    Roshan Ara Begum Performing Classical Music, Gender, and Muslim Nationalism in Pakistan Fawzia Afzal-Khan The performance — or lack thereof — of (North Indian) classical music in Pakistan, and espe- cially the obstacles women performers have faced, cannot only be blamed on Islam’s putative hostility to the musical and performing arts in general and to women performing in public in particular. Rather, the discourse of a religiously inflected nationalism collides with gendered, classed bodies within the performative space of a political imaginary such that the role played by music both constitutes and deconstructs this history. Women singers’ roles are crucial in Fawzia Afzal-Khan is University Distinguished Scholar/Professor of English at Montclair State University and Visiting Professor at NYU Abu Dhabi. She is the author of Cultural Imperialism: Genre and Ideology in the Indo-English Novel (Penn State Press, 1993), A Critical Stage: The Role of Secular Alternative Theatre in Pakistan(Seagull Press, 2005), and Lahore with Love: Growing Up with Girlfriends Pakistani Style (Syracuse University Press, 2010); and editor of The PreOccupation of Postcolonial Studies (Duke University Press, 2000) and Shattering the Stereotypes: Muslim Women Speak Out (Interlink Books, 2005). One of our objectives is the collection of bibliographical information on all substantial writings on Hindustani music and dance produced in this region c.1700-1900, primarily in Sanskrit, Brajbhasha/Hindavi, Persian, and modern Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and English. We have been overwhelmed by the number of unique musical writings we have found so far – over 300 and counting. Information about and (where possible) digital copies of these are being collated into a database called SHAMSA: Sources for the History and Analysis of Music/Dance in South Asia,4 which will be made available to the general public for consultation in 2016. In this paper I will present one set of findings from an initial analysis of some of these writings on Hindustani musical culture, particularly manuscripts in the Persian language; Persian, although obsolete in India now, was the official language of both the Mughal empire and its successors, including the British, until well into the 1800s.5 One of the changes in the way Hindustani music was written about beginning in the mid eighteenth century was an 1 Formerly known as Katherine Butler Brown.

Nobility , 'Arkan-i-Daullat' (Pillars of Empire) generally indicates'the'class of people, who were holding hi^h position and were the officers of the king as well as of the state. This ruling elite constituting of various ethnic group based on class, political sphere. In Indian sub-continent they served the empire/state most loyally and obediently specially under the Great Mughals. They not only helped in the expansion of the Empire by leading campaign and crushing revolt for the consolidation of the empire, but also made remarkable and laudable contribution in the smooth running of the state machinery and played key role in the development of social life and composite culture. Mughal Emperor Akbar had organized the nobility based on mgnsabdari system and kept a watchful eye over the various groups, by introducing local forces. He had tried to keep a check and balance over the activities, which was carried by his able successors till the death of Aurangzeb. During the period of Later Mughals over ambitious, self centered and greedy nobles, kept their interest above state and the king and had started to monopolies power and privileges under their own authority either at the court or in the far off provinces.
