The Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium, Saint Paul RiverCentre, and the adjacent Xcel Energy Center are known for being passionate about creating the best experiences imaginable for their guests, and that includes providing a setting that is a model of sustainable practices. 2 About the Hosts MINNESOTA rOlleRGIRlS Founded by the Donnelly sisters in August 2004, the Minnesota RollerGirls are one of the first modern roller derby leagues to host a public bout. After our first season in a roller rink in the northern suburbs, we moved on up to the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium in the capital city of the great state of Minnesota. We are proud to be a founding member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). We have four home teams: the Atomic Bombshells, Dagger Dolls, Garda Belts, and Rockits, that do battle every season to win the coveted Golden Skate trophy (and bragging rights, natch). Beyond our four fantastic home teams, the Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars are one of the top teams in the world, competing in the WFTDA Championship tournaments in 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014. In addition to the skaters, a tip-top officiating crew and dedicated volunteers make up our 150-member league. The Minnesota RollerGirls are dedicated to our local community. We invest our time, effort, and a portion of our event proceeds in local charities. 3 How To Get Here ANDo TrANSP rTaTION ArOUND TOWN BY AIR: BY BUS: Centrally located in North America, Saint Paul is the Greyhound Lines, Inc. is the largest provider of intercity international gateway for air transportation in the Upper bus transportation, serving more than 3,800 destinations Midwest. May 2016 This project has been financed in part with funds provided by the State of Minnesota from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Minnesota Historical Society. Saint Paul African American Historic and Cultural Context ABSTRACT Saint Paul’s African American community is long established—rooted, yet dynamic. From their beginnings, Blacks in Minnesota have had tremendous impact on the state’s economy, culture, and political development. Although there has been an African American presence in Saint Paul for more than 150 years, adequate research has not been completed to account for and protect sites with significance to the community. One of the objectives outlined in the City of Saint Paul’s 2009 Historic Preservation Plan is the development of historic contexts “for the most threatened resource types and areas,” including immigrant and ethnic communities (City of Saint Paul 2009:12). The primary objective for development of this Saint Paul African American Historic and Cultural Context Project (Context Study) was to lay a solid foundation for identification of key sites of historic significance and advancing preservation of these sites and the community’s stories.

Alexandria – “The Birthplace of America” City of Alexandria Historic Context Study “We live not alone in the present, but also in the past and future. We can never look out thoughtfully at our own immediate surroundings but a course of reasoning will start up, leading us to inquire into the causes that produced the development around us, and at the same time we are led to conjecture the results to follow causes now in operation. We are thus linked indissolubly with the past and the future. If, then, the past is not simply a stepping-stone to the future, but a part of our very selves, we cannot afford to ignore, or separate it from ourselves as a member might be lopped off from our bodies; for though the body thus maimed, might perform many and perhaps most of its functions, still it could never again be called complete.” - Charles S.
