SOUTH SIDE Rules

1. Must be current USHPA and UHGPGA member. Pilots are to display a current UHGPGA sticker on the right side of their helmet. Flying while not a member places the site in jeopardy, a violation of USHPA SOP 12-7, which is punishable by temporary or permanent revocation of ratings.

2. Must have a current H-2/P-2 or higher USHPA rating. Students & H-1/P-1’s must be under the supervision of an UHGPGA/POMIC approved instructor.

3. The “Ridge Rules” establish right-of-way and are to be followed at all times (see below for complete rules).

4. The hang glider launch/landing area is the area from the west of the gash (in front of the parking lot) to the center red/green flag. This area is to be kept clear whenever hang gliders are set up or flying. Absolutely no kiting in this area when hang gliders are present.

5. The center flag serves as an informal indicator of conditions. Any POMIC approved instructor, UHGPGA club officer, USHPA instructor, observer, or examiner has the right to change the flag color on the main flag (in the launch area). Green means “general flying” and as such pattern rules MUST BE FOLLOWED! Fly the Pattern and land your glider in the proper zone (hang gliders on the East side of the center flag, Paragliders on the West). Red flag signifies no student flying and H3/P3 or above strongly recommended. Pilots remaining in the air must still follow ridge rules, but the window is open for discretion flying (acro, sliders, kiting on the edge, etc. CAUTION: NEWER AND LESS EXPERIENCED PILOTS SHOULD PROBABLY NOT BE FLYING WHEN THE RED FLAG IS UP.

6. When the green flag is out, advanced pilots can engage in discretion flying while adhering to ridge soaring and right of way rules. This must occur outside the “pattern flags.” So, advanced pilots play to the east or west of the border flags, outside of the general flying pattern.

7. Launch Box: Imagine a box running the length of the South Side ridge 15 feet from the edge of the hill (see the diagram below). This is the launch box. The launch box is just that, once you are at the edge you are going to launch when the green flag is out. NO KITING, NO SLIDERS in this area. If you are at the lip, launch! If you see someone in the box, be aware, they are trying to launch. If you want to kite on the lip or play around, go outside of the Pattern Marker flags.

8. Before launching, make sure you are clear of traffic and yell “Clear” or “Launching”

9. Landing areas are to be kept clear AT ALL TIMES. As soon as you land pick up your wing and clear the landing area. As you clear the LZ, stay alert to incoming landings. Absolutely no kiting in designated landing areas. Kiting is allowed on the upper gravel plateau. Vehicles are not permitted in landing areas AT ANY TIME, no matter how brief.

10. Paraglider only – USHPA recommends max. speed of 18 mph for P-2, and 22 mph for P-3.

11. Helmets must be worn whenever you are attached to a glider.

12. No take offs or landings with motors on club or park property. The South Side Flight Park reaches from the paved road up to the westernmost flag out at the slide. Motor pilots please stay clear of the flight park when under power.

13. All Utah State Parks rules and regulations apply and must be followed.

NORTH SIDE RULES

Students & H-1/P-1 pilots must be under the supervision of an UHGPGA/POMIC approved instructor.

3. The “Ridge Rules” establish right-of-way and are to be followed at all times (see below for complete rules).

4. Before launching, make sure you are clear of traffic and yell “Clear” or “Launching”.

5. Aerobatics/maneuvers are strongly discouraged at the Point, and are STRICTLY prohibited above or in proximity of houses, or within 300 ft of the grass.

6. On the North Side, paragliders can land on the grass, but must yield to people on the ground. If the grass area is too populated to land safely, use the hang glider landing area. The hang glider landing area is to the West of the flight park (past the grass). If you land in the hang glider landing area, check for traffic then quickly clear the area. Kiting is strictly prohibited in, and upwind of, the hang glider landing area. See attached photo for clarification.

7. Paraglider only USHPA recommended max. wind speed is 18 mph P-2 and 22 mph P-3.

8. There will be NO USE OF MOTORS at or around the North Side Flight Park.

9. Helmets must be worn whenever you are attached to a glider.

10. The dirt road past the bathrooms is only to be used by instructors driving to the upper launches. Only the road closest to the “back bench” is to be used. Instructors must make sure the landing pattern is clear before proceeding past the bathrooms. There is absolutely no stopping or parking on the dirt road, particularly not in the first 100 yards beyond the flight park. The gate to the upper launch MUST be locked each time you pass through it to ensure continued access to the upper launches.

11. All Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation rules and regulations apply and must be followed. Page 3 of 4 Utah Hang Gliding and ParaGliding Association Rules Rev. 02/08/2011

Rules of the Ridge

When traveling opposing directions, pass to the right (just like driving a car). Pilot on the “inside” with the ridge to their right has right-of-way.

Lower pilot has right of way.

First pilot in a sets the turn direction. When entering a thermal with other pilots already in it, you must yield to them (don’t push them out of the thermal). If multiple pilots are in the same thermal, the lowest pilot sets turn direction (and higher pilots must match).

Always, Always, ALWAYS clear your turns. See, be seen, and avoid.

If you are overtaking someone going the same direction as you, pass between the pilot and the ridge (as long as it is safe to do so).

Do not pin other pilots against the ridge. If a pilot is between you and the ridge, make sure they have enough room to turn out away from the ridge if they need to.
