INAUGURATION OF WIWIED FARMA and Wadah Community Activity Center CIBODAS, LEMBANG

On February 25, 2014, Ibu Anie Hashim Djojohadikusomo, founder and patron of Wadah Foundation, inaugurated Apotek Wiwied Farma, an expansion of Ibu Wiwied’s midwifery clinic in Cibodas Village, Lembang, West Java. At the same occasion, Ibu Anie launched the Cibodas Wadah Community Center or Pusat Kegiatan Masyarakat (PKM) WADAH Cibodas, providing maternal health services, general medical and welfare needs of Cibodas and surrounding villages.

The Wadah Foundation has been actively supporting Wiwied and her midwifery practice for some years now, so the evolution from partner to PKM Wadah-Cibodas, a fully-assisted community, was a natural progression.

Joining Ibu Wiwied in the operations is her husband, Pak Edy Bowoh, formerly with SOS (Kinderdorf) Desa Taruna In- donesia. In addition to running the clinic and the drugstore, the couple oversees the programs of the center, which offers instruction for children of pre-school age (PAUD), class tutorials and performing arts classes for those of primary school age. Feature | August 2014 | 5

The inauguration ceremony, attended by community leaders, village officials and the many residents who benefit from the various services of PKM WADAH Cibodas, was enlivened by festive renditions of rampak gendang (per- cussion music) and jaipong (folk dance) performed Ibu Wiwied delivering her welcome speech joyously by the neighborhood children.

The Cibodas Wadah Community Center is the first to bear the brand Pusat Kegiatan Masyarakat (PKM) WADAH. This year, Wadah Foundation intends to increase and intensify its community development programs--a first step is having a unified identity for all assisted communities, PKM WADAH (Pusat Kegiatan Masyarakat WADAH or Wadah Community Center).

Standing: Mrs. Anuradha Koirala, Seated L-R: Ibu Anie, Karina de Vega, Babli Kalha e Can! WADAH Bridges by Babli Kalha India and Nepal

It all started during WGG 2012 in Bali during STOMP FOR CHANGE. What I learned during the meeting really shook me and opened my eyes particularly after listening to eminent speakers on the subject. Human trafficking is the No. 2 crime in the world and a US $12b industry. Nearly thirty thousand die each year from abuse, disease, torture and neglect while being trafficked. And 80% are under the age of 24, some even as young as six years old. Most of the trafficking done these days is trans-national in character; largely because of the huge profits involved. It is estimated that after arms transfers and drugs smuggling, trafficking in human beings is the next most lucrative trade.

It was in the same gathering that our new found family member in Wadah Foundation, Anuradha Koirala the founder and Chairper- son of Maiti Nepal spoke and gave us a broader insight in to this crime. To my horror she told the gathering that most of the traf- ficked girls from Nepal are brought to India. This really had a great numbing effect on the audience and on myself. I was thereafter determined to do something to salvage the situation no matter whatever little we could do. In 2012 when Maiti Nepal invited the Wadah Foundation founder and Patron, Anie Hashim and her group of friends, I too was invited to attend. At the meeting Anu- radha Koirala invited me to take a leading role in the working of Maiti India.

In the months following this, Wadah Foundation, Maiti Nepal and Maiti India decided to hold a meeting in Delhi for which the ini- tiative would have to be taken by me. The main consideration was to bring about an awareness about human trafficking and what steps to take to prevent it; particularly amongst some opinion- makers in India. About 100 people participated in the meeting, 14 | August 2014 | Feature

during which a group of solar engineers from Indonesia also participated and gave a lively rendering of songs. The main speaker was Anuradha Koirala who gave a graphic account of trafficking in women and gave facts and figures to sub- stantiate her speech. What surprised the audience was that girls as young as 6 years old were given steroids and pushed into prostitution. For most, the picture presented shocked their conscience. The next speaker was Karina de Vega who gave her own personal experience as one who had been trafficked and who showed how it was possible to change from such trauma into leading a life of hope. The function ended with networking amongst guests and with Wadah Titian Harapan Foundation, Maiti Nepal, Maiti India and other NGOs present there.

I can say with confidence that almost all the guests left more energized and more determined to help eliminate the scourge of trafficking in whatever little way they could. Finally, I would like to thank my friend Anie Hashim and Wadah Foundation; without whose help and unstinting support this function would not have been possible.

On May 3, 2014, the sun shone brightly as cheerful and vibrant children of Kampung Beting Remaja formed a colorful line along the alley headed towards the Wadah Community Activity Center or Pusat Kegiatan Masyarakat Wadah (PKM WADAH).

Happiness and excitement radiated from the smiles of young and old residents alike. As soon as Wadah Patron, Ibu Anie Djojohadikusumo, arrived with donors Mr. and Mrs. Al and Margaret Njoo and their son, Daniel, the children performed the martial arts Pencak Silat, a traditional Betawi way of welcoming guests. They were then squired by the youths down the alley and into the new building, greeting every- one along the way. Upon reaching the center, Ibu Anie and Mrs. Margaret together cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Living Extraordinary Meeting the leaders of the Wadah supported communities is astonishing. These young men and women are truly “Wadah Warriors”. They define the word “fearless.” They contend with parents, classrooms filled with children, Lives community leaders, politicians, and gangsters. Their stories of triumph and their humility are inspiring. I was continually impressed with the outpouring of pride and love they demonstrate for their communities. I was overwhelmed with the courage they possess. Most of the teachers and tutors in the communities are in their early teens or twenties and many of them attended the schools where they now teach.

As a mother of three grown children, I am always telling my children, “Go have an adventure while you’re young.” Well, I am not exactly young, but I recently decided to take my own advice. My desire to visit Indonesia began when I viewed a friend’s pictures of her visit. I immediately fell in love with the smiles on the children’s faces and knew in my heart, this was a country I had to visit. My contact with the Wadah foundation began with a flurry of emails between Alfredo Torno, Secretary General of the Wadah Foundation and myself. His words of encouragement and kindness made me eager to begin my journey. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I started a fundraising event on the internet, through a site called “Go Fund It.” I also reached out to my coffee group and neighbors to ask for their support in gathering things for the children and schools I would soon be visiting. The out- pouring of support was astonishing. This led to my first big obstacle, the dreaded packing of the suitcases. I now had to discover how to jam 70 lbs of material into the 50 lbs allotted each suitcase. There was so much I wanted to share with these children: bingo, cards games, jump rope, wiffle ball, puzzles, books, and music. So many things, so little room. 24 | August 2014 | Volunteers

One of the first people I met from Wadah was Alodie Faye Torno. She is Wadah’s International Volunteers Coordinator and she would soon become my traveling companion and as we say in America, my “partner in crime”. She guided me through my first days, never cringing when I would ask her to pronounce something in Bahasa for the third or fourth time. Just when I was gaining my confidence in the language, saying thank you - “terima kasih” someone would say, “Oh, that’s not how we say that in our part of the country.” But the language of love surpasses all barriers and a smile goes a long way when trying to communicate. And let me tell you, the Indonesian peoples’ smiles are beautiful!

I lost my heart in Indonesia. I had no idea one could fall in love in just a day. But that is exactly what I did. I fell in love with the village of Arjasari. Ophan, Dania and Ami are three of the young adults who dedicate their time to schools in this village. Ophan initiated the knapsack program that reaches out to children in the village and teaches them. Because of this love and dedication, the children and the tutors in Arjarsari are so eager to learn and teach English. But, it isn’t as simple as just this. These Wadah volunteers spend time learning the stories of their students and their families. They counsel and intercede on their behalf. Ophan and his band of merry men and women do an incredible job with the students. I don’t think I have ever seen a group that spends more time just enjoying being together, smiling, talking and laughing. I was so astonished to learn that the villagers of Arjasari spent three days installing an American style toilet for my visit. Wow!

I’ve learned what an amazing organization Wadah is. Unlike many organizations that go into a community without first understanding it, Wadah seeks to partner with people living in a community that are striving to find a better life for themselves and their neighbors. One such program, initiated by Ibu Anie and Wadah is the milk program. Every student in the supported classroom receives a carton of milk. This serves as a visual sign of Wadah’s commitment to these communities and to the nutritional needs of these children. At the Arjasari Community I believe success is defined as finding that one true thing that fills your heart. The leaders and workers of Wadah understand this. They “get it.” They have found that one, true thing in the service of their neighbors. In the short time I have been privileged to be associated with Wadah, I have seen many instances of true joy. I find this in the willingness of these workers to open their homes and hearts to strangers. Not just to the foreigner like myself, but especially to the lost, the lonely and the forsaken. True heroes are the workers, leaders, teachers of Wadah. They exemplify what it means to be fearless. So let’s be like them: Let’s live an extraordinary life. With PKM Wadah Arjasari volunteers

INAUGURATION OF KLINIK BUNGA ARSARI

linik Bidan Yuni, now called Klinik Bunga Arsari is a small and modest community health center located in Dusun Sungapan, Argodadi, Sedayu District, Ban- Ktul, Yogyakarta. Operated by midwife Tri Wahyuni or Bidan Yuni, located in a modest village church, it is the only facility serving mothers and children.

Dusun Sungapan in Sedayu District is one of the poorest vil- lages in Yogyakarta. Those who need medical attention and treatment have to travel about 15 kilometers to the nearest public health center. It is not easy for them, especially wom- en and children, to visit the center because they are mostly indigent rice farmers. The Need for a Clinic

In late 2012, Ibu Anie met with her. It was then envisaged that the clinic would provide health services to the people of Sedayu and its surrounding communities, especially mothers and chil- dren.

It was found out, however, that the government requires 700 sq.m. of land in order to approve the construction of a clinic. In order to meet the said requirement, Wadah Foun- dation bought the 200 sq.meters of land annexed to the 500 sq. meters already owned by Bidan Yuni.

On April 18, 2013, the ground-breaking ceremony of the clinic was held with Ibu Anie and her team at the event. The clinic was then named “Klinik Bunga Arsari.” This ceremony
