Drummoyne Rowing Club has been an integral part oF the Drummoyne community since 1919 when rowing was a was a hugely popular sport and tens oF thousands oF spectators gathered on the Iron Cove Foreshores to watch racing on the Bay. The then Mayor oF Drummoyne, AC Ingham, was instrumental in the club’s Formation and became DRC’s First President, the governor oF NSW, Sir Walter Davidson, a Former Cambridge oarsman, was its First Patron and Drummoyne won its First pennant as a club in 1922. While the Club has been through some turbulent periods economically the membership has adapted to changing circumstances and we are proud oF our history and the role we have played as a community-based club. The history oF the Club has been shaped by the vision oF its leaders, the work oF many unsung heroes and heroines and their love oF rowing. The licensed club that operated From 1968 until 2010 played a signiFicant role in the history oF the Club and allowed Drummoyne RC to help shape Australia’s rowing history through the appointment oF Russell “Rusty” Robertson in 1976 as the First proFessional coach in Australia. Many rowers who have competed at the national and international level have called Drummoyne “home” at some stage in their rowing lives. Today Drummoyne is again a strong community-based club with an active and growing junior development program that Feeds talented younger rowers into the elite clubs as well as providing opportunities For school rowers to progress into Open Club and Grade rowing. And we have a busy Learn To Row squad and an energetic group oF Masters Rowers which includes many Former and current national champions. So we are excited to host a day oF celebrations, with some Fantastic rowing, culminating in the Mixed 8 sprint which will provide a never-before-seen spectacle oF 15 8+’s racing head to head along the bay. Many thanks must go to Rowing NSW which has supported the club through its First century, to our amazing team oF volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth running Regatta, and to Captain Cook Cruises, Akubra and EFendy, Balmain, who have donated our major raFFle prizes. Good luck racing. After the Regatta we hope you will join us For a celebratory lunch on the pontoon, support our junior development and our chosen charity, the Smith Family Learning For LiFe, with the purchase oF some raFFle tickets, Purchase a limited edition Centenary T-Shirt and take a walk down memory lane with the manuscript For our Fabulous Centenary Book, which will be published in the coming months. We are looking forward to being a continued part oF the Drummoyne community, playing a signiFicant role in rowing as a sport and are conFident of a bright Future For Drummoyne Rowing Club in its new century. The Centenary Committee, DRC Rowers Inc. The celebrations don’t end today.
