It is a source of pride and a standard by which we measure ourselves. To meet our operational mission requirements in the past decade, we have taken necessary risks in our tradi- tional education and training programs. But our status as a professional NCO Corps requires that we now priori- tize these programs — the NCO Education System and other professional development and training programs — to provide young NCOs with the necessary context for their combat experience. Beyond that, a renewed focus on competency further instills within us a clearer under- standing of what it means to be a professional NCO.
