Russell Kapryn Professor Kirsch, Professor Ramirez 19 July 2017, Slovenia Travelogue I will begin by stating that I am quite grateful and thankful for the Presidential Award for study abroad. This award was graciously started and championed by California State University, San Bernardino President Tomás Morales for all students who wish to participate in study abroad programs. Considering that this is 13th country I have been to in Europe, what I have gained in perspective from studying abroad in Slovenia is that Europe is culturally and geographically very diverse and that Slovenia certainly exemplifies this belief. Let us see why. When I arrived in Slovenia by bus from Vienna, I immediately noticed the immense natural beauty that this country has to offer. Trees, greenery, hills and mountains can be seen all around. Upon arriving in Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia I could not help but observe just how peaceful and relaxing the city centre is. Unlike most cities I have been to in the past, people are not scrambling around to get from Point A to Point B. Ljubljana is a city that you can take a leisurely stroll through where you can enjoy the city´s many shops and attractions. One such attraction of great historical interest that I have been to is Ljubljana Castle. This structure, which is perched high on a hill top and originally began as a fortress, was initially built in the 11th century. To get to it, one must either climb through trees to get to the top or take a tram. Upon entering the castle grounds, one gets a strong sense of the great history of the region. This is exemplified by the architecture of the castle grounds and the many great artifacts that can be seen. The highlight of the visit to the castle came when I went up the tower. Upon reaching the top of the tower, one has a beautiful, full 360° view of Ljubljana. Other highlights or jewels of Slovenia that have been seen include seeing Lake Bled, the Postojna Cave system and Predjama Castle. Lake Bled reminds me of Lake Tahoe in California. While it is smaller, it is way less crowded and has the beautiful Bled Castle built off of the lake along with the well-known ˝Church on the Island˝. The Postojna Cave system, which is the top highlight of Slovenia for me and is a Unesco World Heritage site, has gorgeous subterranean canyons that are strongly reminiscent of Lord of the Rings. Finally, Predjama Castle, which was built more than 800 years ago, is a sight to behold as it was built at the entrance of an extensive cave complex. Below are pictures of these beautiful jewels of Slovenia. Ljubljana Castle View of ˝Church on the Island˝ from Bled Castle Postojna Cave Entrance Predjama Castle .
