eric Belden THANKVice President, Advancement YOU

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Walsh University is guided by a Board of Directors made up of dedicated individuals with unique leadership experience from various backgrounds in education, business, politics and service organizations. Walsh’s Board Members represent a diverse mix that includes the Brothers of Christian Instruction, the Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, business leaders, financial experts, religious clergy, judges, attorneys, community partners, education professionals and alumni. As a unified Board, members combine their expertise to review the activities of the University while carefully balancing future development with the Brothers’ founding vision. As committed custodians of Walsh’s mission, it is the Board’s responsibility to oversee the strategic direction of the University, define administrative roles, monitor committees and approve annual accounts and budgets. But most importantly, it is the Board’s duty to preserve and promote Walsh’s Catholic Heritage and founding traditions that have made our University the choice of more than 22,000 students for nearly 60 years.
