I owe you, big time. iv ABSTRACT This audience reception study qualitatively examines women who identify as both domestic violence survivors and fans of true crime podcasts. Using a feminist, critical cultural lens, this study explores why these women are drawn to these podcasts and how the content presented intersects with their lived experiences as domestic violence survivors. Employing a multi-method approach, I interviewed 16 women who listen to true crime podcasts and identify as domestic violence survivors as well as six hosts/producers of true crime podcast media and conducted an in-depth narrative analysis on one of the most popular podcasts mentioned by my participants. Sixteen in-depth qualitative interviews with audience members reveal six major themes: love of a good story, uniqueness of audio media, the educational value of true crime podcasts, connection to lived experiences, the potential therapeutic role of true crime narratives, and the community connections forged by listening to true crime podcasts. Through in-depth qualitative interviews with six true crime podcast hosts, this study also examines the political economy of podcast production, the atypical interactions that these hosts have with domestic violence survivors in their audiences, and how they are working with their audience members to present a counter-narrative to create awareness and improve understanding while simultaneously empowering victims to seek assistance and shed the stigma of shame that is prevalent for victims in our society. Combining qualitative interviews with a narrative analysis of the COLD podcast, the top podcast mentioned by participants that covers a domestic violence case, I examine v the narrative structure of COLD, unpack the intended and stated storylines, juxtapose the stated themes with the counter-narratives that emerged, and interrogate how COLD measures up to what my participants defined as a “favorite” true crime podcast. I also explore the production decisions that were made and the impact those decisions had on the final product by combining insights from my interview with the host of COLD and the narrative analysis of the podcast. Ultimately, I found that the female domestic violence survivors in true crime podcast audiences are using this emerging media in unprecedented ways and challenging the patriarchal nature of the criminal justice system and media’s traditional coverage of domestic violence. The study of folksonomy, as a way to socially-network communities, and wise crowd theory, the belief that community solutions can be stronger than those of experts, creates an opening for the complication of critical pedagogy. My project uses feminist pedagogical scholarship focused on disruption and resting in uncertainty as a springboard to reposition folksonomy and wise crowd theory as feminist praxis working toward the inclusion of difference in community. Four body chapters focus on defining, outlining, and showing the results of two folksonomic qualitative studies. Chapter Two, “Folksonomy as a Social System of Knowledge-Making,” begins by defining “social network,” before describing the rhetorical implications of different naming systems enforced through the “tagging” that takes place through social networking. The chapter highlights the issues inherent in the uses of folksonomic spaces and argues the tyranny of the majority has the potential to eclipse if not silence minority voices. Chapter Three, “Folk, Nomos, and Kairos: Folksonomy as a Feminist Enterprise,” interrogates the “wisdom of the crowd” model for knowledge building.

    Chapter 1 THE FEMINISM AND FOUCAULT DEBATE: STAKES, ISSUES, POSITIONS eminists disagree about the usefulness of Foucault’s work for feminist theory and practice. Some feminists advocate a Foucauldian feminism, while others Fargue that the underlying assumptions of feminism are antithetical to Fou- cault’s theoretical framework.1 The question about whether or not Foucault’s work is useful for feminism is situated within the larger debate about the com- patibility of a postmodern approach with an emancipatory, progressive politics.2 Proponents of postmodernism see it as essential to a progressive politics. They claim that traditional notions of political unity, rights, and freedom carry norma- tive implications that foreclose certain questions about who is included in the po- litical process and that this foreclosure may result in systematic exclusion. Proponents of progressive politics, on the other hand, claim that postmodernism undermines the very possibility of a progressive, emancipatory politics mainly be- cause of its rejection of normative concepts.3 In an article entitled, “Why Post- structuralism is a Dead End for Progressive Thought,” Barbara Epstein claims, “the underlying assumptions of poststructuralism conflict with the assumptions that are necessary for radical politics.”4 Epstein is particularly concerned with feminist poststructuralism, which she claims is amoral and “is a campaign against the basic structures of thought and language.”5 She is not alone in her condem- nation of poststructuralism.     Zodiac: The Eco-thriller Neal Stephenson ABOUT THE AUTHOR Neal Stephenson issues from a clan of rootless, itinerant hard-science and engineering professors. He began his higher education as physics major, then switched to geography when it appeared that this would enable him to scam more free time on his university's mainframe computer. When he graduated and discovered, to his perplexity, that there were no jobs for inexperienced physicist-geographers, he began to look into alternative pursuits such as working on cars, agricultural labour and writing novels. His first novel, The Big U, was published in 1984 and vanished without trace. Zodiac: The Eco- thriller is his second novel. On first coming out in 1988 it quickly developed a cult following among water-pollution-control engineers and was enjoyed, though rarely bought, by many radical environmentalists. The highly successful Snow Crash was written between 1988 and 1991, as the author listened to a great deal of loud, relentless, depressing music. It was followed by the equally successful The Diamond Age. Most of his novels are available in Roc. Neal Stephenson lives in Seattle. I find that Koenig uses more creaky voice on her podcast Serial than in an interview context. Additionally, her creaky voice in the interview occurs in specific contexts related to her work as a journalist. Based on analyses of how phonetic features can construct certain personae, I argue that Koenig may be designing her speech to construct a journalistic persona with her use of creaky voice. 1 Introduction Podcasts are episodic audio series that are typically downloaded and streamed. In purely auditory mediums like podcasts and radio, hosts must connect with their audience through only their voice. While there are many linguistic studies about radio and radio hosts (e.g., Rodero 2014), there are very few studies on the language of podcasting and podcast hosts. In 2014, the creators of the popular American radio show This American Life uploaded the first episode of the podcast Serial, created and hosted by journalist and radio personality Sarah Koenig. Years after its initial release, Serial holds the record for the most listened to podcast of all time and had been downloaded over 320 million times as of its third season in late 2018 (Quah 2018).
