Se exponen dos casos acontecidos a principios del siglo XX. El primero describe el desdoblamiento de la personalidad que el médico Víctor Melcior atribuyó a la médium Teresa Esquius. El segundo trata la polémica, entre el astrónomo Josep Comas y el espiriista Jacint Fornaguera, respecto al desdoblamiento corporal en la médium Carmen Domínguez. DOUBLES OR SPIRITS? DISSOCIATION THEORIES AGAINST SPIRITISM IN SPAIN AT THE BEGINNINGS OF THE 20TH CENTURY ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the relaion between dissociaion theories and spiriism in Spain. It shows two cases that took place at the beginnings of the 20th Century. The irst describes the mental dissociaion that the physician Víctor Melcior atributed to the medium Teresa Esquius. The second shows the polemic, between the astronomer Josep Comas and the spiriist Jacint Fornaguera, in regard to the bodily dissociaion in the medium Carmen Domínguez. Introduction Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation (first published in 1966) is a classic of 20th-century parapsychology that can still be read with profit.' Along with Children Who Remember Previous Lives (2001),^ it is an ideal introduction to Stevenson. The latter work, intended for the educated general reader, provides an overview of 40 years of research and includes capsule summaries of several cases, but Twenty Cases contains detailed reports that illustrate reincamation- type cases much more fully. The cases reported in Twenty Cases come from India, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Lebanon, Brazil, and the United States (the Tlingit Indians of Alaska). They were selected from about 200 personally investigated by Stevenson in order to show the variety of features this type of case presents. The subjects of all were young children at the time they claimed to have lived before. Collectively these twenty cases help define "cases ofthe reincamation type," as Stevenson came to call them, though they vary substantially in detail. The book includes both evidentially strong and weak cases, cases among strangers and in the same family, cases with strong behavioral features, cases with birthmarks and congenital deformities related to the previous person,' a case with a change of sex between the previous person and the subject, and a case in which the previous person died after the birth of the subject.

Alvarado University of Virginia Historical discussions of animal magnetism as a concept of force generally emphasise publications appearing before the mid-nineteenth century. This article focuses on selected aspects of a later neo-magnetism that flourished between the late nineteenth and the first two decades of the twentieth century, namely the work of Alexandre Baréty, Émile Boirac, and Julian Ochorowicz. They used the concept of magnetism to explain the induction of trance and anaesthesia, as well as mental suggestion. Outside of the neo- magnetic movement, contemporary comments of the work of these men were generally negative. Regardless of this, and of current scepticism on the subject, this work should be recognised as part of the context in which the field of hypnosis developed. General histories of the investigations and ideas of hypnotic phenomena always mention the concept of animal magnetism as a factor in the development of hypnosis (e.g., Gauld, 1992; Pintar & Lynn, 2008). Because the concept was important, we need to be aware that certain aspects of its history are sometimes neglected. In this article, I will focus on selected examples of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century magnetism. ALVARADO Parapsychology Foundation, New York, NY, USA [email protected] Submitted December 2, 2015; Accepted January 19, 2016; Published March 15, 2016 Abstract—In Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries’ psychical research literature, there were many speculations to explain physical mediumship consisting of the projection of nervous and vital forces from the body. The purpose of this paper is to present an example of these ideas and a trans- lation of part of an article published by Albert de Rochas in 1897 in the Annales des Sciences Psychiques. The article was devoted to séances with Eusapia Palladino, and de Rochas suggested the projection of forces to ex- plain telekinesis and materializations, a concept also involving the idea of a fl uidic double. The ideas are presented in the context of previous specula- tions, and of the life and work of its author. The point of this article is not to defend or criticize the validity of the concept, but to contribute to the history of these ideas by rescuing de Rochas from oblivion, which in turn also shows French contributions to Nineteenth-Century psychical research.     Fae Brauer Magnetic Modernism František Kupka’s Mesmeric Abstraction and Anarcho-Cosmic Utopia Introduced to Spiritualism around the age of fourteen when apprenticed as a master saddler in Eastern Bohemia, František Kupka was also inducted into animal magnetism while working as a “successful medium” in both Prague and Vienna in Spiritualist séances.¹ So successful was Kupka that he was able to earn his living as a medium sufficiently to pay for his art classes at both the Prague and Viennese Academies and to support his study of alchemy, astrology and Theo- sophy.² Adept at going into trances, Kupka was able to perform as a conduit of “psychic energy” purportedly passing between the world of living humans and those of the dead or of spirits. He also seems to have been aware of the ways in which animal magnetism could be used to heal the body, particularly through the attachment of magnets to it and the stretching out of hands above the body to direct magnetic fluid in “passes” in order for “emanation” − a term often used by Kupka − to be discharged. While his experiences as a medium were intensified by Kupka’s exposure to Buddhists, Spiritualists and Theosophists in Vienna and Paris, his knowledge of magnetism was able to grow in new dimensions when he came into contact with the intensive investigations of its power over the body and unconscious mind conducted by neurologists, scientists and parapsychologists in Paris at the fin-de-siècle. By the time that Kupka arrived in Paris, far from animal magnetism having long abated, as is so often assumed, the opposite had ensued.
