Does that make everyone a hybridized American, or do these elements find mediation within the other cultures that consume them? Fabricating the Absolute Fake applies concepts of postmodern theory – Baudrillard’s hyperreality and Eco’s “absolute fake,” among others – to this globally mediated American pop culture in order to examine both the phenomenon itself and its appropriation in the Netherlands, as evidenced by such diverse cultural icons as the Elvis-inspired crooner Lee Towers, the Moroccan-Dutch rapper Ali B, musical tributes to an assassinated politician, and the Dutch reality soap opera scene. Fabricating the Absolute Fake is a fascinating exploration of how global cultures struggle to create their own “America” within a post-9/11 media culture. Stevie just cannot “shut the f*ck up” and is still saying “I want to thank…” when the credits of the televised Grammy Awards show are rolling. As a Dutch teenager, back in 1983, I loved Eddie Murphy and Stevie Wonder, not yet realizing that these American entertainers (and many others) helped to make “America” an integral part of my own culture. Now twenty-fi ve years later, as I write these acknowledgments, the image of Eddie Murphy “do- ing Stevie at the Grammy’s” keeps popping up in my mind.     Introduction to Global Music The Center for European Studies (CES) and other Area Studies Centers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are collaborating with the student-run radio station WXYC in the production of the Global Music Show. This monthly hour-long program features music from a particular area of the world combined with commentary by guest scholars, who discuss the music played in the context of the culture and history of the region that produced it. To support cultural learning, CES has created student listening guides, pre- and post-listening discussion questions, and resource links for each of their Global Music programs. The programs run about one hour, and so listening and discussion would work well for block schedule classes. If your class runs the traditional hour length, you can have the class listen over two periods, and then discuss. Alternatively, you can assign the listening for homework, and hold the discussion during class time. Music can teach us much about a culture that never appears in a textbook. Use these programs and teaching resources to connect your students with European cultures in a dynamic, new way. Encourage students to continue their exploration of Europe through music.     PHYSICAL REVIEW RESEARCH 2, 013372 (2020) Dynamics of bacterial populations under the feast-famine cycles Yusuke Himeoka * and Namiko Mitarai † The Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Blegdamsvej 17, Copenhagen, 2100-DK, Denmark (Received 15 October 2019; accepted 3 March 2020; published 27 March 2020) Bacterial populations in natural conditions are expected to experience stochastic environmental fluctuations, and in addition, environments are affected by bacterial activities since they consume substrates and excrete various chemicals. We here study possible outcomes of population dynamics and evolution under the repeated cycle of substrate-rich conditions and starvation, called the “feast-famine cycle,” by a simple stochastic model with the trade-off relationship between the growth rate and the growth yield or the death rate. In the model, the feast (substrate-rich) period is led by a stochastic substrate addition event, while the famine (starvation) period is evoked because bacteria use the supplied substrate. Under the repeated feast-famine cycle, the bacterial population tends to increase the growth rate, even though that tends to decrease the total population size due to the trade-off. Analysis of the model shows that the ratio between the growth rate and the death rate becomes the effective fitness of the population. Hence, the functional form of the trade-off between the growth and death rate determines if the bacterial population eventually goes extinct as an evolutionary consequence. We then show that the increase of the added substrate in the feast period can drive the extinction faster. Overall, the model sheds light on nontrivial possible outcomes under repeated feast-famine cycles.
