I’m sorry about that, Alex. It won’t happen again, I promise. Issue Number 162 • October 2011 www.modelcarsmag.com We have some great new kits out this year. Revell’s new 1/12 scale Mustang ISSN: 15274608 Shelby GT500 is on my bench as I speak, and the new Moebius Hudson Hornet has also just hit my workbench. Bill Coulter and Len Carsner have Publisher Larry Bell beaten us all to the punch with their knockout build and review of this great Editor Gregg Hutchings new kit, and I’m sure we’ll see tons of other builds on our forum and web site [email protected] within the new few months, if not next few weeks! Art Director Harry Pristovnik John Oszajca For me, of course, I love the new 1/12 Shelby GT500, due to the fact that I Marketing Director [email protected] had a nice new 2010 Mustang GT Convertible for the last year and a half. Had? What’s that? Another new car? Well, it’s not what you think. I don’t Associate Editors have my own private jet and all that, it’s more that Kelly and I were filling Dave Pye [email protected] Darryl Gassaway up the Mustang every five days, and that was not fun anymore. Yes, it was a [email protected] great fun car, especially with the top down and cruising around, but I was Photo Editor Doug Whyte not able to enjoy those far and few days like I should be able to. So, I Copy Editor Paul Anagnostopoulos ditched the Mustang in favor of a new hybrid Ford Fusion. It’s nice, Circulation Director Sherri Simpson but…yawn… (877.463.3127 toll-free or 303.296.1600 for subscriptions) Anyway, the new Moebius Hudson Hornet is really cool. I will probably Joe Simpson make mine a sleek custom, and I’m sure a lot of others will as well. It builds Production Manager into a nice replica stock version, as you can see by Bill and Len’s feature in Production Auggie Velasquez this issue. I’m also building the Moebius new International Lonestar in Candy Apple Red, which will be wearing some of those cool aluminum rims Contributing to this issue: I featured from MicroNut.com a little while ago. I have also laid down the paint on the new Trumpeter Falcon Convertible, Tim Ahlborn Larry Greenberg Tamiya Pearl Green, with a two-tone brown/light brown interior. Tim Boyd Mike Lomaka Len Carsner Wayne Moyer Scott Colmer Mark Taylor Yes, I’m building more, isn’t that Bill Coulter Sergey Torkhov what we’re supposed to be doing? Learn about the International Model Car Builders’ Museum! e International Model Car Builders’ Museum was founded in 1987 to preserve the history of the scale vehicle hobby. Before the Museum opened its doors, early leaders of the Museum spent years acquiring historical information, letters between hobby person- alities, collections of the famed magazines of the Sixties as well as obtaining models built by historic builders whose craftsmanship helped dene the hobby. From the earliest days of the Museum, one chief goal of the eort was to gather together the largest possible collection of information, models, artifacts and documents so that hobbyists and schol- ars, decades in the future, would have a central place to research the wonderful history of the great model car hobby. In 2000, the Museum moved to a 1,200 square foot facility organized by subject matter, and a very substantial in Sandy, Utah. At the new location, there was nally collection of vintage and contemporary paints, adhesives, enough room to unpack the many historic items previously putties and Auto World items were nally unpacked and purchased or donated. The Insight can be identified by its aerodynamic shape and rear fender skirts, as illustrated on the front cover, and by the Insight logo and the words “Gasoline-Electric Hybrid” on the rear hatch. The chassis and most components are made of aluminum, some parts are plastic, and a few are made of magnesium. Gasoline Engine The Insight’s main power source is a conventional 1.0 liter, 3- cylinder gasoline engine, located under the hood. Electric Motor During start-up and acceleration, the gasoline engine is assisted by an ultra-thin (2.3 inch/60mm wide) electric motor, located between the engine and the transmission. During braking and Gasoline Engine Electric Motor 12V Battery deceleration, the motor acts as a generator to recharge the high- voltage battery and the 12-volt battery. Turning the ignition switch to either the Accessory (I) or the Lock (0) position turns off the gasoline engine and the electric motor.

  • Aurora Models, Garage Kits and the Object Practices of Horror
Materializing Monsters: Aurora Models, Garage Kits, and the Object Practices of Horror Media Bob Rehak Figure 1 The July 1962 issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland carried an advertisement for a new product from Aurora Plastics Company: a scale model of Frankenstein’s Monster (Figure 1). Announcing the first in what would become a long-running and profitable line of Aurora kits based on classic horror-movie creatures, the ad copy, running beside an exploded view of the model’s individual parts alongside a finished and painted version, emphasized rather than elided the steps required to make it whole: YOU ASKED FOR IT — AND HERE IT IS: A COMPLETE KIT of molded styrene plastic to assemble the world’s most FAMOUS MONSTER — 2 Frankenstein! A total of 25 separate pieces go into the making of this exciting, perfectly-scaled model kit by Aurora, quality manufacturer of scale model hobby sets. The FRANKENSTEIN MONSTER stands over 12-inches when assembled. You paint it yourself with quick-dry enamel, and when finished the menacing figure of the great monster appears to walk right off the GRAVESTONE base that is part of this kit. Taken with its insistent second-person you, the text’s avowal of “kit-ness” suggests that the appeal of monster models stemmed not just from their iconic content, but the way they promised to transform readers into modelers in a mutually reinforcing relationship of agency, much as the otherwise static and nonarticulated plastic monster would appear to “walk right off” its base. • History of Airfix Plastic Model Kit Instruction Sheets
History of Airfix Plastic Model Kit Instruction Sheets As a relative novice to collecting instruction sheets, I'm not sure as to the exact 'types' of instruction sheets (in the style of type 0, 1, 1a as with the header cards), but I know the style and format of the instructions has changed over the years. I am mainly concerned with the instruction sheets from boxed kits, less colourful than the header cards, but just as interesting to collect, and come in infinitely more styles and variants. I guess these sheets also have 'type' categories and perhaps someone could clue me in as to what they are, but here goes with my interpretation of instruction sheet types through the years. My first model was the Airfix Folland Gnat, bought for my 6th birthday by the older boy next door, who then took great delight in taking it back off me, building it and then handing me back the finished model (unpainted and with no decals applied!) but I loved it. The header card was never returned and I have been unable (so far) to get a replacement. I was hooked on models from then on and started buying my own (along with my bother whose model-making skills can only be described as abysmal!!). My early models included the Fairey Swordfish, Avro Anson, Armstrong Vickers Wellington and the Hawker P1127, the physical models of which have long since disappeared but for some strange reason, I carefully stored all the instructions in various empty Airfix model boxes. On cold winter evenings I would spent hours looking at these old instruction sheets, and with the aid of my copies of early Airfix catalogues, I would select, buy and then make models that I thought were interesting, if only to add to my instruction sheet collection.
