4 Lesley University Commencement 2021 2021 Honorary Degree Recipient

Donald M. Perrin has been a dedicated member of the Lesley community for more than 20 years. As a member of the Board of Trustees for the Art Institute of Boston (AIB), he was instrumental in the Lesley merger with the and in the creation of Lesley University’s College of Art and Design.

Perrin was elected to Lesley’s Board of Trustees in 1999. He served as vice chair from 2004 to 2005 and chair from 2005 to 2009. In 2016, the board unanimously conferred the status of trustee emeritus to Perrin in honor of his long-standing commitment and distinctive service to the university.

Born in Boston and raised in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Perrin was founder and president of Crimson Tech, which became the predominant supplier and integrator of professional photographic and audiovisual products for governmental, medical, educational, and corporate organizations in New England. Perrin also founded Imageworks School of Photography, which trained several well-known fine art photographers during the 1970s.

Perrin serves on the Board of Trustees of Mass Eye and Ear, on the New England Israel Business Council, and as an honorary board member of the Palm Beach Fellowship for Christians and Jews. He is also an honorary trustee of Temple Israel Boston, a council co-chair at Newton Wellesley Hospital, and an advisor emeritus for the Museum of Science. Additionally, Perrin invests in a number of startup companies.

Perrin and his wife, Sandy, reside in Newton, Massachusetts, and have been married for over 60 years. Their son, Scott, received his graduate degree in education from Lesley in 2004 and is a special education teacher at Newton South High School.

Lesley University Commencement 2021 5 2021 Honorary Degree Recipients

Familiar names to many at Lesley, Peter and Paula Lunder are longtime champions of the university and beloved members of the community. Their belief in Lesley University made possible the Lunder Arts Center, which opened its doors in 2015. Melding Cambridge’s rich history with modern architecture, the striking building represented a new era for the College of Art and Design and has become a hub of art and culture in Porter Square, just as the couple—who are well-known New England philanthropists and prolific art collectors—envisioned that it would.

The Lunders also committed to support generations of Lesley students by funding an endowed scholarship for students matriculating from Maine, where the couple resided for many years. Beyond Lesley, the Lunders endowed the Lunder Conservation Center at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, which allows museum visitors to get a behind the scenes look at the institution’s preservation work. They support numerous educational and research institutes, including Colby College and the Colby College Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Art in Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

A Lesley alumna, Paula Lunder received a degree in education in 1959. She is a director of The Lunder Foundation, a family foundation established in 1988, and has volunteered for decades in educational, social service, religious, and arts organizations. At Colby College, Mrs. Lunder is a Lifetime Trustee and a member of the Colby College Museum of Art Board of Governors.

Peter Lunder is retired co-chairman, president and CEO of Dexter Shoe Company. He graduated from Colby College in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He is a Colby College lifetime overseer and member of the Colby College Museum of Art Board of Governors. He is a former vice chairman and national board member of the Smithsonian Institution and is commissioner emeritus of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He is the chairman of The Lunder Foundation and is a trustee of the Harold Alfond Foundation.

6 Lesley University Commencement 2021 2021 Honorary Degree Recipient & Guest Speaker

An advocate for diversity, representation, and transparency in museums, Dr. Elizabeth Broun has long been a leader in the arts world. She is the director emerita of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and its branch museum, the Renwick Gallery, which she led from 1989 through 2016. During her tenure, Dr. Broun collected landmark holdings by African American and Latinx artists and established the Lunder Conservation Center—the first art conservation facility that allows the public permanent behind-the-scenes views of essential preservation work.

She also advanced the museum’s leadership in distance learning and digital media, with a major national traveling exhibition program, a significant resident fellowship program, a leading journal of new scholarship, a collection of 42,000 artworks, and noteworthy research database resources, in addition to spearheading comprehensive renovations of the museum’s two National Historic Landmark buildings.

Broun is now the visual art advisor to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Henry Luce Foundation and the Irving Penn Foundation, as well as on the Board of the Olana Partnership, which supports Frederic Church’s historic Hudson River Valley site.

A longtime expert on the art of Albert Pinkham Ryder, she is co-curator and contributing author for an exhibition on Ryder at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, forthcoming in June 2021.

Broun is a graduate of the University of Kansas, with a B.A. in French and art history, an M.A. in medieval art history, and a doctorate in history of art. She lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

Lesley University Commencement 2021 7 2021 Honorary Degree Recipient & Guest Speaker

A featured TED speaker and host of the popular podcast The Happiness Lab, Yale University Professor Dr. Laurie Santos explores the evolutionary origins of the human mind by comparing the cognitive abilities of humans and non- human animals, including primates and canines.

Dr. Santos, a cognitive scientist and psychologist, has received a number of awards for her research and teaching, and was voted one of Popular Science magazine’s “Brilliant 10” young minds and a Time magazine “Leading Campus Celebrity.”

These accolades are due, in part, to the deeply relatable questions that Santos asks. Her course “Psychology and the Good Life” explores some of these human quandaries: “What actually makes us happy?” and “What can we do to achieve the good life?” The course is now the most popular in Yale’s history. Approximately one out of every four Yale undergraduates enrolls in the class along with 3.3 million people online through Coursera. Santos translated the course into her equally sought-after podcast, downloaded more than 35 million times since its launch in September 2019.

Santos has been featured in numerous news outlets including the New York Times, NBC Nightly News, the TODAY show, GQ magazine, Slate, and O! magazine.

In addition to teaching, she directs Yale’s Comparative Cognition Laboratory and Canine Cognition Lab. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and received both her M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard.

26 Lesley University Commencement 2021 Academic Regalia

The academic attire worn at Commencement has its origins in the Middle Ages. The purpose of academic regalia is to display the academic and scholarly achievements of the wearer. From the cap, gown, and hood it is possible to distinguish the institution from which the wearer graduated, the field of learning in which his or her degree was earned, and the level of degree.

Academic hoods are the visual representation of scholastic degrees. Hoods are lined with the official color of the college or university conferring the degree, and the velvet detail represents the learning discipline. All Lesley University hoods are green and gold and the following colors represent each discipline:

Arts: White

Education: Light Blue

Fine Arts: Brown

Science: Golden Yellow

The honorary hoods are white for Doctor of Humane Letters and brown for Doctor of Fine Arts.

The mortarboard hats and soft velvet tams are black. Prior to receiving the degree, the tassel is worn on the right. The graduates ceremonially turn the tassel to the left at the end of the Commencement ceremony.

Gowns are normally black, and the level of the degree is indicated by the cut of the gown. Colored doctoral gowns represent the school colors of the college or university that awarded the doctoral degree. The green gowns of the president, trustees, and honorary degree recipients represent the Lesley University colors. The president wears the Lesley University presidential medallion.

Cords worn by graduates of the College of Art and Design and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences indicate honors. Summa Cum Laude cords are gold, Magna Cum Laude cords are gold and white, and Cum Laude cords are white.

* Denotes degrees with a previous conferral date.

Unofficial List of Graduates: The names that appear in this printed program were complete and accurate as of April 22, 2021. The program does not reflect any changes to the list after that date.

Award of Honors: Because of publication deadlines, the honors listed in this program are based on students’ cumulative grade point averages of all completed coursework as of April 22, 2021, and may not include the names of those who earn honors once final grades are posted to students’ official academic records. Final determination of Latin Honors are certified by the Registrar’s Office as accurate and official, based on the students’ final cumulative grade point average and may differ from what is listed in this program.
