Spring 2020 First Week Assignments **Textbook information for your courses can be found through the "Buy Books" link on DrexelOne, or on the Campus Bookstore site (http://drexel.bncollege.com)** Please note that the majority of exams will have computer access restrictions that will prohibit you from accessing electronic versions of textbooks. Course Title Instructor First Assignments (to be completed before first class) LAW 555S 001 Legislation and Regulation Abu El-Haj, Tabatha A First read Casebook pp. 1-3 Based on what you have read so far, write out in a few sentences each: 1) the best argument that the ban on vehicles includes tricycles, and 2) the best argument that the ban on vehicles does not include tricycles. After you have done that, finish reading Casebook pp. 4-27. Did your personal views about whether tricycles are covered by the statute change after you read the legislative history? If so, please note particular events from legislative history that seem relevant to the interpretation. (We will come back to this legislative history in later classes as well, so it might be useful to flag or keep notes on the key turns in your mind.) Do you think that the No Vehicles in the Park statute would benefit from being administered by an administrative agency or commission? Can you think of statutes that might? LAW 555S 002 Legislation and Regulation Frankel, Richard H There will be a mandatory introductory class on Monday, January 6, from 12:15-1:15. This is the time ordinarily reserved for Dean Scholar sessions, and it will be in the Room 140. The purpose of this session is to introduce the course structure and goals, go over the syllabus, and to do introductions. The only assigned reading is a Washington Post article about one of the most significant cases before the U.S. Supreme Court this term – one that involves numerous issues related to statutory interpretation. We will use this case throughout the semester to explore and analyze various units of the course. In addition, to allow me to get to know you a little better, I am asking you to fill out a “Help me learn about you” assignment. Both the assignment and the newspaper article will be emailed to you and will be available on Blackboard. You can submit your response to me either by email, or on Blackboard. Please submit your assignment by noon on Monday, January 6. Please be aware that the class is a mandatory class, and your absence will be treated like any other class absence.
