The Bogeyman Show Notes Season 1, Episode 6 Welcome to episode six of the Time Pieces History Podcast. I can’t believe we’re halfway through the first season already! I decided we’d have some light relief today, and look at the legend of the bogeyman. This creature pops up around the world, not just in Britain, but he’s certainly significant. As part of my Time Pieces History Project I looked at some of my favourite books, so this episode is inspired by that, and in particular Raymond Briggs’ Fungus the Bogeyman, a family man who has questions about his life. If you haven’t read Fungus, I highly recommend getting yourself a copy. Briggs is probably more famous for his books The Snowman and Father Christmas, but I always preferred Fungus, perhaps because of Briggs’ lovingly-drawn illustrations of his underground world. It’s also full of puns and funny inventions, which made me laugh rereading it as an adult. Bogeymen like things damp and mouldy, and keep their clothes in a ‘waterobe.’ In private they’re polite and softly-spoken, and like to go to art galleries, where they get emotional over the paintings. Fungus’ day job though (or should that be night job?) is the more traditional bogeyman role, of scaring children, disturbing people’s sleep and turning milk sour. Over several pages, we see Fungus wondering if there should be more to his existence than traumatising humans, in scenes which are both hilarious and sad. Raymond Briggs put his own spin on the legend of the bogeyman, which is fine, because one good thing about them is that there’s no hard and fast rule on what one looks like, or what they do. -

Foreword erna brodber One afternoon when I was six and in standard 2, sitting quietly while the teacher, Mr. Grant, wrote our assignment on the blackboard, I heard a girl scream as if she were frightened. Mr. Grant must have heard it, too, for he turned as if to see whether that frightened scream had come from one of us, his charges. My classmates looked at me. Which wasn’t strange: I had a reputation for knowing the answer. They must have thought I would know about the scream. As it happened, all I could think about was how strange, just at the time when I needed it, the girl had screamed. I had been swimming through the clouds, unwillingly connected to a small party of adults who were purposefully going somewhere, a destination I sud- denly sensed meant danger for me. Naturally I didn’t want to go any further with them, but I didn’t know how to communicate this to adults and ones intent on doing me harm. -

Researchers have struggled to classify “pilgrims” and “tourists” because these groups overlap to a large extent in terms of their identities while participating in religious activities/sightseeing. To achieve sustainable tourism development for the region with rich religious and cultural characteristics, the present article outlines a process for analyzing the motivation of participants attending religious festival of Mazu in Taiwan and then classifies religious festival participants according to their motivations. Using cluster sampling, a total of 280 responses were obtained and analyzed. The results revealed four different motivation categories: Fun traveler, devout believer, cultural enthusiast, and religious pragmatist. The study concludes that while festivalgoers are influenced by secularization to some extent, the original doctrine of the religion epitomized in the festivals fundamentally retains the essence and spirit of its religious rituals. The findings may have a significant value for the development of religious tourism marketing as it offers a foundation for future research seeking to develop regional cultural and religious sightseeing attractions sustainably. With 3.87 million inhabitants settled in a land area of 68,890 km², for the part of Ireland which is now the Republic, it has the second smallest population among the European Union countries. Ireland has experienced an economic boom in the last 12 years, and has one of Europe’s highest economic growth rates – currently around 5 per cent, with annual inflation kept in check at 4 per cent, and a highly developed information technology sector. The country has attracted overseas investment over recent decades with an enticing package of tax incentives. Formerly targeted as an EU poverty region situated on the periphery of Europe, the country has benefited from an influx of European Structural Funds for regional development, which have also impacted on arts and culture. Up until 8 years ago unemployment remained stubbornly high at around 10 per cent and there were reports of a widening gap between levels of income. -

07-Meunier 5/26/05 3:39 PM Page 125 ANTI-AMERICANISMS IN FRANCE Sophie Meunier Princeton University France is undoubtedly the first response that comes to mind when asked which country in Europe is the most anti-American. Between taking the lead of the anti-globalization movement in the late 1990s and taking the lead of the anti-war in Iraq camp in 2003, France confirmed its image as the “oldest enemy” among America’s friends.1 Even before the days of De Gaulle and Chirac, it seems that France has always been at the forefront of anti-American animosity—whether through eighteenth-century theories about the degener- ation of species in the New World or through 1950s denunciations of the Coca-Colonization of the Old World.2 The American public certainly returns the favor, from pouring French wine onto the street to renaming fries and toast, and France has become the favorite bogeyman of conservative shows and provided material for countless late-night comedians’ jokes.3 Surprisingly, however, polling data reveals that France is not drastically more anti-American than other European countries—even less so on a variety of dimensions. The French do stand out in their criticism of US unilateral leadership in world affairs and in their willingness to build an independent Europe able to compete with the United States if needed.4 But their overall feelings towards the US were not dramatically different from those of other European countries in 2004.5 Neither was their assessment of the primary motives driving American foreign policy, and US Middle East policy in partic- ular.6 Furthermore, despite what seems like growing gaps in their societal val- ues (especially regarding religion), French and American public opinions agree on the big threats facing their societies, and they still share enough values to cooperate on international problems. -

Supernatural Beings in the Far North: Folklore, Folk Belief, and The Selkie NANCY CASSELL MCENTIRE Within the world of folklore, stories of people turning into animals are well known. Either by accident or by design, a person may become a malevolent wolf, a swan, a helpful bird, a magic seal, a dog, a cat. Sometimes these stories are presented as folktales, part of a fictitious, make-believe world. Other times they are presented as legends, grounded in a narrator’s credibility and connected to everyday life. They may be sung as ballads or their core truths may be implied in a familiar proverb. They also affect human behavior as folk belief. Occasionally, sympathetic magic is involved: the human imagination infers a permanent and contiguous relationship between items that once were either in contact or were parts of a whole that later became separated or transformed. A narrative found in Ireland, England, and North America depicts a man who spends a night in a haunted mill, where he struggles with a cat and cuts off the cat’s paw. In the morning, the wife of a local villager has lost her hand (Baughman: 99; Disenchantment / Motif no. D702.1.1). France, French-speaking Canada and French-speaking Louisiana have stories of the loup-garou, a shape- shifter who is a person trapped in the body of an animal. One might suspect that he or she has encountered a loup-garou if that the animal is unusually annoying, provoking anger and hostile action. One penetrating cut will break the spell that has kept it trapped in animal form. -

Nordic Influence on Saami Folk Belief: the "Buttercat" (Smørkatt) BY MAGDALENA TATAR The past few years have witnessed the publication of many works on Siberian-Arctic shamanism in both the original languages and in translation. This has made it necessary and possible to review our opinions of shaman- ist and/or Nordic elements in Saami folk beliefs and their relationship to Siberian-Arctic and Nordic cultures. But we must avoid any romanticism as Louise Bäckman has noted. Ås a striking example in this regard I can cite a recently published article on Nordic influences in Saami religion, in which the caption under a picture of a wooden sculpture read: Saami idol from Ostyak region (Johansen 1982, 129). This was done without any mention of the comprehensive historical-ethnogenetic literary figures of human beings originating from east and west of the Urals and without any explanation of how the Saami people reached the Ostyak region. We must note, however, that some ideas may be typical and genuine both in Siberia and in Europe; cf. e.g. Ränk's book on the Ruto (Ränk 1981). What I intend to speak about here is a Saami superstitious belief, namely the smørkatt "buttercat", which is without doubt a Nordic loan in Saami tradition. J. Wall's recent book gives a detailed description of the woman who steals milk according to Nordic and western European tradition. Concern- ing Saami traditions, he cites (Wall 1977-78, 2, 61f.) Læstadius' material from Karesuando, Fjellman's material from Utsjoki (Enare) and others from Troms and Finnmark in Northern Norway.
