  • Press 3 February 2021 the 25 Defining Works of the Black
TIME The 25 Defining Works of the Black Renaissance 3 February 2021 The 25 Defining Works of the Black Renaissance “I’m rooting for everybody Black.” So said Issa Rae on the red carpet at the 2017 Emmy Awards, capturing the electricity of a moment when “everybody Black” referred to quite a large group of ascendant voices—not only those up for awards that night, and not only those in Hollywood, but artists across the cultural landscape. While there has never been a shortage of Black artists making great work, the past six or so years have seen these creators claiming the spotlight like never before. Image: O.J. Made in America: ESPN Films/Everett Collection; Slave Play: Sarah Krulwich—The New York Times/Redux; Black Panther: Marvel/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures/Everett Collection; Getty Images In fact, the hardest part of compiling this list of 25 works that have defined the current Black Renaissance was coming to terms with what had to be left out: vital films, series, albums, books, poetry collections, plays and works of fashion. For guidance, TIME assembled some of the era’s most influential figures—artists who have also become advocates, mentors and changemakers—to help curate the list. These luminaries across disciplines voted on hundreds of works to reach a compilation of original, ambitious art, from paintings that will live in perpetuity in the National Portrait Gallery to music that became the soundtrack to a movement; books about marriage and memory and TV series that are as weird as they are wise. The works of this new canon are defined by their breadth and diversity—a movement of pop stars and public intellectuals, superheroes and screwups, horror and ecstasy, individuality and unity.

CHOSEN FAMILIES AND FEMINIST MOTHERING IN THE BALLROOM COMMUNITY: BLANCA EVANGELISTA FROM POSE1 José Javier Torres Fernández2 Chosen Families and Feminist Mothering in the Ballroom Community: Blanca Evangelista from POSE. Abstract: The ballroom community and its subculture present the notion of chosen families as a group of, mainly, Black and Latinx LGBTQ people who gather in a socially configured structure called a house. Ballroom houses are families in which queer mothering is presented as feminist mothering embodied by Black and Latinx trans women in POSE (2018–present). Ruddick’s maternal thinking and O’Reilly’s feminist mothering weaken the normative patriarchal discourse of mothering and motherhood and convey new meanings to this practice. This article tackles these concepts as part of Blanca Evangelista’s identity as a woman and as a mother in POSE. Keywords: motherhood, ballroom, identity, family, community, gender studies, trans studies, performativity.

  • Ballroom Community As Resistance and Protest
PERFORMANCE IN POSE: BALLROOM COMMUNITY AS RESISTANCE AND PROTEST. JOSÉ JAVIER TORRES FERNÁNDEZ UNIVERSIDAD DE ALMERÍA Premiering in 2018 on FX, POSE (2018–present) is a worldwide acclaimed drama series created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Steven Canals comprised of two seasons. The series begins with the introduction of character Blanca Evangelista (M. J. Rodríguez), a member of the New York ballroom community. After being diagnosed as HIV-positive, Blanca decides to leave a prominent house in this subculture (the House of Abundance) to start her own: The House of Evangelista. She is joined by Damon (Ryan Jamaal Swain), a young boy who is kicked out of his parents’ home after coming out as gay. POSE follows the story of these two main characters in both the ballroom community and the outside world. Within the ballroom subculture, a safe space and an alternative world for LGBTQ people, these houses are like teams and also, as per the series, chosen families. There the participants organize balls, which Blanca herself defines as “a gathering of people who are not welcome to gather anywhere else, a celebration of a life that the rest of the world does not deem worthy of celebration” (POSE 2018, “Pilot”). These balls follow specific themes that dictate the dress codes and performance styles required of participants. Following Marlon M. Bailey’s work, although drag performances have been essential to ballroom subculture, new categories have emerged within this scene that include more expansive gender and sexuality diversity that better represents the community (2011, 375). Ballroom emerged as a countercultural practice that defied the gendering of clothes.
